    Oh My God - It's Division 3

    • Wellington Indoor Sports today announced that Zephyr Rovers were to go into Division 3 after John Cao (pictured) apparently had a word with the centre Manager. "It has always been our vision to be the best team in Wellington by 30 June 2030" said Rover Manager Steve Hall "but this is going a bit faster than I anticipated, we're already over half way there with twenty three years or so to spare".

    • Wellington rugby fans will be welcoming the Irish rugby team to the capital for the first time in 16 years when the two nations meet at Westpac Stadium on June 7, kick off 7.35pm.  Ireland were last in New Zealand in 2006 for a two test series, but this will also be the first time the men from the Emerald Isle have played Test Rugby in Wellington since 1992 at Athletic Park.

Kia ora koutou During the last two months there has been some great local orienteering. A big thanks to Red Kiwis for an excellent Pokapū regional champs weekend over Labour weekend. This was really well organised, on great maps, and with excellent course setting. I made a big muck up of the night event but totally loved it. Our club members were right behind Red Kiwis too—a big thank you to Gillian and Lizzie Ingham, as well as to Rob Collier for being there every day to help run the finish. Our Wednesday night events have started up and are highly recommended. Our first offering was in Seatoun, planned by Demelza Robinson and controlled by Luis Slyfied. Our Wednesday events are great for everyone, with start times between 6-7pm, and two or three short courses that hopefully don’t leave you at sixes and sevens! Great fun for everyone! About a month ago, friends and I were in Queensland at the Australian Orienteering Championships and associated events—of which there were 7 events in 9 days. We thoroughly enjoyed the orienteering and the camaraderie of staying together in a shared house during that week away. If you’re lucky enough to be heading overseas and get the opportunity to try orienteering in totally foreign terrain and conditions then I thoroughly recommend the experience. One thing I’d like to see next year is a growing and active membership. Membership brings rewards—being more involved in the sport, attending training events, a sense of belonging and making new friends. To that end, come to our AGM and social on Saturday 6 December, which is great chance to connect with others in your sport. And, next year, don’t just tell your friends about orienteering—make it your resolution to bring em’ along! We’ll start with a fun event at 4pm, followed by the meeting at 5pm. The AGM will include the President and Treasurer’s report, and an overview of the year. We will also confirm the draft minutes for 2024. This year we also passed a new Constitution and will need to elect a smaller Committee for 2026: President Treasurer 3 other officers. The Secretary will be appointed from within the Committee. The Committee will also be supported by working parties reporting into the Committee, but these are not elected roles. This is a bit of change, and we’re open to hearing what working groups you think would be useful and may like to be part of going forward. If you would like to stand for the Committee, or have any queries, please contact Lachlan McKenzie, Secretary at secretary@wellingtonorienteering.org.nz This is a chance to celebrate the year, discuss plans, and enjoy time together and great food! Originally held in winter, the “Classic” is an endurance event that is both physically and mentally demanding. A rogaine is also offered as part of the Classic. The event was founded by the Wairarapa Orienteering Club, and the M40 class incorporates the Wayne Cretney Memorial in memory of Wayne Cretney, a Wairarapa member tragically killed in a work accident in 1987.     Crustacean celebrities of Aotearoa New Zealand on display at Te Papa

    • Crabs, shrimps, lobsters, barnacles, slaters and other crustaceans are the stars of a new mini exhibition presented by NIWA and Te Papa. Opening 22 May, Mawhiti Tino Rawe | Clever Crustaceans is a playful exploration of the bizarre and diverse world of five marine crustaceans. They can change their shape, circle the globe, and maybe even cure cancer – crustaceans are the unsung heroes of the sea. NIWA scientists Rachael Peart and Kareen Schnabel worked with Te Papa experts to deliver this mini exhibition that showcases the importance and special capabilities of the ‘insects of the sea’.

