    • Lunch and a Movie for 8 Dollars!
      • Those rather smart cinemaphiles down at New Zealand's Film Archive have come up with a real doozy of an idea. It's called 'Soup & a Seat', where-upon the weary and ravenous film-lover can relax with a movie and a cup of piping-hot homemade soup, for just $8.

The event kicks off with Jane Campion’s ‘Bright Star’, and festival goers are to be the first in the world to view the New Zealand born directors new efforts. The many and varied films on offer range from animation, to documentary and the ‘incredibly strange’; and from the up-and-coming, to the directors whom

    • Hold Still - 24 June, Film Archive
      • The new sound and video installation ‘Hold Still’ opened to much flurry and intrigue on Wednesday evening. The work which is situated in the Film Archive’s Mediagallery space is both poignant and charming; as artist Rachel Shearer does an extraordinary job at showcasing the work of amateur female film-makers during the 1930’s in New Zealand.

    • The Mighty Civic – 17 June, Film Archive
      • The 1988 film was an hour of pure nostalgia, delight, sorrow and amusement. Everyone is familiar with the mighty Auckland Civic Theatre, but not many (including myself) are familiar with its back-story and sprawling history. Until, that is last Wednesday.

    • World Cinema Showcase Opens on Thursday...
      • The World Cinema Showcase is nice lead-up of sorts to the New Zealand International Film Festival and it opens this Thursday. Committed to compiling a diverse and engaging programme of international arthouse films, the selection this year looks as strong as ever. John Crowley's galvanising realist drama Boy A impressed me immensely last year in the NZIFF, though I felt that it undeservedly fell un

    • Filmmaking Insights - An Evening With Sima Urale
      • Filmmaker Sima Urale is one of the best filmmakers of her generation presently working in New Zealand. One of the hardest things for a filmmaker to master is not only to tell a good story, but to translate it successfully via moving images. Urale's films which include the excellent shorts Still Life, Coffee and Alah and O Tamati (which won the Leone d'Argento or Silver Lion Award in Venice) are fi

    • Special Screenings of Kiwi Classic Goodbye Pork Pie on Friday and Saturday
      • Ask people what their favourite New Zealand film is, and quite often, they'll say Goodbye Pork Pie, Geoff Murphy's classic 1981 road film. You could say that the main character of the film is a car - the zippy yellow mini which has since become an instantly recognisable Kiwi icon. And if you haven't seen it (or want to see it again!) the Film Archive will be screening it over two nights this Friday

    • It's time to book your tickets..
      • Every year when the Wellington Film Festival rolls around, I do the same stupid thing. I read the programme, circle what I want to see, and then forget about it until it's too late, the films I want to see are sold out or I've run out of money to see them. Well, this year I will be trying my hardest to get organised enough to see my picks of the bunch!

    • Human Rights Film Festival 2008
      • Having spent many years working for the Paramount theatre I have been lucky enough to see an overwhelming number of incredible films, but none have affected me more than the films I have been privileged enough to see courtesy of the Human Rights Film Festival. Their programme continues to get stronger with every year, and this year also celebrates the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
