Lōemis

Lōemis (pron. lew-mis) is an annual arts festival that takes place in locations around Wellington. We have a focus on staging new works that are fantastical, mystical and transformative. The festival occurs around the time of the winter solstice, Maruaroa o Takurua, and precedes Puanga and Matariki.

    • The Leaving Party
      • Katherine Mansfield, one of New Zealand’s greatest writers, left New Zealand for good in 1908. Before doing so, she threw a leaving party and invited all her friends. The party had many of her favourite ingredients: live music, good company, food offerings, tea, exquisite gin, parlour games, and elements of the occult and divination.

    • Betsy Balloon
      • Betsy is a girl who lives in a world that never stops raining. One day, forced from her home due to rising waters, she sets out to find her long-lost, talented yet unpredictable Uncle Snark. This is a rambunctious development reading; join us to witness the show’s first outing!

    • Visiting Entity
      • An unidentified biotech entity has arrived at Left Bank. You can speak with it by pressing the intercom Call button. It may also attempt to respond via Twitter, as best it can: @visiting_entity Available for viewing 24/7; ideally after dark.

    • Samhain
      • Samhain (sow-en) marks the descent towards the darkest nights of the year, and is a time when the liminal zone between the living and the dead is said to be at its thinnest. Come down to Princess Bay, engage with the spirits and watch the end of summer go down in flames to live music.

    • Ērthe
      • We are delighted to present Ērthe, an elemental effigy designed and built almost entirely out of discarded materials by Luke Scott, with Leda Farrow and an army of helpers. You can visit Ērthe daily and write notes to it (for example something you wish to dispel or happen in the future). These notes will go up in flames on the night of the winter solstice, June 21, as part of our annual Winter Solstice Procession.
