The pair finished first and second in the Junior Girls’ National Secondary Schools’ Cross Country Championships at the A&P Showgrounds in Hawera. Sutherland hadn’t beaten McHardy this year, but saved her best for the big stage. “Amy got in front before me. I was running and I was like ‘come on Amy, let’s go, we’re nearly there.’ I think I got a bit of adrenaline or something. I wasn’t expecting to win” Sutherland admitted. McHardy had led all the way. “We both like to take the start and it was a really fast start. We got to the front after about 600 meters. When there was 30-meters to go Ava said ‘well done’ and got past me. We work together, train together and bring out the best in each other. We managed to win the three-person and six-person team races as well which was awesome,” McHardy said. The final time for Sutherland was 11.25.50 with McHardy on 11.27.80. Gabrielle Healy (6th) and Kate McHardy (9th) ensured a Wellington Girls’ sweep of junior honours. A flat start was followed by a downhill section that narrowed out and a short, treacherous, hill climb due to the thick mud and driving rain. “It was really wet and muddy but that made it fun, a real cross country race, a real cool experience,” McHardy enthused. Louise Brabyn (Whanganui Collegiate) was seven seconds adrift in third place. “My favourite training course has eight river crossings and is really fun in the rain. I liked the course,” Sutherland concurred. Both girls are aligned with the Olympic Harriers club. They train and compete in a mixed environment on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Nairnville Park as well as racing most weekends. McHardy beat Sutherland for the Wellington Regional title, but both rely upon coach John Cope for their success. “He makes sure we enjoy it, but when it gets close to competition he challenges us and makes sure we’re putting in the grind,” McHardy said. McHardy first met Cope when she made the Wellington Interregional team while at intermediate. She was fifth in the 2019 Nationals in Timaru and has been the top junior runner in the capital. Sutherland’s parents are eager runners and their daughter got serious about it in 2018. “I had a long-time rival who kept beating me at intermediate. When I beat her the first time I continued to put a lot more effort into it, Sutherland revealed. The next big race on the calendar is the National Secondary Schools’ Road Race in Akaroa, Christchurch in October. The next few decades of human development will depend on big data, AI, genetic editing, quantum computing, space travel and other fields that are, in essence, entirely dependent on mathematics. Quantum particles are too small, space too far, data too plentiful and AI too unpredictable to experiment on these things in traditional ways. Scientists in these fields typically no longer rely on experimental data to tell them what is true or not, instead, they rely on the language of mathematics' ability to describe the world. But is this trust justified? What are the differences between science and mathematics? And where does God fit in? THE MESSENGER The most recent St John’s Messenger newsletter reviews some recent events, and looks ahead to what is next. <a href="https://www.stjohnsinthecity.org.nz/news/october-messenger" class="sqs-block-button-element--medium sqs-button-element--primary sqs-block-button-element" > The Messenger Newsletter   RAISING THE STANDARD OF GIVING Last week, we highlighted the slides from the AGM about the church finances. <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/s9vqtz7wnuqaegp/AGM%20Finances%2030th%20October%202022%20slides.pdf?dl=0" class="sqs-block-button-element--medium sqs-button-element--primary sqs-block-button-element" > Slides from the AGM These show that we are continuing to navigate a difficult financial environment with multiple pressures. Even though St John’s achieved an “accounting surplus” for 2021/22, a large deficit of $400,000 is budgeted for 2022/23. This arises because of:• The need to inflation protect the Trust Fund – high inflation and low returns means very limited real returns are expected this year• Insurance costs are $176,000 (plus GST) for the year – a $20,000 increase on last year and a 50% increase over the last 3 years• Repairs and maintenance – painting the manse, washing the buildings on the St John’s site, and the repair of the Church reception roof have added to costs this year• Higher salaries arising from market demand and the intention to fill the youth and children’s ministry vacancies• A significant decline in annual congregational giving of about $60,000 compared with 2018.Some of these challenges, such as insurance, will require a regional or national approach, as other Churches are facing similar cost challenges. And some of these challenges are ours. Giving should be a joy that reflects our faith and enables our worship, ministry, mission and outreach. Jesus talked about money a lot. At least a third of his teaching was about money and property related matters – the incidents of the rich young ruler and the widow’s mite are forthright in their implications. Jesus did this because he knew that many of those he spoke to considered money more important than the Kingdom of God. Let’s prayerfully re-examine our giving as an important expression of our faith and rise to the challenge of an additional $20,000 a year over the next three years. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " >   ONE CONFERENCE We are excited to have over 240 participants registered for the One Conference here at St John's in the City November 17-19. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > You have the opportunity to attend any of the four main sessions of the conference for just $5 per session.     • Drivetribe will be a mecca for motorheads—Autocade readers welcome
