• 100 UP FOR ASHA STROM
• Wellington United's latest centurion, Asha Strom, is something of an unsung hero. Playing in a defensive midfield role she doesn't get in the spotlight like those that score the goals, she just gets on with her job, a job she does so well and has set a very high standard in she really has to have an exceptional game to get noticed. 2018 Dutch import Suzanne Giesen, commented on her time at the club "it was fantastic playing with Asha, as she did all the hard work which allowed me to push forward and attack more" Playing in the role she does, Asha doesn't get many chances to score goals, and while she has scored just four in her 100 games they have all been memorable shots from about 25-30 meters. Goals that her teammates have dubbed "Asha specials"

This is a special sponsorship relationship, as Jarden was originally set up by legendary All Black, and Victoria University Rugby Club player, Ron Jarden. The OBU Premiers will be known as ‘Old Boys University Jarden’ and the Jarden logo will be on the front of the Premiers jersey. Jarden is New Zealand’s leading investment and advisory group. Ron Jarden started the company 60 years ago, running the company until he passed away in 1977. Operating in both New Zealand and Australia, they provide services including investment banking, capital solutions and wealth management. Peter McFarlane, OBU Chairman, is delighted with the new relationship. ”It is great to have Jarden as a sponsor. Ron won three Jubilee Cups with our club in the 1950s and is a famous All Black, so he is a legend at our club. This sponsorship relationship will help fund our club’s high-performance programme. We have had a lot of success in recent years, and Jarden’s support will help us continue to grow and develop our players on and off the field.” The team at Jarden are equally excited about the relationship – “The club is built around committed volunteers and alumni who support and mentor youth. They foster values of team-first, continuous improvement, and whanau – being a part of something greater. These all link closely with Jarden’s own values. ” Ron Jarden scored 145 tries in 134 first-class games. This included 16 tests for the All Blacks, 63 games for Wellington while also representing NZ Universities and North Island. He also won the Super Award at the 1951 Halberg Sports Awards. You can find more about Jarden HERE The post New Major Sponsor Announcement appeared first on OBU Rugby.

• Squid - the inside story
• It’s a lovely spring Friday morning in Wellington. What else would we (Pamela, Chris and Judy - our brave and newest squid team member) be doing other than dissecting a couple of nice fresh squid from the local wholesale fish supplier? It’s all in the interest of bringing you a bigger and better exhibition on the colossal squid, as we come to grips with squid anatomy (literally). We quickly discovered that not all squid are the same on the inside (surprise) and that once inside them it can be a messy business. Note to self - try to avoid puncturing the ink sac until the end. We started with an arrowsquid. We checked the arms and the tentacles - all eight arms and two tentacles present and correct. The suckers on the arms had hard little circles, which pop out - who needs to pop bubble wrap? Cutting through the mantle was hard work - you need a sharp pair of scissors or a good scalpel. Pulling back the folds of the mantle reveals the inner organs. Working out what they all are is a challenge but we think we identified the gills, the stomach and caecu,m and what we thought was the hearts. Yep, that’s right, a squid has three hearts. The eyes were exciting to dissect. It was a thrill to extract the lenses and find that they come in two parts - just like the colossal squids, and indeed all squid. The arrowsquid lens is a lot smaller - around 0.5cm across - compared with the huge orange-sized lens of the colossal. It was also really exciting to remove the beakfrom the really dense muscular tissue surrounding it. First we got the lower beak out, then the upper beak and we could see how they fit together. Then we came across the radula - it’s a bit like a tongue - with it’s amazing rows of sharp, raspy teeth. Stomach contents of our squid were examined. We could feel the crunchy bits inside, and these turned out to be fish vertebrae. Last but not least we cleaned away all the messy bits to expose the mantle - and extract the gladius, or pen. This incredible structure just glides out of the mantle and looks for all the world like it’s made of plastic. So I’m hooked on squid anatomy - there will be photos and more on the broad squid we examined next, shortly.

• A reminder: get your nominees in for the Annual Wellingtonista Awards
• Soon we're going to start publishing lists of our nominees for the AWAs (this year, it's the TAWAs because it's the Third Annual). Always after we do this, we have people go "oh but you should have nominated blah blah and this and that", so let us remind you again: if you want something to be nominated, you need to tell us. Do it now, or forever hold your peace or piece - at least until you get to vote, of course.

• I’ve been really impressed by the pace of construction of the sparkly-new bypass-of-the-bypass since I’ve got back. Apparently this started in late October, and as I walked by today the road was just about ready for sealing. The new NZTA website doesn’t seem to offer any drawings or maps of this, so for those who haven’t had the chance to see it, I took these pictures a couple of weeks ago to give you an impression of the route.

• Plum position
• As anyone who frequents Cuba St should know, Plum has been undergoing renovations for a while. The old Plum had been well-liked (as these reviews attest), but was starting to feel a little tired: perhaps somewhere between the late Krazy Lounge and Mr Bun. I expected little more than a lick of paint and some new furniture, so it's a bit of a surprise to see it in its sleek new incarnation by Alistar Cox of Matterhorn, Mojo and Mighty Mighty fame.

• A City for People
• Decades of inaction have meant house prices are out of control, while old rental properties rot out from underneath us. A whole generation of people are at risk of being forced out from the central city into new suburbs sprawling north, spending hours every day in traffic jams. We believe the Spatial Plan will allow Wellington to plan for the future so that new generations of Wellingtonians can share the city we love, and have a chance to live in a home that is affordable, accessible, healthy and warm.
