    • Important Dates 24 June : Learning Profiles published to portal 29 June : Wig Wednesday 4 July : Parent Teacher interviews (Year 11,12 & 13 only) 6 July : Music Evening 8 July : Last day of Term 2 25 July : First day of Term 1 1 August : Parent Teacher interviews (Year 9 & 10 only) Congratulations Underwater Hockey Regional Tournament Last weekend we had three Wellington High School teams compete in the Wellington Regional Underwater Hockey tournament.  The teams performed superbly all weekend and never gave up.   Our Junior Boys finished the tournament in 10th place and had their first win of the season.  The Junior Girls finished in 7th place and the Senior Girls finished in 5th place.   Senior Girls qualified for Nationals, to be held in Wellington from 1-4 September.  Well done to all teams and coaches you did the school proud.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 26/02/2020 - 11:30 - 15:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 A yacht that started it's journey from Tauranga, destined for Marlborough Sounds, left Whanganui yesterday afternoon and then ran into mechanical difficulty 21 NM off shore from Foxton Beach. Coastguard Manawatu went out and towed him towards Kapiti Island, where Coastguard Kapiti took over the tow. Coastguard Mana then went out and took over the tow from from south of Kapiti Island and brought him into Mana Marina where he will be able to arrange repair.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 26/08/2020 - 18:15 - 22:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  6 Total Volunteer Hours:  22 Reports of waka capsized 800m off shore from Shell (near Goat Pt) and 6 people in the water. 2 other waka in the vicinity trying to assist. Police activated us and we launched MR2. Nothing found on location. 2 surf boats training in the area reported seeing waka heading back up the channel to Onepoto harbour. Called Police to report this and they confirmed that they were safe and well and had just sent a stand-down. Returned to base.     • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 26/12/2020 - 09:10 - 16:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  75 A 15m yacht broke its rudder approximately 2NM west of Mana Island whilst crossing to the South Island. MR1 was tasked by Police to tow them home. By the time we got to them the wind had got up to 25-35kts and they had drifted 7NM west of Mana Island. We towed them back in challenging conditions and put them at anchor just outside the Mana bar, as they were unable to cross it at low tide.     • Zephyr Rovers Chairmen George Nash said it was a sad day for the club after Rovers failed to make the top eight after a 9 - 4 loss to Mercer was followed by a win to Whites. "We looked safe with two weeks to go but we lost three on the trot so we have no excuses". Nash said the club would not be making any rash decisions with regard to the future of Manager Steve Hall. "We don't want to be hasty over our next move" said Nash "so we'll probably sack him tomorrow when we've had a chance to sleep on it".

    • Metlink is looking to resume its full week-day rail timetable on Thursday 4 May following KiwiRail’s commitment to finish track inspections on Wednesday after a fix was found for its specialist equipment at the 11th hour. Metlink General Manager Samantha Gain welcomed KiwiRail’s commitment but warned that passengers were not out of the woods yet. “We have still got Tuesday and Wednesday’s reduced services to get through. We have been working with Transdev to monitor the performance of the network today (Monday 1 May) and we are adding two extra services over the remaining two days as a result.

If you’re reading this article, you’re probably a student, and the chances are you’re all too familiar with this ritual. Equally familiar is the pre-shift briefing. Depending on the temperament of your manager, this could sound like anything from group therapy to a fiery military pep talk. Tonight, though, I’ve been invited to sit in on one such briefing for the non-profit restaurant Everybody Eats.

• • Janice Campbell QSO

    • We would like to acknowledge the recent passing of Janice Campbell. A previous and long serving Principal of Wellington East Girls’, Janice was born in 1941, lived in Island Bay and was a student at East from 1954 to 1958. After completing her Master of Arts degree at Victoria University she returned to Wellington East as a teacher in 1963, becoming Head of English in 1975. Janice went on to become Deputy Principal in 1979, and Principal in 1981. In 1999 Janice was awarded the Queen's Service Order for Services to Education. Janice finally retired after 26 years as Principal in 2007 being recognised as Wellingtonian of the Year for Education and ending a lifetime of service to the College. She can still be seen maintaining a watchful eye over the school from her portrait hanging in the vestibule.
