line-height:150% !important; } } A trip down memory lane This year we have been celebrating our 50th birthday. DCM (Downtown Community Ministry) began life as ICM (Inner City Ministry) in 1969. That’s 50 years of working “to focus on the needs of, and to help empower, those marginalised in the city”. At our Annual General Meeting next month we will be taking a trip down memory lane, and coming together to mark this milestone birthday. As we reflect back over the past five decades, we have been reminded of the common threads which have woven through our mahi. “It was a turbulent age, the sixties... It was against this background that the Inner City Ministry, in the heart of Wellington city, was born...to find ways of helping those who lived in the city, but who were marginalised by it, to take greater control of their lives... People look to the ICM for help, and they are given it. But more importantly, they are helped, individually and as part of groups working together, to find ways of changing their lives.” And from 25 years ago, as we marked our first quarter-of-a-century - “the Inner City Ministry has kept faith with its belief that change is possible, that people can be given the power to shape their own lives, that all of us are responsible for each other”. (Ministry in the City, April 1994.) How appropriate it is that today, our by-line is “together we can end homelessness”, reflecting our focus over the past 15 years on one key marginalised group – people who are experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness. As people who are part of the “together” and who continue the commitment to supporting the most marginalised people in our city, we invite you to join us on Monday 25 November for our AGM. When: Monday 25 November, 5:15pm Where: St. Peter’s Church, cnr Ghuznee/Willis St (hall around the back of the church) Please RSVP by Friday 15 November to matthew@dcm.org.nz or ph: (04) 384 7699. <!-- --> Permanent housing is the solution to homelessness It was an honour for DCM to again host Kris Faafoi, Associate Minister of Housing, here in Lukes Lane today. We discussed our joint commitment to ending homelessness in Wellington and Aotearoa, and we agreed that what people experiencing homelessness need is access to permanent, safe, affordable, appropriate accommodation. We now have a Housing First service here in Wellington: the key challenge is to access sufficient, appropriate, permanent housing. The evidence is clear - more investment in temporary/transitional housing is not the solution to homelessness; a significant investment in permanent housing is. Ireland and Finland have similar populations to Aotearoa. But where Ireland increased investment in shelters/emergency accommodation, Finland adopted Housing First as a national policy, converting shelters to permanent housing. The results are amazing! Ref: Y Foundation <!-- --> Provide a home Do you own any rental properties or know any landlords who would like to learn more about becoming part of the solution to homelessness? Our Housing First team can offer landlords a “no hassles” service – guaranteed rent, no fees, maintenance sorted and funded – and you will be providing a whare for a person who is experiencing homelessness. Please get in touch to find out more! <!-- --> Please help us get the message out there! Forward this email on to everyone you can think of who may be interested in how to respond to homelessness, and just generally people who are passionate about Wellington. <!-- --> Read More Success Stories Nāku te rourou, nāu te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi With your basket and my basket, the people will thrive <!-- --> Copyright © 2019 DCM. State of Emergency

- While it is sad to see the mighty Queen City of Auckland brought to its knees over some rain, it is nice not to have Aucklanders constantly be rude about Wellington weather. And also: note that none of us down here are making fun of them up there, knowing full well that, there but for the grace of God, go us.

Intersection of Impending Death
- The Wellingtonista
- So, the John St/Riddiford St/Adelaide Rd intersection has undergone a bit of a lights phasing tweak. It took this particular Wellingtonista by surprise when, last week, I confidently started to cross John St as the lights turned to red, only to discover that instead of my little green man, I was now the target for traffic coming down from Adelaide Rd.

Friends of Maara Roa
- Maara Roa is a forest restoration project at Cannons Creek Valley near Porirua. Its purpose is to restore the Bush back to what it was before the people who ruined it came. The project started in 2000, after some gorse fires destroyed yet more sections of native bush. A small group of people met to see if something could be done to stop it. The Friends of Maara Roa grew from that.

The life and times of James Walter Chapman-Taylor
- ‘The life and times of James Walter Chapman-Taylor’ enables us to enter into the life and times of a man, a family, a society, and ways of thinking and acting different to, yet not so distant from, our own. We enter the world of an architect, who is also an artist; builder, craftsman; a theosophist, an astrologer, a photographer, a furniture maker.