      • Now that the first episode of The Grand Tour has aired, and we’re nearing the official launch of Drivetribe (November 28), we’re beginning to see just how good an investment £160 million was for Amazon when it picked up the cast of The Goodies, I mean, Top Gear (sorry, I get those BBC shows mixed up, and they do have the same initials), along with producer Andy Wilman (who himself presented Top Gear segments many years ago, but we are now spared his nude scenes).    Essentially, you can’t do a show these days without an internet community, so what did the four men do? Create their own. They’ve put their money into Drivetribe, which has attracted an eight-figure investment from additional parties, chief among which is 21st Century Fox—that’s right, Rupert Murdoch. Amazon’s reportedly quite happy with the arrangement—and it certainly helps boost their show.    There are already signs that Drivetribe is going to succeed as a motoring portal–social network, for those of us who have been playing with it. Maybe the Murdoch Press has learned from Myspace? Or, it’s put their money in, but it’s letting experts do their job–among whom is none other than Cate Sevilla, formerly of Buzzfeed UK, and whose blog I followed even before she arrived in the UK the good part of a decade ago. It isn’t a surprise that Cate would do well in social media—she had a knack for it, even back then.    Car enthusiasts were invited to pitch their ideas for tribes some months back, recognizing that we’re not all the same. Additionally, there’s a bunch of us who work in some aspect of the industry, and looking through the tribes, we’re the ones whose ideas have been adopted. For those of you who use Autocade, there’s one linked to that very venture.    As many of you who follow this blog know, I founded Autocade in 2008, a car encyclopædia that wouldn’t have the fictions of Wikipedia (or ‘Wikiality’, as Stephen Colbert calls it). Eventually, I succumbed to modern marketing trends and very lately started a Facebook page on it, at least to post some behind-the-scenes thinking and publicity photos. While it proved all right, my blog posts were here and things were all over the place.    When I first proposed doing a Drivetribe tribe many months ago, I centred it around the marketing of cars, and the result, the Global Motorshow, can be found here. And now that it’s started, it’s become clear that I can put all the content in one place and have it appreciated by other motorheads. In a week and a half it’s grown to about a third of the following of the Facebook page, and Drivetribe hasn’t even officially launched yet. Those members are either other tribe leaders or those who signed up early on. The question must be asked: why on earth would I bother continuing with Facebook?    In addition to Cate, Drivetribe is not faceless. The support crew respond, and there are humans working here. I’m impressed with how quickly they get back to us, and how the site is reasonably robust. On all these points, Drivetribe is the opposite of Facebook.    Granted, I don’t know the other members there, and some I only know through reputation. But then I didn’t know a lot of the people I now find familiar on Facebook car groups. Nor did I know the people on Vox back in 2006, or some of the folks at Blogcozy in 2016. Communities build up, often thanks to common interests, and here’s one that already has a massive online community ready to flock to it. Having three celebrities helps, too, and all three Grand Tour presenters post to the site.    If you’re interested, the scope of the Global Motorshow (originally without the definite article, but when I saw the GM initials in the icon, I rethought it) is a bit wider than Autocade. I thought it might be fun to post some of the marketing materials we come across, the odd industry analyses that have appeared at this blog (updated in some cases), and even commercial vehicles, which aren’t part of Autocade. I’ve chosen to keep the tribe public, so anyone can post if they find something interesting. Let’s hope Drivetribe can keep the spammers at bay: something that the old Vox.com failed to do, and Facebook is desperately failing to do now as well.    Come November 28, we’ll know just how good things are looking, but I’m erring on the side of the positive—something I was not prepared to do for sites such as Ello or Google Plus.

    • Northern Premier 1 Teams End the Year On a High
      • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > A cold, wet NUHC Prem 1 Women’s team after their 5-6 playoff with Karori In an interesting twist, the Northern Premier 1 Men and Women’s teams have both ended their 2019 seasons ranked fifth equal. The Northern P1 Women, in their first year in the competition after possibly a 30 year hiatus, had an exceptional year under the guidance of coach David McNaughtan. With several wins under their belt in their first season, the women made their way into the 5-6th playoffs. In a match which was marred by torrential rain throughout, the Northern women fought to the end against Karori. The turf was underwater for most of the game, but with less than 10 minutes remaining, and with the scores tied 4-4, the rain became too heavy and the umpires called the game off. This left a very cold, wet, but relieved team fifth equal with Karori. The men’s competition was similarly affected by the weather, however it was the Saturday earlier that affected the men. Their penultimate match against Victoria University was unable to start due to heavy rain and hail that put the turf under several inches of water. The game was rescheduled for a midweek late night game. The disruption put pressure on both teams, with the match being the most stressful of the year for coach Jono Mackey and his team. A tit-for-tat scoreline kept the pressure on Northern, but the Northern strikers and excellent keeping by Cameron Loader kept them in the game. The Northern boys ended up triumphing 3-2 over the students, keeping them out of the relegation zone and putting them through to the 5-6 playoff. A death in the Wellington Indians hockey community unfortunately meant that the the 5-6 playoff against Wellington Indians Sports Club was unable to be played. Despite the unfortunate reason for cancellation, the Northern boys were relieved to end the year fifth equal. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > NUHC Premier 1 Men after their final match of the season against Victoria University.
