    • Operation Details Date/Time:  Mon, 27/08/2012 - 10:45 - 11:45 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  0 Total Volunteer Hours:  3 Reports of  a kayak overturned in Porirua Harbour with two people in the water.  CRV Pelorus was launched and searched along with the Police vessel Alpha and helicopters.  No people or kayak were located - only sightings were of driftwood debris and marker buoys.  Search terminated by Police.     • This exhibition focuses on how the memories of New Zealand still live on in Flanders today, 90 years after the devastating conflict that cost so many young kiwi lives. These memories are brought to life through images, movies and artefacts. New Zealand lost more men during the 100 days of fighting than any other commonwealth country - 845 on one day alone during the First Battle of Passchendaele, 12 October, 1917. The people of Flanders and, more widely, the people of Belgium have never forgotten this sacrifice, which is commemorated in this very special exhibition. Passchendaele: The Belgians Have Not Forgotten will tour New Zealand between March and November 2009.     • One week of the eight-week consultation period is already over – leaving less than seven weeks to tell the Transport Agency what we think of their flyovers and their other roading plans. The best suggestion so far has come from Maximus on Eye of the Fish, who recommends that everyone sends a submission saying: I vote for neither of the two options presented. I demand to see a full and fair evaluation of all the other schemes that you have had for the last 2-3 years.

I hope everyone managed to enjoy their holidays and have begun the term feeling refreshed and ready for a HUGE term of learning. We are excited about this term. Our student achievement data from terms 1 and 2 is looking pretty good. However, as a staff, we met yesterday to discuss how we can continue to improve the achievement of our students over the next two terms.

    • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > The City Nature Challenge Guided Walk - The 3 Southern Reserves.Sunday April 30th, 10.30am - 12.30pmBring sturdy shoes, water and a picnic lunch.The City Nature Challenge is a great chance to help people connect with their backyards, natural environments, parks and reserves. As part of this city-wide event we are hosting a 2-hour walk through 3 of our southern restoration reserves. If you would like to make wildlife observations as part of the City Nature Challenge, please bring your smart phone to take photos. You can sign up on the iNaturalist website and use the iNaturalist app to record any wildlife observations, this is of course optional otherwise you can just enjoy the walk and meet some great people! <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > The City Nature Challenge Guided WalkThe 3 Southern Reserves - The Walk Rundown Sunday April 30th, 10.30am The meeting point for the walk is at 10.30am at 46a Derwent street in Island Bay at the entrance of Paekawakawa Reserve. Please be on time so we can set off as a group.The walk will begin at the entrance of Paekawakawa reserve on Derwent Street and head up the valley passing by streams, and through restored native bush in the Paekawakawa reserve.  You will be treated to unique vantages of Tapu te Ranga Island and Raukawa Moana (the Cook Strait).We will then enter the oldest restoration project in Pōneke, Manawa Karioi on Tapu te Ranga Marae land and hike along part of the loop track called Te Ahi Kā with amazing views over Island Bay Valley and back to the city.We will depart Manawa Karioi on the ridge line and enter into Tawatawa reserve, we will past the reservoir on the City to Sea track stopping for a break at the Lizard Garden with views over Hawkins Hill and the Dog Park.We will then head back down the hill and there is a picnic spot at the starting point for those who would like to have a picnic lunch.We are looking forward to meeting you all and sharing our enthusiasm for our Southern reserves. We will have a few spots where we stop to tell you about the 3 reserves.     • In the line of an old Abba song, The Winner takes it All, and so it was in the 2008 Wellington Civic Trust awards last night. A friendly Fish-monger sends in this report from the ceremony in Te Papa: The evening started off promptly, no time for drinkies (or Studio Pacific - who missed out on the news they had won the first prize of the evening by a good 5 minutes!), before leaping straight into the Awards ceremonies. First up was the award for best building in Wellington (constructed in the last 3 years).

• • Police search for missing tramper in Lower Hutt

    • Members of Wellington Search and Rescue spent several hours last night searching for a man who failed to return from a walk in the Rimutaka Forest Park on Friday afternoon. A Team consisting of 2 LandSAR volunteers and 3 Police SAR members including a Police dog handler located the male just after 5am this morning next to the Orongorongo River, several kilometers from his home. He was cold and hungry, but otherwise in good health. He had not allowed sufficient time to return home in daylight, so eventually had to stay put.
