Take 5!! #11
- Slow Boat Records
- Today, folks, a terrific Take 5 selection from one of our absolute faves, Tamaki Makaurau pop-rockers The Beths!! Having had their world domination plans in 2020 cruelly curtailed by that pesky pandemic, they instead doubled down with an extended tour of Aotearoa, including no less than FIVE Wellington performances in three days, along with their emotional homecoming at the Auckland Town Hall, now captured on their soon-come live double LP "Auckland, New Zealand 2020), which we should have in stock just as soon as our biggest city makes it out of Level 4 lockdown...1- The B-52's "Love Shack" (Live at The Pavillion, the Woodlands, TX 1990)2- Momma "Double Dare"3- fanclubwallet "Car Crash in G Major"4- Kathy McCord "I'm Leaving Home (She's Leaving Home)"5- Willie Griffin "I Love You"Thank you, Beths - superb!!

I love trees but not sure about this project...any views?
- Iona Pannett
- Thanks to Karen Fifield for pointing out this project to me of growing a forest within an apartment building in Milan. Brilliant to green our buildings but wondering how it would be to live in such a place and whether the dominance of the trees takes something away from the building. But a good effort, integrating the built and natural environment well remains a challenge.

Growth for Growth’s Sake
- Eye of the Fish
- “Art for Art’s sake – Money for God’s sake”. Or as we have it now, Growth for Growth’s sake. We now have a Council that has passed the Spatial Plan, in a decision that some have described being a battle over young vs old. Up to 80,000 more people will be able to live in our city, in a gradual process over the next 30+ years.

10 reasons to support character
- Live Wellington - a liveable city by design
- So much has changed since the Wellington City Council voted in June 2021 to strip demolition protection from more than two-thirds of the city's character areas. LIVE WELLington argues it's time for a re-think, and to strike a better balance. We provided this letter to Wellington councillors, in the lead up to the notification of the proposed District Plan on 23 June 2022.

PHOTOS: Riverblind
- Wellington Live Music
- Some of the crowd at ValveSolid rock with an almost operatic vocal style is how I would attempt to describe Riverblind in one sentence. Lead singer/guitarist Dave Kempton has an incredibly powerful, smooth and melodic voice. Backed up with solid drums from Tim Whitta, and Dan Simpson throwing himself around the stage with his 6 string bass, these guys are a surprisingly powerful live act.

Statues or Fun?
- Sharon Blaikie
- So, $350 000 for a statue that will be passe in a couple of years. One of those statues like the Queen Victoria ones that cities try to fob off on each other. Yet, those events that help to make Wellington a great place to live or visit like the Cuba Street Carnival and the Newtown Fair can't be held for lack of money. How absurd!

CubaDupa presents GO HOME STAY HOME
- Cubadupa
- CubaDupa Presents Go Home Stay Home, a Live-Streamed Musical Happening Wellington festival set to unite the community through virtual music festival Following the cancellation of CubaDupa, the festival team have been working on a remedy—a virtual way to celebrate the creativity and community that would have taken over Cuba Street on the 28th and 29th March, with over 1500 artists and 450 performances throughout Wellington’s favourite precinct. And so, Go Home Stay Home – a live-streamed virtual festival has been arranged to keep you smiling through week four of lockdown with a selection of the CubaDupa 2020 artists. Festival Director Gerry Paul says “This is a way of keeping the CubaDupa fire burning until we next hit the streets. And it’s a time when the creativity and talent of our artists are playing such an important part in keeping us sane and inspired – so tune in and come together in solidarity – he waka eke noa!” The programme for Go Home Stay Home may be on a micro scale compared to the monumental street festival, but you can expect it to be bursting with the same energy and vibrancy CubaDupa is known for. On Saturday 18 April from 5 pm, settle in for an evening of sweet tunes from fresh local artists alongside well-loved homegrown acts, streaming live on the CubaDupa Facebook page. Auckland alt-pop-rock band Ha the Unclear will join us from the comfort of their bubble, along with Miss June who will treat the audience to a solo set—a rare occurrence for the noisy, energetic punk rock four-piece. After a two year stint in London, Wellington rapper Name UL is back, along with the always engaging Same Name Confusion, synth-maestro Dayle Jellyman, dream pop songwriter Nikita 雅涵 Tu-Bryant and rising alt-pop artist RIIKI. Usually a band of seven musicians, Dr Reknaw will present a special stripped back solo set, and Maori world-roots performer Māmā Mihirangi will also perform solo. The Ping Pong Party People will wrap up the night with a 90s trance party that’ll scratch your dancing itch. A special thanks goes to WellingtonNZ and the Wellington City Council for their support on this initiative and making Go Home Stay Home possible. CubaDupa is encouraging viewers to donate to MusicHelps, the New Zealand charity that provides vital support to members of the New Zealand music community in times of illness, distress and hardship. There will be a donate button on the Go Home Stay Home live stream for viewers to contribute to MusicHelps. CubaDupa Presents Go Home Stay Home will be free to watch on the CubaDupa Facebook page from 5:00 pm NZST Saturday 18 April. Here is the schedule: Ha the Unclear 5:00 PM 5:20 PM Māmā Mihirangi 5:30 PM 5:50 PM Dayle Jellyman 6:00 PM 6:20 PM Same Name Confusion 6:30 PM 6:50 PM Name UL 7:00 PM 7:20 PM KITA 7:30 PM 7:50 PM Dr Reknaw 8:00 PM 8:20 PM Miss June 8:30 PM 8:50 PM RIIKI 9:00 PM 9:20 PM Ping Pong Party People 9:30 PM 9:45 PM For quick access to our artist pages, click the following link. https://linktr.ee/cubadupa To head straight to the CubaDupa facebook page for live streaming, click the following link. Review: Lipstick
- Salient
- How do I even begin to describe this band? I’ve been dying to write about Lipstick since I saw them for the first time at Valhalla in April. Without a doubt, Lipstick has become my favorite band to see live, and I’ve been hooked since that very first show. Since their debut as a band at the end of March, they’ve become a prominent presence in the gig scene—and for good reason.