    • So after an intensely frustrating day for local politics anoraks, as every other city got to find out who its mayor was going to be, the preliminary Wellington results have been announced, and we have… …no winner? With all the other candidates knocked out and their preferences redistributed (this might be a good time to brush up on how STV works if you’ve forgotten) Kerry Prendergast is ahead of Celia Wade-Brown, 24,468 votes to 24,428. Yes, that’s a 40-vote gap. And what’s more—all the votes haven’t actually been counted yet. Say what? Update: The preliminary results are now up on elections2010.co.nz and the City Council website. And we’ve added a roundup of the council results down the bottom. What are the uncounted votes? There appear to be about 900 special votes still to be counted. We don’t have an exact number. Because the third-placed candidate, Jack Yan, is far behind the top two, all that matters is whether the special voters ranked Kerry or Celia higher. Additionally, votes that are postmarked today will be counted when they arrive. Nobody knows how many of these there are. So who’s going to win? Celia needs to get slightly more than half of the uncounted votes (about 55%, or 491, if there are 900 of them) to win. Otherwise, Kerry wins. Conventional wisdom says special votes usually favour ‘the left’. We’re sending a minion to research how the special votes broke in the last couple of elections and will post about that when we know. When will we find out who won? The only media coverage we’ve seen of this is a tweet from @NZStuff saying the election “may not be decided until Wednesday”. Update: The Dom Post is now reporting that special vote counting will begin on Monday. But the City Council Twitter feed said Kerry had been re-elected! Yes, and that’s very naughty of them. (Addendum: see this comment thread.) How many people voted? According to the Council website, 44,465 people had voted as of Thursday, about 33% turnout. That’s not counting however many more votes turned up on Friday and Saturday, but still—shame on the other two-thirds of you. Update: It appears the last two days of voting brought turnout up to about 40%. What about the Council? According to the preliminary results… Eastern Ward: Leonie Gill and Ray Ahipene-Mercer have been re-elected. Simon “Swampy” Marsh has knocked off Rob Goulden. Lambton Ward: Ian McKinnon and Iona Pannett have been re-elected. Stephanie Cook appears to have been re-elected as well, but she didn’t make it past Marcus Ganley until everyone else was eliminated, and if there are enough specials there’s an outside chance Ganley could sneak past her. Michael Fowler, if you’re wondering, came fifth behind Ganley. Northern Ward: Hayley Wain is out, pushed into fifth place behind Gareth no-not-that-one Morgan and newcomer Justin Lester, who topped the poll. Helene Ritchie and Ngaire Best have been re-elected. Onslow-Western Ward: Andy Foster, Jo Coughlan, and John Morrison have all been re-elected. Southern Ward: Bryan Pepperell has been re-elected. Paul Eagle has taken Celia Wade-Brown’s vacated seat.

• • Future of Metlink On Demand to be decided by Greater Wellington

    • The next steps for Metlink’s ‘On Demand’ public transport trial will be decided at a Greater Wellington Transport Committee meeting on 22 June. Metlink On Demand is a flexible, shared transport solution that has been trialling in Tawa and Grenada North since May 2022. Passengers use an app to request pick up and drop off at locations across the suburbs. To date the service has been well received by the community with 40,000+ trips and overall customer satisfaction measured at 96%.

    • Winter’s always a busy period at any hospital, and June 2009 was especially busy with the arrival of the “Swine Flu” pandemic adding further stresses and strains. The arrival of “Novel A H1N1” (to give the swine flu its proper name) required all hospital staff to rapidly adapt to the changing environment. Otago University School of Medicine photographer Lousie Goossens spent some time looking at the various roles C&C DHB staff played during the early stages of the swine flu pandemic.

The project risks substantial financial out lay in return for limited productivity gains.

    • Although not an overly frequent frequenter to the suburbs, there is a certain feeling about being by the beach that we quite like: if we weren’t an urban blog, we’d be a seaside blog. Lyall Bay, home of Wellington’s best surf break, and a special spot for windsurfing and kite boarding, is a virtual paradise right on the edge of the capital city. At the edge of the Cook Straight, at times civilised, at other times wild beyond redemption, Lyall Bay is a fantastic place to be in the ‘burbs. In short, the Fish liked to dine at the Maranui Cafe.

    • The little side street at the Taranaki Street end of Courtenay Place has been due for big changes for a while, and now it all looks like it's finally happening. In June, work will start on closing the street and turning it into a pocket park: more details will be released by the council in a couple of weeks. Also, the long-abandoned toilet block which has been the subject of various suggestions over the years, will undergo a more predictable but nonetheless welcome transformation.

