    • Contact Tracing and Petone FC clubroom access for the start of football
      • Contact tracing is a requirement under Level 2 and information from Capital Football has been clear that we need an accurate system for tracing close contact for players, coaches, support staff and referees (COMET) and a system for tracing casual contact which includes all close contact participants and spectators (iDMe).    Capital Football has set-up venue codes for all grounds for the use of the iDMe contact tracing system. Capital Football iDMe Ground Codes can be found on the Capital Football website under the Covid-19 information page.   iDMe creates a code for each venue where members then sign in to the venue by entering the code into their phone on the iDMe website https://idme.co.nz/.   When you go to a game, please check the ground code for your game’s location and manually sign in using the iDMe site on arrival.   The submission of the code logs the members details including a time and date stamp to a secure data base for future reference. The time and date stamp can be adjusted so you can sign in before you leave for the venue. You can also add additional people using the same device.  For more information see iDMe.    This information is held with Capital Football and/or Petone FC depending on the code for four weeks.   Coaches and managers will be required to ensure all players and close contact spectators sign in using the appropriate venue code for the ground they are playing at.    Following any announcement next week we will update you on changes relating to a move to Level one, but in the meantime please support your coaches and managers, many of whom are volunteers, as they work to comply with these.    The codes for Petone grounds and clubrooms are: Petone Memorial Park | OWXYE Petone clubrooms and gym | MVXAM Sladden Park | EASGT   Manual tracing registers All coaches can also take a manual register of players, coaching staff and close contact spectators for games and trainings. Junior/Youth coaches should email these to juniorchairman@petonefootball.org.nz    Opening of the John Bradbury Lounge – upstairs at the clubrooms The clubrooms will be open from Saturday 6 June.   We are required to meet the Government guidelines, which at present means a maximum of 100 people at a time, there will be no standing and the balcony will be closed due to physically distancing restrictions being difficult to meet.     If you are wanting to come up to the clubrooms, we will have tables of 10 available and ask that you book these through me via email.    Please also nominate one person from each table as your server to get drinks and food and consider bringing cash to assist them or agree on your own IOU system.    If opposition teams are invited up to the clubrooms, Petone team managers will need to advise them of the guidelines before they enter.

    • Tawa AFC crowned Hilton Petone Div 1 champions
      • Congratulations to Tawa AFC who were crowned Division 1 Champions on Saturday after defeating Lower Hutt 6-0 in the final of the Powerex Tournament for the Hilton Petone Cup.   The tournament started in February, but due to Covid-19 lockdown had to be postponed until last weekend.    This is the 65th year of this preseason tournament and it will certainly go down in history as one of the longest on record, according to club secretary Barry Pickering when he presented the trophies following the game.    Tawa scored twice in the first half, and despite a number of chances Lower Hutt they were denied by the Tawa goalkeeper.  Tawa extended their lead in the second half, with their final three goals coming in relatively quick succession.    This is the third win for Tawa since the introduction of tournament Divisions in 1987.    A huge thank you to all the players, supporters and officials and also to the Upper Hutt City Football Club for their ongoing support of the tournament. The date for the Division 2 final is still being confirmed.

    • Guidelines for Level 2 released
      • By now you may have seen the initial guidelines for returning to football under Alert Level 2 from NZ Football (here).    We had been hoping for more detail around these from New Zealand Football this week, however this is still in development.   We’re really keen to get back to football as soon as we can however, whilst information has outlined that trainings can start from today, until we are sure that the measures we put in place meet the requirements of NZ Football, Capital Football and the local councils in regards the use of grounds, etc. we aren’t able to confirm training and competition start dates.   What we can do however in the meantime, is be as prepared as possible on what we know. Currently the guidelines require:   Contact tracing for all players and supporters. Trainings can only be a maximum of 10 people per group (details on how many groups can train on a field at one time are still to be confirmed with councils and Capital Football). All gear and equipment must be cleaned prior to and following trainings and games. Everyone needs to wash their hands (or use hand sanitiser) before and after trainings and games Physical distancing protocols are in place off the field and further clarification is sought for during trainings. If players, coaches or support staff are unwell then they should not attend trainings or games. No competitions can take place until 30 May at the earliest.   Capital Football is working with the local councils to get access to grounds through to the end of September so we can have as much of a football season as possible. The guidelines regarding 10 person groups will be reviewed by the Government and Ministry of Health on 25 May and we’re hoping this will enable greater flexibility for trainings, etc.   We’re conscious that these requirements put additional onus of our club volunteers, including coaches and managers to keep everyone safe, which is why we are working on a plan to accommodate our 550 junior members and over 200 senior players.   Our coaches and junior grade managers will be in contact with all players and families over the coming days to reconfirm registrations and team information – if they haven’t done so already.   As soon as we can confidently confirm dates for trainings to resume, we will work with coaches to get this underway.   In the meantime, thanks for your patience and if you have any queries or concerns please feel free to contact Matt Bliss or Barry Pickering (for senior players) and Mark Allen (for junior players).   Matt Bliss Club Chairman (chairman@petonefootball.org.nz)   Barry Pickering Club Secretary (barry@petonefootball.org.nz)   Mark Allen Junior Chairman (juniorchairman@petonefootball.org.nz

