    Yan pushes innovation to protect economy

    • Mayoral candidate Jack Yan believes his policies on creativity and innovation are needed more than ever in light of the recent Fonterra disaster and has released a statement and a new video (speaking in English, te Reo, French and Cantonese, no sign language sadly) highlighting the need for the next mayor to be able to bridge cultures at a global level: Wellington’s innovation can be a safety net when Fonterra-level scares hit If mayors aren’t part of this dialogue, talking to the top 40 cities in the world and opening doors for our exporters, then we’re going to be affected terribly when our nation brand is damaged,’ he says. ‘We have seen real evidence of this week.’ ‘In the meantime, Wellington is the home of companies like Weta and Xero, along with numerous independents¬ has a reputation that can stand head and shoulders above this scandal.’ Mr Yan, who issued his manifesto for the Wellington mayoral election in April, months before his opponents, has remained on message throughout about the need for Wellington to become a global hub for innovation and identifying export champions. Given Wellington’s urban base, those champions were likely to be outside the primary industries. ‘New Zealand is a primary products’ nation and I recognize the sector’s importance. However, this scare shows just why it’s important for cities to back up national economic activity and to have strong brands themselves.’ ‘Wellington is in an enviable place to deliver greater innovation, with high-growth firms and strong creativity, which will be more rigorously grown if I am elected,’ he says. Mr Yan has authored books on branding and has practised in the area since the 1980s. His work at the Swedish branding think-tank, the Medinge Group, has seen him lead the way on international brand thinking, making him better equipped to develop a proper city brand, get Wellington businesses exporting, and being an advocate for them globally. He agrees with earlier commentators, including Prime Minister John Key, that the scare has harmed New Zealand’s national brand. As he predicted in his 2010 and 2013 campaigns, strong city brands will have to come to the fore to promote economic activity in export markets. Mr Yan says, ‘There is a certain level of pride in saying something comes from Wellington, but we haven’t recognized this properly. We have export earners here and by promoting a diverse economy, we can ensure that we have more of a safety net when scandals in our primary sector occur. ‘I have long been concerned since the days of the “New Zealand Way” brand in the 1990s that we were missing the mark on promoting our nation. Even then, I was outspoken on saying that the likes of Karen Walker and Tait were being excluded. Yet Kiwi innovation is unique: it comes from a sense of isolation and independence,’ he recalls. ‘We have export markets criticizing our “100 Per Cent Pure” campaign again.     • Every second Tuesday lunchtime, Christina Barton, Director of the Adam Art Gallery and co-curator of In Relation: Performance Works by Peter Roche & Linda Buis 1979–1985, will select a performance in the exhibition and read the relevant original notes drafted by the artists or compiled by their most assiduous audience member, the critic and curator Wystan Curnow. Her idea is to bring a live dimension into the gallery as a way of animating the documentation on display and sharing first-hand insights in their unedited form. Each reading will be between 10 and 20 minutes with time for questions after.

    • As much as we Wellingtonians are happy to live in a "cold-yet-cultural" city, most of us would have to admit that this "summer" has been pretty gruelling. Which is why yesterday, with it's balmy temperatures and spectacular sunset, seemed to switch so many of us into outdoors mode for one delicious evening. Most of Waitangi Park was humming by about 5:30, but even though the lawn was relatively dry and looking sweetly bucolic with its lush grass and clover, it had attracted a grand total of eleven people, mostly on the berms around the edge.

These memories are brought to life through images, movies and artefacts. New Zealand lost more men during the 100 days of fighting than any other commonwealth country - 845 on one day alone during the First Battle of Passchendaele, 12 October, 1917. The people of Flanders and, more widely, the people of Belgium have never forgotten this sacrifice, which is commemorated in this very special exhibition.

    • Ōwhiro Bay has been abandoned by the bus network, according to a new report. During off-peak times, it takes two buses and over 45 minutes to get from Ōwhiro Bay to the city centre. The suburb is disproportionately affected by bus cancellations. Its residents are fed up. Now, they’ve taken matters into their own hands, writing a twenty-thousand-word report to prove their own experience. Jack Graham and Arunan Noble are both Ōwhiro Bay residents and, in the spirit of full disclosure, friends of the author. They both live with their parents while studying at VUW. After many years of being disappointed by the bus system, hope was initially raised when Metlink announced incoming improvements at the start of 2024.

• • Half price fares to be extended on Metlink services

    • Metlink has welcomed the Government’s extension of half price public transport fares until the end of June 2023. The extension, announced today by Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, is part of the Government’s ongoing support intended to ease the cost-of-living pressures. Metlink Commercial, Strategy & Investments Manager Tim Shackleton said the half price fares extension would enable passengers to ready themselves for the eventual go live date for the Community Connect scheme which permanently reduces public transport fares for Community Services Card (CSC) holders by 50 percent. “With around 90,000 CSC holders in the Wellington region, Metlink has worked with the Ministry of Social Development to develop a system that provides quick and easy access to half price fares when the scheme rolls out,” says Tim Shackleton.