What’s happening? The prefabs are here! In a much anticipated event, four prefab classrooms were lowered in to place on the school field last weekend. These four classrooms will provide more space on campus and will be important as the school moves through the master planning process. There is still some work to do onsite and we anticipate that they will be in use from the first day of Term 3. Outdoor Education This week Year 11 students have been out on the water to Makaro (Ward Island). Students participated in a beach clean up and spent time looking at the habitats of Little Blue Penguins. The fact that students were able to observe seals and penguins on the rocks and in the water was a real bonus.   Art      This week we share stunning landscapes painted by Ms Peters’ Year 10 Art class.      Year 13 took advantage of the winter sun and fine colours to work outdoors. Āwhina Āwhina is our Thursday homework club which takes place in the Library every week. This popular, supportive environment is one where students can come for support with assignments and homework, thanks to the dedicated teachers who regularly give up their time after school each week. MyKindo As recently reported, the cafeteria has adopted the mykindo app to facilitate easy pre-order and contactless payment for food. To support those using the mykindo app, the attached guide provides information on the different methods you can use to top up your account.   Achievements  NZ Online Mathematical Olympiad Well done to Ruby Nicolson and Lias Morris who achieved marks which placed them in the top 10 in the NZ Online Mathematical Olympiad. Ruby and Lias are both in year 9. From the careers desk Virtual Careers Expo — 18-19 June Even in unusual times like these, our students still have important decisions to make about their futures. Next week, a number of NZ’s top providers come together to give you a Careers’ Expo experience, virtually! Attendees will have full access to the Virtual Expo Hall, where you can interact with exhibitors, ask questions, and access useful resources that will help you choose the right path. Students only need to register once to be able to access the expo across the 2 days (and with you during the evening on Thursday night). They can access the expo at any time. We’re kicking things off this Wednesday with our afterwork sprints, part of our College Sport Wellington (CSW) Series, which will be followed by forest and farm orienteering in March. Although CSW events are aimed at getting school students orienteering, don’t be put off by the name—courses are open to everyone, and we’d love to see you there. A big thank you to our course planner, Ali Power, and our controller, Sarah O’Sullivan, for knocking our first sprint into shape at Whitireia Campus in Porirua. AGM highlights Congratulations to Morag McLellan, who took out the Endeavour Cup for development, and to Helen Hughes for receiving the Fortune Cup for outstanding service to the club! Beverley Holder was welcomed as the new President of Orienteering Wellington, taking over from Paul Teesdale-Spittle, who has dedicated many years to leading the club. Beverley has been deeply involved, most recently helping steer a successful Oceania organising committee. Draft minutes from the AGM 2024 will soon be available on the website Morag McLellan Helen Hughes Wellington makes waves at Oceania Oceania was a fantastic event, with over 700 orienteers from both sides of the Tasman and further enjoying beautiful courses at Massey University (sprint) and Santoft forest maps of Koitiata (middle), Knottingly (long), and Parewanui (relay). Orienteering Wellington members achieved some impressive results, especially Lizzie Ingham, who reigned supreme by taking first in Women’s 21E for the Sprint, Middle, and Long events. Jake McLellan also shone with a second place in M20E Sprint and Long courses, and both he and Rachel Baker were part of the New Zealand junior teams that won their Trans-Tasman relay competitions. Orienteering Wellington can be proud of hosting a brilliant event for all. A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers, particularly Helen Hughes, who wrangled the volunteers to ensure everything ran seamlessly each day. 2025 subscriptions now due Members attending the AGM resolved to raise subscriptions by 20% to cover Orienteering New Zealand levies—our first increase in quite some time!     • In true Wellington Council style, the games that they should axe go ahead and visa versa, so it was with no surprise that following torrential rain on Friday night and Saturday morning we’d be playing. Now I ain’t grumbling about it, cos we ain’t played since 26th June and anymore cancellations means that we have to play ‘double headers’ (Saturdays and Sundays). So I was as happy as an octopus with sixteen legs and given the state of the water on the park, maybe being a cephalopod would have faired well.

    • On Thursday, 17 June 2010, the Wellington City Council Strategy and Policy Committee met to finalise Council's submission on the Local Government Act 2002 Amendment Bill. Radio New Zealand's response this morning was misleading to say the least in that it stated that Wellington City Council had backed down on water privatisation through public pressure. It was one of the more misleading news items that I have ever heard. Council was not changing its policy but was making a weasel worded submission on the Local Government Act 2002 Amendment Bill.

    • Hi, John, thanks so much for joining us. Lovely to have you here. A few questions ahead of your piece with us on June 3rd. Firstly, if you could just talk to us about how everything's going – we’re very, very excited. Thank you. For me, it's a big occasion having Zahara played again. The history of it, is that I had written an earlier saxophone concerto for legendary player Michael Brecker, the jazz musician who has since passed away, and the premiere of that was one of the big moments of my life.

    • Colin McCahon’s famous waterfall paintings are being realised with an 11m high waterfall, McCahon Incarnation by Regan Gentry, installed on the western (city library) end of Wellington’s City Gallery. The work opened on 23 February 2012 as part of City Gallery’s Obstinate Object sculpture exhibition and runs until June 2012. The exhibition coincides with Wellington’s International Arts Festival. McCahon Incarnation is the third work the Wellington Sculpture Trust has commissioned from Regan, others being, Subject to Change (2007) on Karo Drive, and Green Islands, originally on the Plinths and now in the Botanic Garden.

    • Timing is everything. While most of Wellington was recovering from the Hobbit celebrations, Parliament yesterday passed the controversial Local Government Act. And the PSA’s Brenda Pilott, who watched the debate, said the new law was unwanted, undemocratic, just plain bad … “a grim day for communities.” Similar comments were made in June, when Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown warned that the new legislation was ill-considered and undemocratic. She said it would allow local authorities to be amalgamated without a poll being held … thus limiting the opportunity for communities to have their say on local governance.