    • Alert Level 2 Update
      • Following the government’s announcement on Thursday regarding the Alert Level 2 guidelines, we've been in contact with Capital Football, who are liaising with New Zealand Football to define what this means for community football.   NZ Football will be releasing more information and formal guidelines next week and these will be a starting point for clubs to begin considering.   We cannot stress enough that we absolutely share your excitement regarding the prospect of football at Level 2, when we get there. However, it's vital we get the guidelines, requirements and a process in place and right before we confirm start dates and head to the fields. So training cannot resume until these are in place.   We'll keep you informed on the process, but will first and foremost make sure the right decisions are being made in terms of safety and wellbeing for our players, coaches and their families.   Our Junior and Senior Committee members and other volunteers have been working away behind the scenes and will be meeting to work through the guidelines and how they can be implemented effectively over the next week.   Capital Football have been negotiating with local Councils and Summer sporting bodies to enable us to use the football fields available through to the end of September/early October in an attempt to get a full football season if we can start playing by early June.   If the season starts any later than this and we end up with any sort of shortened season, registration fees will be adjusted accordingly to reflect the reduced number of games.   Our senior club teams have been encouraged to keep their fitness training up - I hope all of you are doing the same and staying fit, running and moving to be ready for when the season starts again.   I want to reassure you that the club is viable thanks to our sponsors and supporters sticking by us. Although the full impact of COVID-19 isn't fully understood right now, we're aiming to have our Mitre 10 MEGA Petone Settlers Talent Centre up and running as soon as we can - the coaches are ready and waiting to get started again.

    • Thank you to our sponsors
      • As we approach a new normal for our sport and businesses in general, I would like to say a huge thank you to all of our club sponsors who continue to support us in what is a difficult time for everyone.I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage you to support these businesses as much as you can over the coming months - so they can continue to support your club. Let's all shop local! Matt BlissClub Chairman

    • Ben Feld appointed Men's Reserve team coach
      • We are pleased to announce the appointment of Ben Feld as head coach for our Men's Reserve team for 2020.   Ben is well known to Petone FC, having played senior football at the club for 5 seasons and debuting for our men’s first team in 2015.   His senior football career started at the age of 18 when he joined the Paraparaumu United men’s first team and he has played approximately 290 senior games throughout his career, scoring over 100 goals.   He also has won three Central League titles and a Chatham Cup during his time at Westerns Suburbs.   Ben says he is looking forward to the next stage of his football career and feels the transition to coaching at Petone is a natural one.   “It is great to have the club back in the Central League and I will be working to ensure the Reserve team provides a great platform for those players wanting to take the step up into Charlie and Kieran’s squad.”   Ben is focused on providing a positive footballing culture within the team for the players to thrive, so they can feel proud to wear the Petone kit every weekend. "Working towards promotion is a must and we will do this with a squad made up of experienced senior players and the talented youth at the club."

    • Petone FC gains provisional approval as Talent Development Programme (TDP) club
      • Following the launch of the Petone Settlers Talent Centre last year, we are pleased to announce that Capital Football has provisionally approved Petone FC as a Talent Development Programme (TDP) club for 2020.   The TDP applies to our youth players from 13 to 17 years of age and enables Petone to compete in the new Capital Football Leagues in U13, U15 (dual banded to include 14 and 15 year olds) and U17 in 2020.   Director of Coaching at Petone Roger Torres will lead the TDP to ensure players receive a high quality experience throughout the programme, which provides our Settlers teams in the respective TDP grades the opportunity to further grow and develop their football in line with nationally recognised standards.   The TDP will be in addition to the other programmes offered under the talent centre – such as the community skills and holiday programmes. Full details of the suite of programmes for 2020 will be advised in early January.   Club Chairman Matt Bliss says that being approved to run the TDP programme extends our existing talent centre programmes and means our club can offer different pathways for all players.   We will be in contact with parents and players in the TDP grades in the next two weeks to provide additional information about the TDP for 2020.   In the meantime, an outline of the TDP requirements can be found on the Capital Football website.

