Harrison Tew® will run specialised training with senior management, our staff and students in the lead up to a lock down exercise, which will occur on Monday 9 April.  The exercise will be as real-life as possible, which will mean that parents/families will receive notification by way of text, WHS app and/or email.  The information passed will emphasise that this is an exercise/practice and will explain that all updated information will then be posted on the school website. In a genuine incident, should you hear of a lock down at the school, can we please ask that you do not attend the school or phone, as we will not be able to respond.  Your presence at, or contact with the school may make it more difficult for us to manage the situation, and could potentially & place your children and in fact yourselves at risk.  What you need to do now Prior to this exercise, please check that your contact details (mobile phone numbers and email & addresses) are current. This will be the information we use to reach you should an emergency occur at the school. You can do this by checking your details through the parent portal [portal.whs.school.nz] and choosing ‘Details’. Download the WHS App today via Google Play store (Android) or iTunes app store (Apple) Reminders: Earthquake / school closure  This is a good time to encourage you to make or review your family plan around other emergencies, such as earthquakes.  You may find ‘How to get ready’ is a helpful resource. A family plan is particularly important for students who travel to school from out of zone as their transport routes may be cut off.  If a decision is made to close school, for any reason, we will keep our year 9 and 10 students with us until a known adult can come and collect them from the school field.   The only adults permitted to collect a student will be the caregivers and emergency contacts that we have recorded.  We will only release our year 11, 12 and 13 students when it has been declared safe to do so. Please ensure that a discussion about safe routes to get home are part of your family plan. Older students may stay at school under our supervision until they are able to be collected if this arrangement forms part of your Family Emergency Plan. We thank you for your ongoing support.

Students will also have fun and challenge themselves as they take part in a wide range of activities including an overnight camp in the Taraika marae, swim, kayak and visit Adrenaline Forest.   What’s happening? Farewell to Andrew Savage, Deputy Principal On Tuesday, we farewelled Andrew Savage who has been one of our Deputy Principals since 2012. Andrew leaves WHS to take up a post at the Teaching Council and their gain is most certainly WHS’s loss. Many staff took the opportunity to speak at Andrew’s farewell, recognising his many qualities and numerous contributions to WHS and enjoying musical contributions from Fritz Wollner and Andrew himself.     Safer Internet Day #SID2019 – 5 February 2019 This week marked international Safer Internet Day 2019 so we thought we would share some new resources from Netsafe. You might find some of their conversation starters for ‘Teens (14-18)’ and the resource links useful: Managing Time Online: How would you tell if you were spending too much time online? If you wanted to cut back, what are some ways you would try to do this? Catfishing: What do you know about catfishing? How do you tell if someone really is who they say they are online? AgHort teacher, Claire Neiman shared photos of just some of the produce harvested from the garden over the past few days. Sport Thank you to all the students who have returned their Sports Registration Forms. If you still have to return your registration form, please hand it to Student Services by Monday 11 February. Summer sports and some winter sport pre-season practices start next week. Please be aware that if your son/daughter has been selected for a summer sports team, this takes priority over the winter sport preseason training.  If you have concerns about any sport or training please feel free to contact me to discuss options on sport@whs.school.nz Weekly sports draws are always displayed on the sports noticeboard outside the office in the Lower Gym as well as on the school website.  On the website, www.whs.school.nz click on the sports icon then select sports draws. From the drop down arrow select your child’s sport. Finally, for all netballers, click and read important information about the 2019 season.     • 2025 SOUNZ Commission for Orchestra and Sistema Youth Orchestra
      • In September 2025 Orchestra Wellington and Arohanui Strings will be performing together at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington. This commission is an opportunity for a composer to create a work of 4-5 minutes featuring the combined forces of Orchestra Wellington and Arohanui Strings. The resulting work will need to have separate parts at an appropriate level for Arohanui Strings. Arohanui Strings is a Sistema-inspired music education programme based in Lower Hutt. The selected composer is expected to work closely with the group throughout the rehearsal process.

      • The Porirua Hospital Museum and Resource Centre is housed in F-Ward, built in 1909 as part of the Porirua Hospital campus. It records the history of the development of mental health services in New Zealand from what can be considered their inception in 1844. The Museum, a Category 1 historic place, contains a collection of artefacts from the history of Porirua Hospital, including its time as a psychiatric facility.

    • The Thistle Inn
      • The Thistle Inn was built in 1840. she is the oldest hotel in NZ still trading from the original site. In July 1866 she was burnt to the ground but by December the same year she was back operating. You will see the original beer cellar through the glass floor. She is a Category 1 historic place building and was completely restored in 2004 (as close as possible to how she was in 1866).
