Bypassing the truth
- WellUrban
- How sweet. The competition to name the Inner City "Bypass" has been won by Te Aro School, with the name "Karo" Drive. Apparently, "The K represents the kids, Aro their school. Karo is also a small native New Zealand tree that produces sweetly scented red flowers in Spring and grows very well in Wellington". Maybe it's just me, but I don't usually associate "sweetly scented red flowers" with a bloody great arterial road that's been shoved through a city neighbourhood.

The war memorial motorway
- Wellington Scoop
- Everyone supported the concept of lowering State Highway One into a cut-and-covered tunnel under Buckle Street. The alternative – to have a main road running through the National War Memorial Park – was stupid. No one liked the stupid idea except the NZ Transport Agency. And the Agency intends to overrule the wishes of Wellingtonians. Its decision: “Buckle Street will remain at street level.”

Mount Street Cemetery
- The Mount Street Cemetery was the first cemetery in Wellington for Catholic burials and contains the graves of the first nuns and priests in Wellington. It remained open until 1891 although burials continued in existing family plots until 1954. The earliest surviving grave marker dates from 1851, and the latest from 1954. Although only around 200 headstones survive, it is estimated that there could have been as many as 750 to 800 burials. Many of the early markers were simple wooden crosses, which have long since vanished.
