    • BNU Pilsner v Miramar Rangers 17 July 2010
      • At 2.25pm Miramar Rangers comprised a sorry rain-soaked crew of six players, so how easy it would have been for Pilsner to claim the points and warm up for the rugby with a few jars in the comfort of the pub. But hey, you turn up and you want to play, rain or shine - and amazingly so did they. By 2.45pm the home team had amassed ten players, one of whom was a mate of Carl’s who had just come along with us for a look-see, so it was game on, reffed by Smithy, albeit in the wrong colour jacket.

    • Cuba Street Meal Steals
      • Served by Bianca Maria Schioler (she/her) Kia ora tātou and welcome back to another season of Meal Steals which your StudyLink budget won’t kick up a fuss about. On today’s menu we’re going to take a trip to the famous Cuba Street, well known to any Wellingtonian as the street for excellent food and creative expression. Sadly, Covid-19 saw the closure of many iconic Cuba Street restaurants, and only a few new ones have popped up in their place in the following years. However, we can contribute to making Cuba Street the same vibrant, cultural-mixing glass of culinary excellence it once was by taking to the streets, and filling our tummies.

    • Dinghy adrift as storm approaches
      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 04/03/2014 - 13:30 - 17:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  21 Police were alerted to a 4m runabout adrift somewhere offshore to the west of Mana Island after breaking down. Communications were via a mobile phone and once Coastguard Mana were dispatched it was determined that they were in fact closer to Hunters Bank near Pukerua Bay. At the same time a severe southerly storm was approaching Wellington. CRV Trust Porirua Rescue with 5 crew members initially had difficulty locating them due to the inaccuracy of the location information given by the people on the boat. They were contacted via telephone and advised that we would release a white parachute flare to help them determine where we were in relation to them. This helped to refine the estimated position meaning that TPR could close in on the area the boat was drifting. Once closer they were advised by the Coastguard Master to activate an orange smoke flare. This was immediately spotted by the CRV crew approximately 3NM away and as they closed in on the smoke they spotted the vessel. The two men on board were getting cold but otherwise well. The fact that they had a means of communication and flares certainly saved them from a potentially disasterous situation as a southerly storm was moving up the country and expected to arrive within an hour or two. • Happy New Year from team DCM
      • Here at DCM, we like to celebrate the special moments that can be found in each and every day. In 2021, we have been sharing one such moment every week via our social media channels - on “Taumai Tuesday”. Here we look back on a year of Taumai Tuesdays... We celebrated when taumai moved into their own homes, often after many years of homelessness - like Peter and Jason. Jason sent us a letter soon after: "Dear DCM crew, I would like to express my gratitude to all of you for helping me onto the next step of my journey and finding me a house. I'd like to acknowledge the humbleness and humility within your organisation, and the way you all treated me as nothing less than human. For that I am truly grateful."

    • Carnival of Souls
      • October is here - and to get into the mood for Halloween and our Spooky Disco we're kicking off October with a Spooky Screening of Cult Classic - "Carnival of Souls (1962)" - Thursday October 3rd - Free Entry - Starts at 7:30pm Bar & Restaurant (Smoked & Pickled) will be open from 3pm for pre-show and during-show kai --- A young woman (Candace Hilligoss) in a small Kansas town survives a drag race accident, then agrees to take a job as a church organist in Salt Lake City. En route, she is haunted by a bizarre apparition that compels her toward an abandoned lakeside pavilion. Made by industrial filmmakers on a small budget, the eerily effective B-movie classic Carnival of Souls was intended to have “the look of a Bergman and the feel of a Cocteau”—and, with its strikingly used locations and spooky organ score, it succeeds. Herk Harvey’s macabre masterpiece gained a cult following on late-night television and continues to inspire filmmakers today --- See you there

    • Metropolis
      • In place of the usual big bangs and anti-catholic burning of an anti-royalist effigy on Saturday night, some of the Fish crew saw the film Metropolis at the Michael Fowler Centre. It’s not the first time I’ve seen it, but it is the first time I’ve seen it that has really done it justice. The film has been restored, almost, to a state of perfection – the edited version we have all seen for the last 80 years now replete with an extra half hour of footage, sourced from Argentina (16mm, grainy and badly scratched), with 11 snippets from New Zealand (presumably 35mm, and in much better condition). Huge round of applause for Frank Stark and the New Zealand Film Archive, and the frankly wonderful job they are doing, rescuing our filmic memories from the nitro-fuelled dustbin of the past.