    • Petone FC seal promotion with second leg heroics
      • Petone FC have stormed into the 2020 Ultra Football Men’s Central League with a 4-1 win over Central Football challengers, Havelock North Wanderers, in the second leg of the Central League Playoffs. Having gone down with a 4-2 defeat in the first leg, Petone FC were left with a mountain to climb for the return leg if they wanted any chance of lifting the Graeme Sole Cup and sealing a place in next years Men’s Central League.   But that’s just what they did. A huge second half effort saw the home team go from 1-0 down in the first 15 minutes of play and 1-1 at the break, to netting 3 in the final 45 to finish 4-1 at the final whistle. Petone FC’s captain Michael Pickering, a standout figure for the entire season, was ecstatic with the team’s final ditch efforts.   “Pretty emotional. That was a big battle but really deserved for the whole season we put in. Bit of relief at first but just absolute pride. I’m just proud of the boys. We put in a big shift all year and then to battle back, because we had dug a hole in the first leg, to battle back and to come back from that two-goal deficit was just huge. Just a testament to the strength of our squad and our togetherness and just so proud of them. Proud is the main thing.”   Paying tribute to the teams work ethic throughout the year, Pickering acknowledged the importance of scoring two goals in the first leg to give the team a chance to hold on in the contest.   “I think the late goals were the big thing for us, I think that changed the momentum of the tie, if we came back 4 nil I don’t know if we would have been able to pull that back. But yeah, the boys came in and locked in and were just ready to make amends for not doing ourselves justice in the first leg.”   After conceding the first goal in the second leg, Bjorn Christensen slotting one home in the 11th minute for the Wanderers, Petone clawed their way back into the contest and scored three unanswered goals, (Jaga Scott-Greenfield 23’, Ethan Findley 57’, Ta Eh Doe 76’), to set up a 3-1 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. The Wanderers threw everything at the Petone FC defence, but it was Zac Watson who had the final say, sending one home in the 90th to finish the game 4-1.   “We were just digging in, it was the last 10 minutes of the season, You just got to lay it all on the line, and they threw a lot at us and we held firm, and that was the main thing we worked hard with our defence all year trying to be as solid as we can and that really saw us right in the last 10 minutes. It was tough though.”   With no better way to lift a trophy than in front of a home crowd, Pickering was excited by the chance to develop the club’s top players and take on the challenge that is the Men’s Central League.   “It's huge, absolutely huge, we’ve got a lot of good young guys who deserve to be playing Central League and it would have been tough to try and to keep them if we didn’t get up there so that’s the main thing, that they will get to go out there and perform against the best in the region now. And that’s the main thing, we want to keep developing and that’s going to be the best leap forward for them.”   With high aspirations for the 2020 season, Pickering and Petone FC will be looking to the off season to strengthen and further develop their young squad.   “To do as best as we can, you got to try and win it don’t you? That’s the main thing with any league you have got to try and win it so that’s what we’ll aim for.”   Courtesy of Capital Football

    • 2019 Junior Regulation Changes
      • In 2019, there are a few changes being made to the Junior Playing Regulations. Here is an overview of the main changes. For full details, please see the Capital Football website here (2019 regulations will be posted soon).   14/15th dual band grade Capital Football has also established a 14/15th dual banded age grade in both mixed and girls-only leagues. This will allow players born in 2004 or 2005 to play in this competition. The aim being to close the gap between 14th grade and U17s for boys or senior women’s football for girls. There is also the option for boys born in 2004 to play U17s – these games are played on a Sunday. NB: Girls choosing to play for school still have the option to play 14/15th mixed or girls only as the girls college football is played on a Wednesday.   Last year College Sport Wellington indicated they would be running a combined Year 9 and Year 10 league in 2019 on Saturdays and we are aware that a number of colleges have advised players that they need to play for school.  Players who wish to play for Petone FC still have the option if that is what they choose.   We encourage parents to talk with their children and consider what is best for them and their football experience - including coaching expertise, future development opportunities and a pathway to senior football. Obviously, our preference is for them to play for Petone FC as this offers them a range of opportunities including player development.   If you are unsure or have questions regarding playing for Petone FC, including player development pathways, please contact the Junior Management Committee: juniors@petonefootball.org.nz   First Kicks, 7th and 8th Grades Following feedback from clubs, the following changes have been made to the game lengths and playing regulations in 2019. 7th grade Festivals from 3 x 12 minutes to 4 x 12 minutes 8thgrade from 3 x 15 minutes to 4 x 12 minutes. First Kicks – 8th grades - Players can dribble in as an option for goal kicks and throw-ins.   9th-12th grades This year the New Zealand Football Retreating line regulations will be added to grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 to assist player development and encouraging teams to play out from the back.   This coaching tool has been successfully implemented in Junior Football throughout the world. It has also been used successfully by Federations in New Zealand over the past few years. The Retreating Line rule enables and encourages our young footballers to start to develop and enjoy a style of play in keeping with Worlds best practice and New Zealand Football’s playing philosophy.   The game involves playing the ball out from the back with defenders learning to control and accept the ball. Midfielders check to receive and play between the lines, while strikers learn to defend from the front and use the retreating line to make angled runs. This provides realistic player movement both on and off the ball, making it a great format for the modern game.   Be sure to check out the video explaining how the retreating line works for each grade - here
