Texture and Cuba Street

Just Texture Just Cuba Street
    • Exposing the Good Karma Project
      • Wellington’s free street publication, Exposure Lifestyles, is set to embark on an odyssey to the other side of the world, and a place about as far from the cafes & galleries of Cuba Street as you could imagine – Mae Sot in Thailand.

    • South Coast Gallery on Cuba - 29 June, 169 Cuba Street
      • It’s almost a blink-and-you’ll miss it affair. Hidden away in a little nook down Cuba Street, is the inner-city child of Island Bays finest art space - South Coast Gallery on Cuba. The Island Bay version of the gallery was first established in 2006, a neat little place to view and pick up some local or international artworks - after a little relax time on the beach that is. The Bay version is view by appointment, so it’s kinda nice to just be able to amble in and out of the Cuba premises whilst on the way to/from work or play.

    • Slope 2009 – 12 June, Manky Chops Gallery
      • I recall the first time I spotted the haunting portraits of Wellington-based artist, Brad Williams / Slope. It was a couple of years ago at the opening of an Affordable Art Show and they were causing quite the fuss. Since then I have noticed his distinctive works adorning the walls of many Wellington galleries, cafes and bars. So I was uber-stoked when I learnt he was exhibiting at Manky Chops this month.

    • Move over Dorothy Patisserie…
      • Dorothy Patisserie started the ball rolling when it ceased serving its delicious sweet treats and smooth hot beverages after eighty years in the business. This was apparently due to their rent sky-rocketing a whooping $67,000 in six years… …THEN… …Many concerned Wellington residents were shocked and outraged by the news that the Courtney Place institution Espressoholic was given a mere month to relocate.

      • Wondering what to do when the Cuba Street Carnival is done and dusted?  Look no further than the new kid on the entertainment block – Mount Victoria’s inaugural Inner City Festival, coming in two weeks time on the 28th of February. The Festival’s theme is one of sustainability and organic living, with one and all having a great time, whilst paying respect to the environment we sometimes

    • Kreüzberg Summer Café! Hawt!
      • So… Cuba Street has a new place to nab a fantastic coffee and, by all means, it’s a little unconventional. The Kreüzberg Summer Café is a backyard-style café (so an established caravan parked in an old car park set amongst brightly coloured picnic tables) at the top of Cuba Street… like the very top… like pretty much on Webb Street… The café is named after a district in Berlin, which is renowned fo

    • Local Hip-Hop about to go Ballistic
      • It’s time to embrace the future of hip-hop – starting with Wellingtons own prodigy of rhyme-time, that man we call ‘Flowz.’  This local master of the mike can put many overseas lyricists to shame, which you can witness for yourself at his show, The Jam Sessions, at bar Bodega on Friday the 24th of October. Flowz (Whose real name is Fiso Siliota) will be accompanied by the USOS, along with guest stars of a weighty caliber, including hip-hop royalty in Dam Native,  DJ CXL (Ill Semantics), the Footsouljahs, Perceieve, Wanderers, Delta Sierra, F4, plus DJ Raw, Kerb1 & ninjasteps in the DJs cockpit.    Straight outta Lyall Bay, Flowz is definitely one rising MC to be respected.  You add in the power of Dam Native plus the skills of CXL and Raw, and boy, you have one hell of a fiery gig just waiting to go up in smoke. This show will also wet the appetites of those awaiting hip-hop Aotearoa – a celebration in respect of Kaupapa Maori Music Week - which will be shaking the Bodges walls on Thursday the 30th of Oct.  This one will be a terrific showcase of the young go-getters in Kiwi hip-hop, so make sure you are amped, primed and pumped after checking out Flowz and company the week before. Oh, and you can also win tickets to Flowz right here on Texture as well. For the rest of you it’s just $20 for tickets to ‘The Jam Sessions,’ which are on sale now from the Wakefield Hotel and Real Groovy on Cuba Street. -Darren

    • Deck You Out...
      • Manky Chops are at it again. And this time they’ve got downstairs neighbors, ALC clothing, in on the act. Cuba’s most fantastic underground art gallery and its most full-on clothing store have combined to bring the masses an art show with a difference. ‘Decked out,’ is an exhibition of skateboard canvases, which have been ‘art-ed up’ to display the talents of a range of artistic personalities.

    • Bake sale!
      • Q What could be better than sweet home-made baking on a Saturday morning? A- Knowing that by purchasing it, you are helping out the Women's Refuge! Yes, that group of filthy rich philanthropists, The New Money Country Club are combining their collective baking powers to entice Wellingtonians with sweet cakes, cupcakes, cookies and muffins.

    • knitted hot-dogs and bunny quilts
      • Even though this winter hasn't been as harsh as Wellington winters of past, keeping warm still should be a number one priority. Sometimes, this means forgoing cocktails for tim-tams and movies under a soft, comforting quilted blanket (maybe with bunnies on it?), but if you are anything like me usually you can't keep still and are not very good at just relaxing- unless it's a terrible hangover. That's why I'm thinking of taking up knitting so movies, blankets and indulgent biscuits are a little justified. Maybe knitting and its sweet purity will even stop my drinking, either way today I found a new store that may inspire this possible new pastime of mine.

    • Fashionable Princesses
      • With Wellington now having its own Paper Bag Princess, there is even less reason to visit Auckland. The second hand clothing store has been hiding down in the corner of Left Bank Arcade for a while now, and rumour on the street is that more and more people are discovering its goodness.

    • Slowboat essential 50
      • Slowboat records is an absolute Cuba Street institution. I don't actually know how long it has been there, but I can't ever remember it not existing so as far as I know its old. In a good way. Everytime I go past I check out the awesome cardboard cut-out elvis in the window and smile to myself. In an ever changing Cuba Street, Slowboat has been the one constant.