    • Every second-month young people come together at Zeal Kāpiti to showcase their skills. From experienced performers to new artists, live sound engineers, photographers, and event managers, this event is made by young people for young people. The Kāpiti team of young people arrive at midday to start setting up the stage, lighting, sound gear, green room, clear out the hangs and events spaces, and fill the centre with chairs and beanbags. If the weather is nice they open up our massive roller door which opens up a whole wall in our events space and creates an awesome indoor outdoor flow. Young people start rolling in, some grab the Zeal DSLR cameras and start taking photos and videos while the performers are getting prepped in the green room upstairs.

    • We got a rare insight into Greater Wellington Regional Council-Wellington City Council dynamics when regional councillor Judith Aitken posted this odd statement on Celia Wade-Brown’s Facebook about her (last time I checked, fellow Labour Party) colleague Daran Ponter: This prompted the following stinging rebuke from Daran Ponter and Wellington City councillor Paul Eagle: Good on Ponter for calling her out. Oh, Baby Boomer with a 100% subsided Gold Card, please tell me more about how we can’t increase public transport subsidies. This is staggering. If you’re a Regional Councillor, you would need to have been hiding under a rock for the past few years not to be aware of the issues around public transport. And you’d expect someone who has been on the GWRC since 2001 to already be discussing issues with their WCC colleagues and community stakeholders. Aitken doesn’t even live in the constituency area she is elected to represent (Wellington City), enjoys fully subsidised public transport with her tax-payer funded Gold Card, and is one of those local government shapeshifters, like Helene Ritchie, who get elected to both a council and a health board purely on name recognition, then aren’t in a hurry to leave anytime soon. She should retire and let a new, fresh, and forward thinking person take her seat and actually represent Wellington City. They deserve better.

The 10-month programme aims to develop individuals so they can make meaningful contributions to their club and community, leaving a lasting impact. The workshops also cover various topics such as effective communication, leadership skills, self-assessment of strengths and weaknesses, understanding the organisation and its strengths and challenges, gaining insights into the workings of different clubs, and learning how to make positive change. • • Archbishop’s column: Facing a future full of hope

    • Opinion Archbishop John Dew September 2013 Since early May many, if not most, people in the archdiocese have responded to my invitation to discuss the future of the archdiocese. I am grateful to all parishioners, lay pastoral leaders and clergy who have generously given their energy to reimagining the archdiocese in a consultation process using the document A Future Full of Hope. Submissions from pastoral areas and parishes were due at the end of last month, after Wel-Com went to print. I do not know what has been proposed yet, but from what I have heard, I am thrilled that so many people have seen this consultation as an opportunity to grasp a new understanding of the mission of the Church. People have seized this chance to ask questions that enable each parish community to dream of a new and vital Church, to embrace new opportunities to evangelise and re-evangelise, to re-commit themselves to realising the kingdom of God more fully. They have talked about the diocesan commitment to the fact that we are God’s priestly people who share a responsibility to witness to God’s unfailing love and to bring Christ’s healing presence into our needy world. Change is unsettling under any circumstances, but even more so when it affects our faith and spiritual home, the parish. I sometimes wish that we did not have to ask these hard questions and make such changes.But, as I looked across the archdiocese, I could see that some change was inevitable and we needed to start now,  for all the reasons you know: limited financial resources huge insurance premiums the uncertain future of some parish buildings, and fewer clergy. If we approach planning and change from a negative standpoint, our proposed solutions could be reactive and focused on the present, whereas approaching the future based on faith, vision and mission will reveal wonderful new possibilities. As together we face both opportunities and challenges, we are asked to be open to the spirit of God. It is not easy for the spirit to work with illusion and elusion, but God revels in reality. Cardinal John Henry Newman once said, ‘In a higher world it is otherwise, but here, to live is to change, to be perfect is to have changed often.’ Therefore, as we look at our, as yet uncertain future, let us remember that God is with us. As Jesus said in John 14: ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled, trust in God still and trust in me’. Our reality is that we are the people of God who, through baptism, are called to be Church, to witness to the presence of Jesus in our midst and to live the radical call to discipleship that the gospel demands. Therefore ask yourself the question: What do I need to do today to create the condition for the possibility of belief and witness for myself and for those who will come after me? Remember, we face a future full of hope. Be not afraid.

    • Things I learnt whilst collecting at New World Miramar this week … They have Free WiFi You can use free wet wipes to clean the trolley handle before you start shopping You can dispose of your plastic bags for recycling Peter Croft’s favourite fruit is oranges at the de Kids still get a free slice of luncheon at the deli There are 110 white tiles in each section of the floor 1kg of pre-packed lemons cost $4.99 To ensure you have clean hands there is a hand sanitiser in the vege section – on the left One guy from USA has lived here for 3 years and only just discovered we have 10 cent coins There is a guy in Miramar who views shopping as the least favourite thing to do If you forget your grocery bag, you might be able to borrow a boomerang bag. There is a typo in the sign Thanks, see you soon (Can you spot it? Ask Lucy and she will agree with me!) One thing I did notice was a family who tied their dog up outside while they did their shopping. I wonder if anyone asked the dog what he wanted his life to look like – to be in a loving family but not able to come and go freely, or to live in the wild and not be loved? This Sunday we will consider where we find ourselves – how do we measure up with what we want? – and how can we prepare ourselves for what is just ahead of us? See you Sunday. Pastor Dave
