    • Getting rid of traffic
      • Last week’s cautious city council move towards keeping traffic out of more of Cuba Street, and converting part of Dixon Street for pedestrians, should be welcomed by almost everyone, except for the few who still think that customers only arrive in cars. Councillors voted 11-3 to limit private vehicle access on Cuba Street between Ghuznee Street and Vivian Street, and on Dixon Street between Taranaki Street and Victoria Street.

    • Are EVs going to save us?
      • I spend my days working to build walking, cycling, and public transport infrastructure so I am pretty used to hearing something along the lines of “why bother with this stuff, when EV’s are going to save us from our climate problems?” Usually, I shrug this question off by discussing the many other reasons why we should boost active transport, such as healthier people and reduced congestion on the roads.

    • Wind damage at Quartz Hill
      • Wellington was battered by a wild storm with severe northerly winds on Sunday night 11 June 2006. Bob ZL2AMI was at Quartz Hill during the storm, participating in the ANARTS RTTY contest. He reports that wind was the strongest that has experienced at the station. Evidently the wind was gusting up to 145 km/hr at Mt KauKau, which is only a few kilometres away from Quartz Hill.

    • Back on track: a missed opportunity
      • A few weeks back, there was an article in the Dominion Post entitled "Commuters return to cars". The trouble was, since it only showed relative figures ("Peak-time passenger growth soared 11.6 per cent in mid-year as fuel prices peaked. This had slowed to about 9 per cent by September."), it was hard to tell whether passenger transport numbers were actually falling, or just growing more slowly.

    • End of Year 2008
      • Hi Everyone. One last weekly report for the year. AGM and Turkey Trot Well done Jillian in organising the Turkey Trot and laying out the route. Admittedly there were sections of the track where crampons would have come in useful as one approached the snowline, but everyone enjoyed the challenge. And congratulations to Brian Pearl who won the turkey by coming in 7 seconds within his estimated time.

    • Public Service 11/4/2009
      • Brooklyn Northern Public Servants first home game of the season started well - aided by the ferocious wind at Happy Valley, they laid siege to the Karori goal for much of the first half. Unfortunately the football gods were on Karori's side, who despite barely leaving their own half for the first forty-five minutes, took the lead on the stroke of half-time after a mistimed back-pass. Brooklyn did

    • Basin Reserve Historic Walk
      • On Sunday the Mt Victoria Historical Society hosted a walk around the Basin Reserve, highlighting the heritage of this important precinct. The walk was hosted by Joanna Newman and Alan Olliver from the Historical Society. Thanks to the Wellington wind and the bells of the nearby Carillon, the audio quality is a bit patchy in parts, but the tour is an interesting insight into the heritage of the Basin Reserve.

    • Valentines day: roses are what?
      •   Margaret Stoddart, Roses, 1920s In Europe during the 1300s February 14th was thought to be the day when birds paired off to mate. This date was originally an ancient Greco-Roman pagan festival, and was later called St Valentines Day Feast by the Church. Since the 1300s, on February 14th each year, roses (and flowers in general),  have been widely accepted as gifts and Saint Valentines Day is now
