Exercise Poseidon: North Island New Zealand Response Teams Practice for a Wellington Earthquake
- Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office (WREMO)
- For the first time in over 20 years, New Zealand Response Teams (NZRTs) from across the North Island will come together in Wellington to test their ability to respond to a large scale emergency event. Exercise Poseidon is a 36-hour exercise based on a Wellington earthquake scenario. By coming to Wellington, the Response Teams will test their response capabilities and skills, their inter-team coordination and their ability to deploy to a different part of Aotearoa. The exercise will take place from the 4th to 6th of October, with most activities occurring on Saturday the 5th. All of the Response Teams will be based out of Trentham Military Camp and perform activities at different locations across the Wellington region. These include Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, Porirua Police College, Upper Hutt Community Corrections, New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport (NZCIS) the Town Hall and more.

Upset about needing Google Plus to comment on YouTube? Here’s a radical idea: don’t
- Jack Yan
- There were a few upset people in November because Google compelled everyone who wanted to comment on YouTube to have a Google Plus profile. Even a co-founder of YouTube, Jawed Karim, objected. But it’s been a long time coming. In 2011, Google combined, as is its prerogative, YouTube accounts with its own. While […]

Smoother bussing and safer biking in Newtown? Now, or maybe not for a decade!

“Helpful” Government Gives Our Public Meeting On Saturday 3 August A Publicity Boost
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- Want a good reason to attend the Save the Basin Public Meeting at St Joseph’s Church, cnr Brougham and Paterson Sts, Mt Victoria, from 4-5pm tomorrow, Saturday 3 August? Well, if our original invitation wasn’t enough, now you have a new reason: The Government has just announced that the resource consent hearing will be before an EPA Board of Inquiry hearing rather than before the Environment Court, as Wellington City Council had recommended. You can read the Minister’s announcement, and find out the names of those she has appointed to the Board of Inquiry, on Wellington Scoop. We’d rather the Minister had taken a few more months – or years – to make her decision, but now we know exactly what we’re up against. We were already going to tell you about NZTA’s flawed and sloppy flyover proposal, and what it means for you. Now we can also tell you with more confidence what the submission process will be, and how you can tell the Board, the Government, opposition political parties and the world at large that we do not want this ugly, outdated and unnecessary concrete monstrosity within a bull’s roar of the historic Basin Reserve.

A cultural asset building -v- lost inner-city green space - what do you think?
- Inner-City Wellington
- What do you think about a Fale being built on Frank Kitts Park - would it be a cultural asset or a lost part of the city’s waterfront green space? Why think about this? This is a really important decision for inner-city residents, particularly, because we don’t live in leafy suburbs with a garden, and berms and pavements at the end of our drive. And we don’t have big nearby public playing fields like many of our outer neighbourhoods.
