Ain't no mountain high enough for college enviro-club
- Wellington City Council
- With the school located on the city-side of Mount Victoria, students could take the shorter but narrow, noisy and fume-filled shared path through Mt Victoria tunnel, or navigate an unmaintained, steep track over the hill, scale the 2metre-high fence at the bottom, and hopefully get to school in one piece and on time. The college’s enviro-club members wanted a way for students from the eastern suburbs to get to school that was pleasant, safe, convenient, and good for the environment. Lucy and Maya, two enviro-club leaders, say: “We often walked over an extremely steep track which was completely impossible to bike up. We wanted to make it more accessible for people to bike and walk to our school so they could have a nice commute through the bush, instead of the fume-filled tunnel.”

If you’re starting out mountain biking, Smokin is a great option for helping progress onto intermediate trails. It’s a gentle gradient with no scary drop offs on the side of the trail to distract you! This work is particularly focussed on improving the switchbacks and the flow by rebuilding berms to allow riders to safely carry more speed as they improve their skills. Thanks to Wellington City Council for funding this work as part of their commitment to Mākara Peak. Check out Smokin on Trailforks at https://www.trailforks.com/trails/smokin-20917 Help us do more great things at Mākara Peak by signing up to the Trails Wellington app or donate at https://givealittle.co.nz/org/makarapeak The track is still raw in places, so take care. Maybe even stay off it, if too wet, especially if the forecast is a bit dodgy.

Wellington Cycling Framework: progress or procrastination?
- Cycling in Wellington
- On 21 April, a rally of over 350 people who cycle demanded that WCC “get on with it” and start building cycling infrastructure. On 30 April, Council will debate the Wellington Cycling Framework, the “master plan” for developing cycling in Wellington. Is this the start of the progress that the rally demanded, or is it another exercise in procrastination?
