A trip to the Empire above Pae Kawakawa

- Last Sunday my family found ourselves unexpectedly home early from a class noho marae. So we ended up doing a cycling trip to the Empire Cinema in Island Bay to see Encanto Reo Māori. Because the cycleway connection in Berhampore is only half built, we took a short-cut from our home in Berhampore to get to the Parade. The kids were very keen, as they always are, to get their “bikes on the road.” These streets from Adelaide Road in Berhampore to the Parade in Island Bay, Tapu te Ranga, are another group of city streets built above waterways. The Pae Kawakawa stream starts near Macalister Park and runs along these roads with feeder streams in Mornington and Southgate as well.

Ain't no mountain high enough for college enviro-club

- With the school located on the city-side of Mount Victoria, students could take the shorter but narrow, noisy and fume-filled shared path through Mt Victoria tunnel, or navigate an unmaintained, steep track over the hill, scale the 2metre-high fence at the bottom, and hopefully get to school in one piece and on time. The college’s enviro-club members wanted a way for students from the eastern suburbs to get to school that was pleasant, safe, convenient, and good for the environment. Lucy and Maya, two enviro-club leaders, say: “We often walked over an extremely steep track which was completely impossible to bike up. We wanted to make it more accessible for people to bike and walk to our school so they could have a nice commute through the bush, instead of the fume-filled tunnel.”

Metlink bike rack practice point encourages cycle savviness
- Greater Wellington Regional Council
- A bus bike rack installed by Greater Wellington allows Wellingtonians to practice attaching their bikes to Metlink buses - without worrying about stopping traffic. The rack is affixed to a near-life-sized image of a Metlink bus on the Bike Space workshop, a city-council sponsored bike repair shop on Cable Street next to Waitangi Park.

Paneke Pōneke approved
- Cycle Wellington
- Yesterday, our City Councillors voted strongly in favour of approving Paneke Pōneke, a network of bike lanes that will serve most Wellington suburbs. This is a huge step forward for Wellington. During the meeting, the network grew by 19kms to cover 166kms. Within 5 years we will be riding the network, built to a transitional level, like has been achieved on Brooklyn Hill.

Being grateful for cycleways

- The last decade has seen a fierce debate about the role of cycleways in our city’s overall transport infrastructure. Those opposed present them as a luxury for a small number of people at high cost while inconveniencing others. Those supportive point out the potential cycle mode share (over 50% in some overseas cities) and the huge improvements this level of cycling can make in health, our city’s liveability, and climate change.

Matairangi Fun Run, 23 February Hataitai Velodrome, Open to the public, the Matairangi Fun Run, based on Mount Victoria, runs over the iconic Vosseler Shield course. There are two race options: the One Loop Race (5 km); or the Two Loop Race (two 5 km loops, adding up to 10 km). Each loop has approximately 190 metres of elevation. McVilly Shield Relay, 7 March, Karori Park The McVilly Shield is the first club event for the season and a great way to get to know other people in the club. This relay has teams of three people each. Everyone can participate, runners, walkers, J Team, seniors, masters and friends of the club. Just turn up and we will find you a team. You can either race it or use it as an opportunity to do some training. Each team must do ten laps of Karori Park. No individual team member can do more than four laps. But you can do the laps in any order you like. The race is randomly handicapped after the teams start. Notices Join this week and save $20 or more Join or re-join Wellington Scottish at Round the Bays this year and you get $20 off your new season of Scottish full adult membership (down from $185 to $165). We have the money – do we have the vision?

- Wellington CBD Cycleways – an achievable vision? Following hard on WCC’s approval of the Cycling Framework, and the Island Bay Cycleway, the Government announceed another $296 million to be spent across the country under the Urban Cycleways Programme, bringing the total expenditure, including contributions from the National Land Transport Fund and local government, to $333 million.
