Dragonboating This weekend our staff and student teams will be out on the water. If you are in the city at the following times, head down to the waterfront to support them. Staff teams will be on the water on Saturday 7 March at 10.00am, 10.40am, 12.20am, 1.50pm and 3.50pm. On Sunday 8 March, it is our students’ term. Their races will take place at 10.20am, 11.00am, 11.50am with the time for the finals to be confirmed. Drama Camp 2020  Year 13 Drama students travelled to Featherston this week for a three day rehearsal intensive. Isolated from distraction we took the scripted word and forged this into physical action. Hard work, focus and commitment by the students means we are now looking good for opening night on Monday 23rd March.  While Wairarapa sunshine demanded intervals of bush walks and river swims we still ploughed through an extraordinary amount of material.  We look forward to sharing with you the fruits of our labour as follows: Every Brilliant Thing by Duncan MacMillan Monday 23rd – Wednesday 25th March, 4pm and 6pm on the Riley Hall stage Girls Like That by Evan Placey Tuesday 31st March at 6pm, Wednesday 1st March at 4pm and 7pm Year 12 visit City Gallery Photography students had a treat this week listening to Shaun Waugh talk about his passion and inspiration for creating his work . Students were then taken through a workshop on developing their own cyanotype based on cubism. The students really enjoyed the opportunity to meet an artist and get involved in a hands on workshop.  Te Papa workshop Te Papa  has developed some new provocations to get audiences and in particular young adults thinking about art in the galleries in new ways. Te papa has invited a group of WHS students to trial these ideas. Last Monday,the students went into the galleries trying out and giving feedback on the provocations,  and what worked for them. The students feedback will definitely feed into what Te Papa is planning to produce in coming exhibitions. Thanks to Samson Bodkin, Eve Ashby, Dillon Parker and Molly Henry who took part in this workshop. He Kākano supported by Year 11 PE The He Kākano students were supported by a YR11 PE class during their mainstream in practice-integrated, interactive adapted involvement with peers session in the gym this week.       Careers Gateway opportunity with Chorus Telecommunications The Chorus Gateway program is run one day per week over eight weeks and is made up of two unit standards totaling 21 credits at Levels 2 and 3. The course is run by iskills, a Category One NZQA private training establishment that offers the only telecommunications technician apprenticeship in New Zealand. This course will include classroom-based learning, hands-on network lab activities, and in-field observation. Students may be introduced to industry contacts regarding employment and recruiting opportunities following successful completion of the course. They are looking for students who: Show an interest in the future of technology Enjoy learning about modern tech devices such as mobile, tablet, and device applications  Have a natural curiosity of how technologies work  Are innovative and enjoy new challenges Work well with teams  This Gateway placement is by application, applications close Friday 13 March, to apply please email paula.willis@whs.school.nz and complete a Gateway Expression of Interest form available from Student Services or on the school website, the form must be signed by a parent or caregiver.     • Hope vs Choat
      • Recently in David Choat’s blog he explains that a previous post recalling his observations in his first Capital and Coast DHB meeting led to him receiving a note from Board Chair Dr Virginia Hope (who was recently appointed to both the CCDHB and the Hutt Valley DHB – criticised as a first step towards amalgamation of the two health boards) as a breach of the CCDHB media policy (which effectively says that the Chair should be the person responsible for any comments for the Board) Hope’s explanation is not entirely clear from David’s post, only that it had caused her distress. It would be a fair point to make had Choat attempted to represent the Board exclusively. Yet, if anything, the article reads about what he did and thought at the meeting. I can’t see how what he said would have been any different had Choat been in a public meeting, or in a one-on-one chance meeting with one of his constituents. In fact the post by Choat in question was entitled “Reflections on my first board meeting” Go read the post for Choat’s response, which I think reflects his commitment to transparency with the public on (open) board matters being debated as part of a publicly accountable body. So, what precisely does the policy do – here is a copy (1MB PDF). It was last updated and debated at a meeting in August 2009. The comms manager wasn’t present and Helene Ritchie was the only member to vote against it. Odd. It’s no surprise how unworkable the policy has been in practice. It basically bars any direct interaction with the public by board members. I wonder what kind of world the drafters of this policy were living in when they thought that such restrictions on public debate would actually work. Would it be surprising that Dr Hope doesn’t agree with David’s very blunt but arguably popular slogan “Care not cuts” as a way to deal with the challenges at the CCDHB: “Cuts is really the wrong word. Savings, I think, is a better word” (The Wellingtonian, 6 January 2011) Clearly, any Chair would not want to have to battle the framing of an alternative viewpoint as well as the controversial challenges for an organisation like those faced by the CCDHB, but it also makes me wonder what the Chair’s personal direction will be in the Board’s response to those challenges? Regardless, there appears to be a developing division between the new board member and the new chair. Already, Choat has said that the matter of the media policy will be on the agenda at the next meeting. There doesn’t appear to be much that the Chair could do, but the board (particularly the publically elected members) should be mindful of the public’s need to be informed unfettered by the spin that sometimes happens and refuse to punish Choat. The next meeting is on February 4 at 8.30am (in the Board Room on 11th Floor of the Grace Neill Block, Wellington Regional Hospital on Riddiford Street, Newtown), and you can attend in person to make sure the Board get the point.     • BNU 1sts v Waterside Karori - 1st June 2013
      • Karori Park #2, 12. After promising results in recent weeks, we were looking to complete a trifecta of wins against the top 3 teams. 1st place Karori would pose a different threat, difficult to break down and dangerous at set pieces. BNU started the stronger side, quickly settling into our rhythm, knocking the ball around confidently and dominating midfield. There were appeals for a BNU goal after the ball may have crossed the line, a mass of bodies made it difficult for the ref to see and had to wave play on. After 20 minutes of dominance, we fell off the pace a little, inviting Karori back into the game. Karori were awarded a free kick after 27 minutes. They threw a number of players forward and made it count with a strong headed finish to go 1-nil up with their only clear cut chance of the half. We didn't panic and kept at Karori. Paul Clune squeezed home from a tight angle, to equalise seconds before the break. 1-1 at half time.