The Mighty Booth
- The Wellingtonista
- After every election there are geographical analyses of voting patterns, inevitably followed by suggestions that certain regions should secede and form their own country. Such analyses are often at electorate level, but there's a lot of fine detail below that, and a cell of socialist insurgents might live just around the corner from an enclave of conservative curmudgeons. So I made the following map of Wellington voting tendencies at a booth-by-booth level.

Rethinking the airport barrier
- Wellington Scoop
- Despite being surrounded by high hills, Wellington is fortunate to have an international airport that is under 10km from its CBD, with flight approaches over Cook Strait to the south and just missing the Newland hills to the north. The drawback is the runway which forms a major physical barrier over 2km long between the city and the airport terminal and the growing population of over 20,000 residents who live east of the airport on Miramar Peninsula.

A cultural asset building -v- lost inner-city green space - what do you think?
- Inner-City Wellington
- What do you think about a Fale being built on Frank Kitts Park - would it be a cultural asset or a lost part of the city’s waterfront green space? Why think about this? This is a really important decision for inner-city residents, particularly, because we don’t live in leafy suburbs with a garden, and berms and pavements at the end of our drive. And we don’t have big nearby public playing fields like many of our outer neighbourhoods.

Affordable housing in the CBD – a pipe dream
- Wellington Scoop
- Partly as a byproduct of the Spatial Plan and partly because of the real-world challenge of trying to find well-priced housing in an increasingly expensive city, the current debates are tending to polarise into the people who want to preserve heritage and the people who want a sensibly-priced place to live. Both ambitions are laudable – but in Wellington, it may well be that “affordable” is not one of the feasible options, no matter how many ratty old flats we demolish.

- An adaptation of Shakespeare’s narrative poem “The rape of Lucrece” by Binge Culture Collective. It’s a visual+audio installation at the Toi Poneke Gallery plus a live performance on Thursday and Friday evenings. ORCHESTRA WELLINGTON presents FIREBIRDSATURDAY 13 MAY, 2017,...
- Orchestra Wellington
- ORCHESTRA WELLINGTON presents FIREBIRD SATURDAY 13 MAY, 2017, 7:30PM MICHAEL FOWLER CENTRE, WELLINGTON Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No 1 in C Major — John Elmsly Violin Concerto (Orchestra Wellington Composer in Residence) — Igor Stravinsky The Firebird (Complete Ballet Score) — Marc Taddei, Conductor Jun Hong Loh, Violin (Grand Prize Winner, Gisborne International Music Competition 2015) Orchestra Wellington opens its concert season with two works that welcome the arrival of young genius upon the world stage. Stravinsky had barely finished his studies when the great impresario of the Ballets Russes, Diaghilev, recognised his talent and commissioned the work that would make him world famous: the Firebird. Music Director Marc Taddei calls the Firebird a fantastically imaginative blend. “Stravinsky takes the folk music of Russia and mixes it with the exotic orchestration of his teacher, Rimsky Korsakov, and the harmonic language of the great Impressionists. If one score deserves to be called ‘magical’, it’s this one. It’s a masterpiece!” Taddei says he is thrilled to present the music for the full ballet. “Normally in a concert performance, the Firebird is heard in shortened suites,” Taddei says. “The full score is rarely heard, and it is a revelation,” he says. Taddei decided to pair the Firebird with Beethoven’s First Symphony. “I like the idea of hearing how two young geniuses announced their voice to the world,” he says. The First Symphony shows Beethoven’s mastery of the symphonic form developed by his teacher Haydn, and then takes a confident step beyond that into the musical territory that he would one day revolutionise. To complete the programme, the Orchestra presents the world premiere performance of one of New Zealand’s great senior composers - John Elmsly. Elmsly’s Violin Concerto will feature the Singaporean violinist Jun Hong Loh, winner of the 2015 Gisborne International Music Competition. Taddei calls 2017, “the season of the Impresario”, highlighting the link between the visionary founder of the Ballets Russes and the major body of works created at his behest: works that will be a major focus of the Orchestra’s performances this year. “This year begins with the promise of extraordinary innovation and genius - a promise that will be fully realised throughout the season.” Photography: Jon Trimmer and Judith Mohekey in The Firebird, 1973 Courtesy of the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
