eBike user profile: Deborah East
- Cycling in Wellington
- Deborah navigates the hills of Brooklyn on her eBike. What kind of people ride eBikes, and why? I put these questions to real estate agent and eBike user Deborah East: My e-bike has got me back into cycling after many years of inactivity, and I am slowly getting fitter and healthier because of the bike.

Real cycling progress: the Leonie Gill Pathway opens
- Cycling in Wellington
- Celia Wade-Brown cuts the ribbon opening the Pathway Although cycling in Wellington sometimes seems to be mired in “paralysis by analysis”, on Sunday 19 April it was great to join Councillors, local residents, walkers and cyclists for the opening of a real piece of cycling (and walking) infrastructure: the Leonie Gill Pathway in Kilbirnie.

Commuting by bicycle in Wellington
- Cycling in Wellington
- In the past few years the number of people I see on bikes riding from Newtown to town in the morning has literally quadrupled. Unfortunately, many of the people I see stopped at the lights are on seriously terrible bikes. I’m see rusty, too-big or too-small mountain bikes with brakes that barely work and people look unconfident and uncomfortable on their bikes. Riding the wrong bike can actually make cycling seriously not fun. Recently several of my colleagues have gotten bicycles with the intention of cycling to work. I have noticed that they too seem to have missed some items that to me are essential for bike commuting. Namely:

The new Newtown Countdown
- Cycling in Wellington
- So the new Countdown opened today in Newtown. Have you been there yet? Looks pretty fancy. It’s the reason cycling through Newtown has been even more like a video game than usual. I thought I’d check it out on my way home, as I needed a loaf of bread anyway. Luckily, I was in my car today, as the new Countdown doesn’t seem to cater for cyclists. I know it’s been discussed amongst many in the neighbourhood and the cycling community, what a nuisance the roadworks have been, how they’ve endangered pedestrians and cyclists, how they don’t seem to have thought much about congestion, etc. etc. I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised once it opened. I was not.

There’s a new kid on the block…
- Cycling in Wellington
- Opening officially today is “Bicycle Junction”; the latest addition to Wellington’s cycling scene. Brooke from Mamachari and Dan from Crank Cargo have joined forces to open a new urban cycling store in Newtown. They sell a range of bikes – refurbished imports through to Christiania trikes – plus all the accessories one could dream off… including my favourite, cup holders! And once permits have been approved they’ll also be serving coffee… can’t wait!

Bike parking in Wellington: it’s boring
- Cycling in Wellington
- It’s not that easy to design a functional, interesting bike rack that comes at a reasonable cost. The standard ‘staples’ we see around Wellington are functional but…they’re kinda boring and I have to say I don’t think they add much to the cityscape. In fact I’ll go further than that. They’re drab and plain, and I say we see them but actually we don’t.