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 26/12/2020 - 09:10 - 16:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  75 A 15m yacht broke its rudder approximately 2NM west of Mana Island whilst crossing to the South Island. MR1 was tasked by Police to tow them home. By the time we got to them the wind had got up to 25-35kts and they had drifted 7NM west of Mana Island. We towed them back in challenging conditions and put them at anchor just outside the Mana bar, as they were unable to cross it at low tide.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 21/01/2021 - 17:00 - 20:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  31 Amazing Grace (modified lifeboat)was used as a tow exercise for pre operational assessment training 1) crew briefed and were to develop an operations plan, this was reviewed by the crews of MR1/MR2. a final plan was approved by the 2 x masters. 2) Plan was completed, pre-event planning included taking mooring rings up to the poles, briefimg the owner, setting the rafting system up. 3) Olan was executed, not hazards developed that were not planned for, event completed with no errors.       • Howdy, y’all! Trusting everybody is well and good as we (finally!) head into the cooler months – I mean, you really can’t complain TOO much when it’s blimmin’ JUNE and the weather hasn’t been too savage, right?! Anyhow – plenty to be getting on with here at t’Boat – we were surprised and chuffed to get a shoutout from Mark Kozelek of Sun Kil Moon at his recent show, for an Andre Segovia CD set he bought off us last time he visited Wellington in 2008, and we are also looking forward to forthcoming shows from Nadia Reid, Aldous Harding, Warpaint (!!!) and Lloyd Cole… You may also wish to spend some quality time with exceptional new releases from the aforementioned Aldous Harding -her glorious third album, “Designer” is a cracker, along with Mavis Staples‘ excellent Ben Harper-written/ produced set “We Get By”, Sharon Van Etten‘s lovely “Remind Me Tomorrow”, the return of Vampire Weekend with the hefty “Father Of The Bride”, or Big Thief‘s mysterious and lovely “UFOF”… we are also packing a fresh batch of stylin’ Slow Boat tees in some new colours and a range of sizes – a charcoal coloured one, and a reddish-marle are my picks of the litter… We also have tonnes of new posters to brighten up the walls of your pad, DVDs and box sets to hunker down with, a heap of nice priced new vinyl from the good folks at Universal Music NZ, and if you were wanting a special order from the US, say – an order going early next week… do feel free to drop us a line and enquire about anything you fancy.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 08/06/2021 - 18:30 - 22:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  3 Total Volunteer Hours:  40 Multiple reports of a vessel with 3 or 4 POB broken down (via victim to Police on 111) or overdue (family to CG Ops Centre and friends to CG Mana public phone). Location (estimate) varied between 6NM of coastline between Makara and Little Titahi Bay. Limited comms from victim via 1 cellphone that was down to 20% battery. Information very confused and unreliable. Started with coastline search and trying to identify potential lights. Received TXT indicating we had gone past them and they had drifted further out near Mana Island. Spotted a orange flickering light about 3NM in the distance.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 09/11/2022 - 20:00 - 23:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  0 Total Volunteer Hours:  21 A member of the public walking along the shore between Titahi Bay and Green Point observed a vessel at anchor a few meters off the shore with nobody on board. A small black fluffy dog was observed swimming from the boat to shore and running around the coastline in a semi frantic state.  The informant said the vessel was observed empty for 20 minutes and felt like something was wrong. Te Awarua Rescue responded with a crew to search for the vessel. We searched the entire shoreline from Titahi Bay to a few hundred metres past Open Bay. Nothing was found.
