      • he City Gallery has had its doors closed since last October for a whopping four million dollar upgrade... an upgrade that included a touch of seismic strengthening and a fancy-dancy new two-storey expansion... but those doors are set to fly-open next weekend as they host one hell of a come-back party in the Civic Square! • Compassionate Charitable Coffee
      • Yip. We all heard about it. Wellington's finest kitsch-1940's-styled-Lyall-Bay-based Maranui Surf Life Saving Club and Cafe was a fiery inferno in the early hours of Saturday morning last weekend. Initially, charred like a lava rock, it looked doubtful whether this prominent seaside haven would be restored, BUT with overwhelming support from Wellington City Council, Wellington businesses and the Wellington community at large it will be.

    • South Coast Gallery on Cuba - 29 June, 169 Cuba Street
      • It’s almost a blink-and-you’ll miss it affair. Hidden away in a little nook down Cuba Street, is the inner-city child of Island Bays finest art space - South Coast Gallery on Cuba. The Island Bay version of the gallery was first established in 2006, a neat little place to view and pick up some local or international artworks - after a little relax time on the beach that is. The Bay version is view by appointment, so it’s kinda nice to just be able to amble in and out of the Cuba premises whilst on the way to/from work or play.

      • I recall the first time I spotted the haunting portraits of Wellington-based artist, Brad Williams / Slope. It was a couple of years ago at the opening of an Affordable Art Show and they were causing quite the fuss. Since then I have noticed his distinctive works adorning the walls of many Wellington galleries, cafes and bars. So I was uber-stoked when I learnt he was exhibiting at Manky Chops this month.

      • Okay, so here’s a first for texture (I think). I’m reviewing a hotel. And guess what? It’s freakin’ cool baby. Ohtel is situated on the prime real estate of Wellington’s Oriental Parade. It’s a fairly compact building, with an understated yet stylish exterior. The theme throughout the hotel is 50’s urban chic.

    • BIG BANGS!
      • It's time to celebrate that time when the crazy anarchist tried to blow up British parliament again. The Pelorus Trust Sky Show will be lighting Wellington skies on Wednesday night for Guy Fawkes.  Prepared by world-renowned fireworks maestro Robert McDermott, the show will start at 9pm and will run for about 15 minutes to a soundtrack broadcast on Classic Hits and ZM, with fireworks set off around the harbour. Around 100,000 spectators are expected to show up for the big bangs, so get there early to grab a good spot, or head to the hills for the best views. Also, to get into the party vide, before the fireworks, check out The Ride Of Your Life Spectacle, a three-hour show featuring live music from the Beatles Review and the Beat Girls at Frank Kitts park. This show will also have choreographed water-sports performances from jet-skiers, wake-boarders, Thunder Cats and more. It's to raise money for the Wellington Free Ambulance, so donate a gold coin. This show starts at 6pm. And don't forget that 24-hour liquor ban that applies in the central city area, Oriental Bay and on the Mt Victoria summit, so no sneaky beers. -Stacey

    • Local Hip-Hop about to go Ballistic
      • It’s time to embrace the future of hip-hop – starting with Wellingtons own prodigy of rhyme-time, that man we call ‘Flowz.’  This local master of the mike can put many overseas lyricists to shame, which you can witness for yourself at his show, The Jam Sessions, at bar Bodega on Friday the 24th of October. Flowz (Whose real name is Fiso Siliota) will be accompanied by the USOS, along with guest stars of a weighty caliber, including hip-hop royalty in Dam Native,  DJ CXL (Ill Semantics), the Footsouljahs, Perceieve, Wanderers, Delta Sierra, F4, plus DJ Raw, Kerb1 & ninjasteps in the DJs cockpit.    Straight outta Lyall Bay, Flowz is definitely one rising MC to be respected.  You add in the power of Dam Native plus the skills of CXL and Raw, and boy, you have one hell of a fiery gig just waiting to go up in smoke. This show will also wet the appetites of those awaiting hip-hop Aotearoa – a celebration in respect of Kaupapa Maori Music Week - which will be shaking the Bodges walls on Thursday the 30th of Oct.  This one will be a terrific showcase of the young go-getters in Kiwi hip-hop, so make sure you are amped, primed and pumped after checking out Flowz and company the week before. Oh, and you can also win tickets to Flowz right here on Texture as well. For the rest of you it’s just $20 for tickets to ‘The Jam Sessions,’ which are on sale now from the Wakefield Hotel and Real Groovy on Cuba Street. -Darren
