Hutt art on it's way to Minoh
- Hutt Minoh House Friendship Trust
- <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Minoh and Lower Hutt are to exchange artworks for reciprocal exhibitions in each city this year and next. This followed an introduction when Minoh Art Association President and fellow members were in Lower Hutt in February 2015 to celebrate the 20 year sister city relationship between the two cities. It was agreed to exchange 25 artworks between the two creative organisations to grow further exchange between Lower Hutt and Minoh. Final steps were made in March to complete the collection of 25 artworks donated by Hutt Art Centre members to be sent to Minoh City, Japan. David Balm and Iris Kauffeld, Gallery Manager; photographed above, catalogued and packed the artworks for transportation in time for the 60th anniversary celebrations of Minoh City in June 2016. The Hutt Minoh Friendship Trust supported the project with a grant to help transport the artworks to Japan. The catalogue of works will be available shortly to be viewed at Hutt Art Centre. The Minoh Art Association are planning to send a reciprocal exhibition to Lower Hutt to be shown at the Hutt Art Centre in April 2017. BY DAVID BALM, PRESIDENT, HUTT ART SOCIETY

School Boards of Trustees are a central part of New Zealand’s schools. Together the Board and Principal form the leadership team of the school. The Board is a governance body, focussing on the vision and strategic direction of the school while the Principal leads the management of the school, making the operational decisions to implement strategy. Being a school trustee is an important role that needs people with a range of skills and experiences and in order that the Board reflects our community, ideally we want a good balance of gender, ethnicity and skills. At Wellington High School, the Board of Trustees work to promote the culture and ethos of Wellington High School. We focus on student achievement and support educational opportunities for all students in our school. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Board of Trustees you should be prepared to make a contribution to the work of the Board, to act as part of a governance team, have the skills to ask the right questions and be prepared to participate in making decisions. Specific skills are not a requirement, however governance experience, financial management and legal skills are useful. We would like to really encourage people to put their names forward to be nominated for election to our school board. For further details about the process have a look at the Board of Trustees Newsletter

Let's get Wellington talking - and moving
- Greater Wellington Regional Council
- Talking is something Wellingtonians thrive on and the region’s transport leaders want people to do just that over the next few weeks about the Capital City – how they find getting around and through it and what they love most about how Wellington looks, feels and functions.

NZTA Refuses To Publicly Rule Out A Future Basin Reserve Flyover
- Save the Basin Reserve!
- At the post-Basin flyover engagement process launch last night, I asked Jim Bentley of Let’s Get Welly Moving (the new brand of the Ngauranga to Airport Governance Group, the joint NZTA/Greater Wellington/WCC body) whether a Basin Reserve flyover was absolutely off the table as an option.

Poisonous Plants of the Sanctuary
- Zealandia
- Do you know your tutu from your supplejack? You’d be wise not to eat any asparagus-like shoots in the bush if you’re not sure! In 2014 tramper Matthew Pike found this out the hard way after adding what he thought was a supplejack sapling to his boil-up, only to find – when he woke up in hospital – that he’d seasoned his dinner with the notorious tutu: a poisonous plant full of the neurotoxin tutin. Matthew’s reaction was so severe that his convulsions dislocated his shoulder; he was lucky to survive. Tutu is native to New Zealand, and some of our eight species are endemic (found nowhere else in the world). At ZEALANDIA, tree tutu (Coriaria arborea) can be seen in front of the Shag Lookout, on the banks alongside the mine, and near the pontoon gate to the Takahē Lawn. Tutu fruit is eaten by many of our bird species with no ill effects, but is unsafe for mammals unless the tiny seeds have been filtered out. ‘Toot’ poisoning was once a well-known cause of stock loss, in lowland areas where cattle were allowed to wander. Other historical casualties include two elephants in 1957, who browsed on tutu berries at the side of the road as the circus drove from town to town. Traditionally, Māori fermented tutu fruit to make wine, having strained out the seeds, and also mixed tutu juice with seaweed to make a sweet jelly. Following the recipe was a life or death matter when it came to tutu puddings – four French sailors died in the 1830s after making their own version of tutu berry surprise. Tutu was also used as a tattoo ink, and has medicinal uses in Rongoā Māori as a treatment for arthritis, skin rashes, and gout. While the birds and insects of New Zealand are pleasingly benign, we do have a surprisingly large number of poisonous plants. Tutu is not the only one found within ZEALANDIA’s fence, but it is the most notorious. If you’re curious to learn more, you can stop one of our friendly roaming guides for information, book a tour, or join a walk and talk. The last word goes to A. A. Gower, a Patea chemist, who made a patent medicine from the root of tutu in 1892. ‘Ma-uru’ was a cure for neuralgia, relieved eyestrain, and could cure ‘ear ache, headache, rheumatic pains, sprains. And all pain.’ A little something for your dislocated shoulder maybe? Written by Liz Hibbs. Photos by Janice McKenna.
