Crocodile bikes and peeps
- Eye of the Fish
- If you haven’t seen Stephen Colbert’s trip to NZ yet, then click here and watch it – its great! And spends time in my favourite local bar – without giving away where it is! Excellent! But there is also a wonderful sequence where they pass a woman, keen on walking, while Stephen and a couple of locals are out on a crocodile bike.

Bikes free on trains from July 1
- The Wellingtonista
- In an effort to encourage people to leave their cars at home, Greater Wellington has announced that from July 1 this year, bikes can ride on trains for free. At the moment, travelling by rail with your bike will cost you another adult fare. Sounds like a good idea to us.

Frocks on Bikes: Be seen in style!
- Cycling in Wellington
- Dear Frockstars As the Welly weather gets (gradually) better we’re more keen to get out and about on two wheels, rocking our styley scarves, coats, boots and gloves. Alas, it’s still dark enough in the mornings and evenings that we’re pretty damn hard to see on the roads – and Wellington’s drivers drive as if we’re not there even in broad daylight! But high-visibility gear? [eye roll] Do we have to?! Lucky for you, Frocks has the answer: Be Seen In Style!

Bikes on Buses – you can do it now*
- Cycling in Wellington
- *If you’ve got a folding bike! Back in 2010 I was lucky enough to spend some time in Vancouver, where all buses are equipped with bike racks, and it’s very easy to combine cycling with public transport. I blogged about this at the time, looking forward to some day being able to do the same thing in Wellington. GWRC and Go Wellington are slowly working towards putting bike racks on buses.

Bikes and buses – big problem with fast-tracked $11m plan for Victoria Street
- Wellington Scoop
- Expensive new plans for Victoria Street have failed to consider cyclists. Why do the concept plans show that the street will be rubbish for people on bikes? The City Council has committed $11million to fast track a re-design of three blocks of the street, between Dixon and Abel Smith Streets.

Bikes on Buses in the draft GWRC Long Term Plan
- Cycling in Wellington
- Greater Wellington Regional Council has included the implementation of bike racks on buses in its draft Long Term Plan, to be investigated and implemented where practical starting in 2017. It has been included in the ‘out years’ of the plan in order that high priority (and costly) upgrades to the rail commuter network may be completed in the short term. It is hoped that the provision of bike racks on buses will encourage cycle commuting by providing a safe, fall-back option for cyclists who are caught out by bad weather, failing light or mechanical problems.

It doesn’t want to pay for our cycleway, but it does want us to ride our bikes
- Wellington Scoop
- Is this hypocrisy? The NZ Transport Agency refuses to provide money to build a cycleway on the edge of the harbour from Petone to Wellington. But the Agency says that more of us should be riding our bikes and leaving our cars at home.

EkeRua ReBicycle
- Every month, we receive dozens of bikes donated by generous Wellingtonians. Our volunteer mechanics fix them up and we carefully match them to people who have requested a bike. We re-home roughly 75% of donated bikes – some are scrapped for parts and a few are sold to help fund our workshop.

Get Lost Cycling
- Get Lost Cycling was born out of a passion for bicycles. From the beginning, our vision was to create a workshop-centric store that would evolve into the local hub for cyclists that it is today. We love riding bikes, fixing bikes and chatting bikes. Collectively we have a broad range of experience in the cycling industry and between us there isn’t a type of bike that we haven’t worked on. After working in some of the most established and well-respected shops in Wellington, and beyond, we decided to start our own.

The Parade | Projects - WCC Transport Projects
- The proposal – to make The Parade safer for everyone The proposed changes will make The Parade safer and more accessible for everyone, particularly in the narrowest areas. The changes will provide greater separation between bikes and cars, with a continuous protected route for people on bikes and scooters between Dee and Reef streets, and encourage more people to choose low-carbon ways of getting around. Greater visibility at intersections and driveways, slightly wider traffic lanes and a consistent street layout will make it easier for drivers to negotiate The Parade, and improve the look and feel of the street. There will be two new dual crossings at footpath level for pedestrians and people on bikes, and a new layout through the 30km/h zone will add separated bike lanes, provide more footpath space in some places and reduce vehicle speeds.
