A tool to prevent gentrification?
- Talk Wellington
- Everyone wants their neighbourhood to be a better place to live, but how do you avoid the fundamental laws of the market forcing people out who’ve often lived and loved there for generations? One tool can help… Gentrification. It’s one of the few genuinely bad things about the otherwise process of making nicer places to...

Aisle be Back:
- Wellington Club Weekly
- By Kevin McCarthy I’m very confident the All Blacks can win the world cup. The 2015 World Cup, unfortunately. After two weeks of doing nothing on an actual live rugby pitch, the 2023 iteration are thankfully finally back in the actual tournament. Not so much flying under the radar, as failing to turn on their...

Sideline Conversions 2 September (some rugby news and information to start the week)
- Wellington Club Weekly
- After a lull this past weekend, the rugby is exploding again. There is live rugby on every day for the next several days. No fewer than four college-aged events on this week in Wellington and the Hutt Valley, something stretching plenty of resources – none probably more so than those of the WRRA. Two of...

Aisle be Back: All Blacks v Uruguay (the wash-up)
- Wellington Club Weekly
- By Kevin McCarthy My family used to live in the Falkland Islands, and politics being politics, if they needed better medical care, they’d take the slow boat to neighbouring Uruguay, rather than Argentina. The said ship, the Montevideo, was legendary for making people violently sick in the wild South Atlantic seas. I felt the same...

Recognised as one of the legends of New Zealand beatboxing, this former 6 times NZ champion is still making waves with his style of vocal kung fu. Whether it be on social media, live on stage or […]

Wellington LTP submission guide: from up sh*t creek to longer-term better
- Talk Wellington
- It’s LTP season, and Wellington City’s version of the council budgeting challenge has had more scrutiny than most. Here’s the bigger context for all LTPs (plus some TW submission tips for Wellington City-ites) Infrastructure x density Ahh, infrastructure. The Leaving Party
- Lōemis
- Katherine Mansfield, one of New Zealand’s greatest writers, left New Zealand for good in 1908. Before doing so, she threw a leaving party and invited all her friends. The party had many of her favourite ingredients: live music, good company, food offerings, tea, exquisite gin, parlour games, and elements of the occult and divination.

Fraser Ross and the Felt Tips
- Newtown Festival
- Playing solo or with friends (the Felt Tips), Fraser Ross is a gypsy-folk man. He is a keen lyrics man, and a inter-song banterer. Sometimes he dabbles in ballads, sometimes a quicker rinka-chink. His live shows are rare and exciting, his album (And Birds Do Sing) is brilliant but slow-burning.

2008 Aro Valley Meet the Candidates Event
- The most infamous election event in the nation takes place in the tiny community hall off Aro Street. The hall is standing room only with more crowds (known throughout the evening as ‘the outsiders’) peering in through the windows. Radio New Zealand announcer Bryan Crump has taken the evening off work to act as moderator – he warns the crowd that while heckling is encouraged he will not tolerate any ‘Hooton’s’. Each candidate will have two minutes to speak. Ninety seconds in someone will sound a gong, at two minutes they will thump the keys of a rickety old piano standing near the stage. If the candidate continues to speak they will be drenched with a high-powered water-pistol.

A City for People
- Decades of inaction have meant house prices are out of control, while old rental properties rot out from underneath us. A whole generation of people are at risk of being forced out from the central city into new suburbs sprawling north, spending hours every day in traffic jams. We believe the Spatial Plan will allow Wellington to plan for the future so that new generations of Wellingtonians can share the city we love, and have a chance to live in a home that is affordable, accessible, healthy and warm.
