      • Hot on the heels of the Barrio development comes another development of inner-city apartments (first blogged on WellUrban). This one is designed by Archaus - the most prolific architects in Wellington. The site has had a couple of schemes proposed for it previously: one by Abri Architects of Auckland which was shot down in flames pretty quickly, and the other, curvy one that never really saw the light of day except for a feature in the Wellurban blog. This one may be around a little longer. The site, is a highly sought after corner close to Cuba St, right on the edge of Ghuznee St and Leeds St. Looking at architects drawings it seems to be about 14 stories tall.

    • October 2009 Update
      • On Monday 5th October 2009 there was a meeting held between Maranui Surf Life Saving Club and Wellington City Council officers. This meeting was called by the council to discuss a new proposed outcome for the fire damaged Maranui building; as revealed by the Dominion Post on Friday the 2nd October. The concept they put to the Maranui members was to demolish the 4 council buildings on the Lyall Beach and replace them with a purpose built “Super Building” which would incorporate Lyall Bay surf club, Maranui surf club, NZAAT Beach House Art Gallery, toilet and shower facilities etc. Maranui Surf Club members were surprised and disappointed with yet another delay and are unsure how this new concept is relevant to the repair of the Maranui building.

Samaritans volunteers are everyday people who range in age from 20 to 80. Wellington Samaritans has been operating since 1965. They have over 80 volunteers and take over 20,000 calls per year. We are seeking people who are good listeners, caring and empathetic, to help operate our 24 hours helpline. We provide full training and on-going support.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sat, 18/10/2014 - 10:15 - 14:15 Operation Type:  Other People Assisted:  0 Total Volunteer Hours:  24 On Saturday members ofthe coastguard crew carried out a number of small support opoerations, 1: Its water safety week and the harbour ranger and police teams with help from coastguard mana were providing advice on water safety. In particular our new crew man Steve was helping with the testing of lifejackets on the breastworks at the Mana Cruising Club, something in the region of 100 plus lifejackets were tested to confirm that they were buoyant and safe to use.  Some lifejackets failed the test and owners advised to replace them.       • Wellington United Diamonds had their third five goal win in a row on Saturday as the downed Petone 5-0 in a W-League game at Newtown Park. The win means they stay in first place on goal difference, but Palmerston North Marist have managed to close the gap to just one goal with a 6-0 win over Seatoun. It took Diamonds just nine minutes to open the scoring through Charlotte Wilford Carroll. It wasn't long before Jemma Robertson thought she had got on the scoresheet tapping in a cross from Dani Ohlsson, but it was somewhat inexplicably called offside and she had to wait to the second half, getting two goals in four minutes to take her tally for the season to 22.

    • Pauatahanui Public Burial Ground Trust Deed
      • The renovation of Pataka Museum’s storage area in 2017 brought to light two documents that are probably the oldest existing paper records of early Porirua. In 1856 the village of Pahautanui (now called Pauatahanui) was the only settlement in the Porirua area. Thomas Hollis Stace, who had arrived with his family from Tasmania in 1853, bought a piece of land on the southern edge of the village. He saw that the village lacked a school, church and cemetery; so he donated an acre of his land to help fill these gaps. The details of this generous gift were set down on two sheets of parchment on 6 December 1856, and it is this 161-year-old Trust Deed that has emerged from the Pataka storeroom.

    • The Twister
      • We finished the boardwalk part of the twister a couple of weeks ago on a beautiful autumn afternoon, which turned into evening by the time we were done. We knew this corner was going to be tight, but after 1 hour of kango action and a couple of test rides we came to the conclusion that this corner is very very tight, so after another hour on the kango we were just able to sneak around.

Piccolo is sporting a big blue Stephen Franks poster in their window, and I'm not sure what it says about potential National voters if Vivian St is seen as fertile advertising territory. La Kasbah has taken it further: not only was the proprietor wearing a Labour badge, with a donations jar on the counter, but Trevor Mallard was filling up on tagine and couscous tonight!

      • Three groups split up. One went out on Protector, one went out on Pelorus and the other stayed in the base and did radio work between both vessels. The Protector crew took the boat out the channel and over the bar a couple of times to do some nighttime practice crossing the bar, holding station in the wind and navigating with the lights. The Pelorus crew operated inshore under the Paramata bridge and in the marina doing manouvering, etc.

    • Busy Weekend For Wellington Rail
      • A busy weekend coming up for Wellington rail improvements. In the main railway station yard, workers will progress the installation of a third main line at the entrance to Wellington Station, which once operational later this year. Elsewhere on the network, upgrade work will continue on the overhead lines which power Wellington’s electric trains. As part of the current upgrade, KiwiRail is installing almost 230 km of wiring and replacing many of the wooden poles which support those wires.
