Advance Stop Boxes Fair?
- Cycling in Wellington
- A couple of years ago, green paint and bicycle symbols started appearing at intersections all over Wellington. These were Advance Stop Boxes (ASBs). The purpose of ASB’s is to give cyclists a place to wait ahead of the main traffic queue, making them more visible, and giving them a head start on other traffic.

Illuminating night time cycling
- Cycling in Wellington
- Lights and reflectors – do we have what it takes? As winter closes in, we all check our bike lights and reflectors to make sure we’re visible on the commute home, and following the Road Code guidelines for lighting, right? Well, maybe not, according to some research carried out by Rongotai College year 9 student, Leo Griffiths,.

Wellington Cycling Framework: progress or procrastination?
- Cycling in Wellington
- On 21 April, a rally of over 350 people who cycle demanded that WCC “get on with it” and start building cycling infrastructure. On 30 April, Council will debate the Wellington Cycling Framework, the “master plan” for developing cycling in Wellington. Is this the start of the progress that the rally demanded, or is it another exercise in procrastination?

Commuting by bicycle in Wellington
- Cycling in Wellington
- In the past few years the number of people I see on bikes riding from Newtown to town in the morning has literally quadrupled. Unfortunately, many of the people I see stopped at the lights are on seriously terrible bikes. I’m see rusty, too-big or too-small mountain bikes with brakes that barely work and people look unconfident and uncomfortable on their bikes. Riding the wrong bike can actually make cycling seriously not fun. Recently several of my colleagues have gotten bicycles with the intention of cycling to work. I have noticed that they too seem to have missed some items that to me are essential for bike commuting. Namely:

Cyclists are always running red lights….
- Cycling in Wellington
- When the car/bicycle debate emerges, it’s almost certain that at some point there’ll be a question along the lines of ”why should cyclists be respected, when they’re always running red lights”. One of my first encounters with the Red Light issue was when submitting on cycling at a Council meeting, and a Councillor (no longer […]

Bikes on Buses – you can do it now*
- Cycling in Wellington
- *If you’ve got a folding bike! Back in 2010 I was lucky enough to spend some time in Vancouver, where all buses are equipped with bike racks, and it’s very easy to combine cycling with public transport. I blogged about this at the time, looking forward to some day being able to do the same thing in Wellington. GWRC and Go Wellington are slowly working towards putting bike racks on buses.

The new Newtown Countdown
- Cycling in Wellington
- So the new Countdown opened today in Newtown. Have you been there yet? Looks pretty fancy. It’s the reason cycling through Newtown has been even more like a video game than usual. I thought I’d check it out on my way home, as I needed a loaf of bread anyway. Luckily, I was in my car today, as the new Countdown doesn’t seem to cater for cyclists. I know it’s been discussed amongst many in the neighbourhood and the cycling community, what a nuisance the roadworks have been, how they’ve endangered pedestrians and cyclists, how they don’t seem to have thought much about congestion, etc. etc. I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised once it opened. I was not.
