    • New Bars and Cafes keep on Coming
      • “Because you can’t, you won’t, and you don’t stop” is the immortal opening line from a Beastie Boy’s song. It also happens to be the best way to sum up Wellington’s fast-growing bar scene of recent times.

    • Betty's - 3 October, 32 Blair Street
      • There seemed to be a big ol’ hype machine at work before Betty’s even opened to the public. I guess this could be expected, mostly due to the fact that new bars have been a little thin on the ground in recent times (but boy has that changed, with more rumoured to be on the way for summer).

    • The Library - 03 October, Level 1, 53 Courtenay Place
      • God I used to love Cabaret. It was an impressive cocktail bar-slash-music venue that really complimented its neighbouring establishments of Chow and Motel. 2009 brings something different, with the library stepping into Cabaret’s luxurious bar space. My first thought when hearing about the new venue was “what’s with the name?” but in the face of such handsomely titled places as “El Horno” and “Sports Cafe” I was willing to give The Library a pass on this one.

    • Compassionate Charitable Coffee
      • Yip. We all heard about it. Wellington's finest kitsch-1940's-styled-Lyall-Bay-based Maranui Surf Life Saving Club and Cafe was a fiery inferno in the early hours of Saturday morning last weekend. Initially, charred like a lava rock, it looked doubtful whether this prominent seaside haven would be restored, BUT with overwhelming support from Wellington City Council, Wellington businesses and the Wellington community at large it will be.

    • Motel and Matterhorn rank amongst best in the world
      • If you are looking for the best bars in the world then you don’t have to go very far. That’s because Australian Bartender Magazine has named Wellington's Matterhorn and Motel bar, amongst the top twenty drinking establishments in the Asia-Pacific region for 2009. This is the third time that the Australian Bartender Mag has conducted their annual survey of the world’s finest nightspots.

    • Happy to change hands
      • Happy Bar always likes a surprise.  And that attitude hasn’t changed, with the established ‘Experimental’ music venue moving into the capable hands of new owners, Deborah Resnick and Sam Macleod. The more out there shows will be limited to one night a week, with Tuesday’s becoming “Experimental Tuesday's”, continuing the Happy tradition of weird and wonderful performances.

    • Move over Dorothy Patisserie…
      • Dorothy Patisserie started the ball rolling when it ceased serving its delicious sweet treats and smooth hot beverages after eighty years in the business. This was apparently due to their rent sky-rocketing a whooping $67,000 in six years… …THEN… …Many concerned Wellington residents were shocked and outraged by the news that the Courtney Place institution Espressoholic was given a mere month to relocate.

    • Valve has closed it's doors.
      • Since late November, internet forums have been full of speculation, some grief and lots of "where will we go now" over the news of Valve Bar unexpectedly closing it's doors. Valve, on Vivian Street, was notorious in Wellington for being the bar that bands started out at, it avidly supported local bands and the underground, with punk and metal being the staple genres you would hear coming ou

    • A designer walks into a bar...
      • Poor Auckland. Even though there are way more bars there than in Wellington, we just keep beating them in the bar awards. This year the Matterhorn won Best Casual Dining - Metropolitan, at the Cuisine NZ Restaurant of the Year 2008 Awards as well as the NZ Bar of the Year Award for the third year in a row. At the same awards, Matterhorn's Ricki Carter was named New Zealand's top bar manager of the year, Motel as the cocktail bar of the year and it was revealed that the Mighty Mighty offers the best music in New Zealand. But wait there's more. The latest accolades for Wellington bars come from the New Zealand BeST Design Awards, where once again, Wellington dominated. Three major awards were won in the hospitality design section by some of Wellington's finest nightspots at the Awards Ceremony held in Auckland last Saturday. Good Luck Bar received a Gold Award, Matterhorn a Silver Award and Mighty Mighty picked up a Bronze Award, all thanks to Alastair Cox, the designer of all three winning interiors. The BeST Design Awards are a national award programme of the Designers Institute of New Zealand, recognising New Zealand's best graphic, product and spatial design. -Stacey

    • Matterhorn comes out on top!
      • It's official. Matterhorn is the best restaurant/bar to eat and drink at! They have just won the Supreme Award and the Best Casual Dining - Metropolitain, at the Cuisine NZ Restaurant of the Year 2008 Awards! And of course they also won the NZ Bar of the Year Award (third year in a row)!

    • Where is the best dance-floor in Wellington?
      • No, I'm not talking about the light up squares at Boogie Wonderland, but the feel, the vibe, the Mabo of Welli's best clubs. Yes, the physical aspects of the space come into play, but the way that people enjoy the dance-floor is more important. Now of course, this is a subjective issue, I won't actually be declaring a winner at the end, more just debating the various merits and debits of dance-floors around Wellington.

    • Parade Cafe on its way out
      • Over the next two years, take some time to appreciate Wellingtons Parade Café - because after that it will be no more. The lease for the cafes two buildings is up in 2010, and it is looking highly likely that they will be demolished to make way for a proposed apartment development, depending upon council approval.

    • Here come the 2008 NZ Bar Awards!
      • The premier bars throughout Aotearoa are about to do battle for top honours at the 2008 New Zealand Bar Awards. The final will be held on Wednesday 6th of August at Auckland’s Hilton Hotel. Last year Matterhorn took out the award for best bar, and they are again favourites to take out number one spot in a bid for national domination of NZ's burgeoning bar scene. In fact, Wellington establishments have a strong representation across many of the categories, not to mention a ton of Wellingtonians putting up their hand for bartender of the year as well.

    • Duke Carvell's - A new, cosy and tucked away bar
      • It's easy to get a bit tired of going to the same old bars in the 'grid' of central Wellington. You know, sometimes you just want to have a quiet drink where you won't bump into everyone you know. Times like that, you need somewhere that's tucked away and a bit intimate. For this, Duke Carvell's, the new bar on Swan Lane where Imbibe used to be, is the ideal joint to visit.

    • A brand new noodle
      • Like ships passing in the night, my sister Lulu returned from London in 1993 just as I was departing on my own pilgrimage to the Old Country. Amongst a raft of useful advice, she insisted I eat at Wagamama - a stylish Japanese noodle shop in Covent Garden. And so I did. And having left Wellingtown just as laksa was making a break for it out of pokey Asian diners, I was wowed by Wagamama's sleek lines, its slick efficiency, and its mammoth bowls of clean, steaming noodles - at only a few bob a pop. It shone like a beacon out of the greasy sea of affordable London eateries. Now here we are with our own brand new Wagamama.

    • Down but not out
      • Late last year, having only been open since the 1st of June, Taranaki St gem Cubita was closed by a fire (which also took out Burger Fuel). At the time, reports indicated it might not reopen due to a bit of an ambiguous insurance situation but I am pleased to tell you that Cubita is now ready for business, nearly four months after it first closed.
