DCM Bulletin - Demand for Food and Services
- Downtown Community Ministry
- With demand for foodbank services increasing, Downtown Community Ministry (DCM) supports those in need to address the underlying issues behind their need for assistance. In the first 6 months of this year compared with the same period in 2010, demand for food parcels has increased by 27%. The number of actual parcels being given out increased from 1337 to 1703. “Sometimes people come to the foodbank once, just to help them through a tricky week or two. But, the trend is that people need more assistance for longer, which shows how tough things are out there,” says David Manuel, Community Worker at DCM.

Gridlock for Wellington? You betcha
- Iona Pannett
- Environmentalists have long argued that building more roads induces traffic so it is great to see Opus finally acknowledging this fact. Opus were the builders of the Inner City Bypass. We made this argument but unfortunately lost it in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In 2013, we finally may be starting to win the argument. Photo courtesy of stuff.co.nz

WCC Revists Earlier Assessment Not to Provide RECYCLING WHEELIE BINS to Hobson St
- Thorndon Residents Assocation
- Recycling wheelie bins were introduced across the city in 2011; but not to the properties in Hobson St, situated on the Thorndon Flat. Residents from Hobson St recently re-approached the Council regarding the earlier assessment of their street as being not suited to Council supplied recycling wheelie bins. The early assessment had indicated that Hobson St had a high volume traffic flow (similar to Tinakori Rd), and that due to the road width there was potential to block access to emergency services.

Runway extension will create significant direct economic benefit for New Zealand and cut traveling time by up to 30 percent
- Connect Wellington (Wellington Airport campaign)
- Extending Wellington Airport’s runway will deliver up to $1.75 billion in direct economic benefits to New Zealand’s economy by 2060 and slash international travelling time by up to a third according to a new report. The economic impact report undertaken by consultancy, EY, shows the direct economic benefit to the Wellington region, between 2020 and 2060, will be up to $684 million in today’s dollars. Wellington Airport Chief Executive, Steve Sanderson, says “the extension would enable the next generation wide-bodied jets to link Wellington with the rapidly expanding Asian market and to North America, growing the number of international visitors to New Zealand and increasing our ability to offer new and more accessible visitor experiences.”

A City for People
- Decades of inaction have meant house prices are out of control, while old rental properties rot out from underneath us. A whole generation of people are at risk of being forced out from the central city into new suburbs sprawling north, spending hours every day in traffic jams. We believe the Spatial Plan will allow Wellington to plan for the future so that new generations of Wellingtonians can share the city we love, and have a chance to live in a home that is affordable, accessible, healthy and warm.
