Ski had launched from Paramatta Bridge, moved to Titahi Bay and then had the failure. Ski was anchored but no local assist available. TAR engaged with master revalidation. Capability issue reviewed with the assessor and task undertaken. On scene advice given to try a restart but ski failed to operate. 1 POB from ski taken onto TAR and the ski with 1 POB assisted close to shore.       • In place of the usual big bangs and anti-catholic burning of an anti-royalist effigy on Saturday night, some of the Fish crew saw the film Metropolis at the Michael Fowler Centre. It’s not the first time I’ve seen it, but it is the first time I’ve seen it that has really done it justice. The film has been restored, almost, to a state of perfection – the edited version we have all seen for the last 80 years now replete with an extra half hour of footage, sourced from Argentina (16mm, grainy and badly scratched), with 11 snippets from New Zealand (presumably 35mm, and in much better condition). Huge round of applause for Frank Stark and the New Zealand Film Archive, and the frankly wonderful job they are doing, rescuing our filmic memories from the nitro-fuelled dustbin of the past.

      • Operation Details Date/Time:  Thu, 21/01/2016 - 11:00 - Tue, 02/02/2016 - 13:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  4 Total Volunteer Hours:  1160 Smasher, a 27" Pelin motor launch split its hull coming off a wave as it was leaving Porirua harbour (vicinity of the outer reef). Smasher was in transit with another vessel which stood by her Mana Rescue1 was tasked to support by police The owner was able to put the vessel ashore on Mana Island (just north of shingle point) before MR1 arrived on scene. MR1 was able to confirm that the crew of smasher were safe, then start to render assistance to strip the vessel and secure her on shore and stern to sea.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Tue, 05/01/2021 - 11:00 - 15:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  2 Total Volunteer Hours:  16 7m runabout had steering failure whilst anchored up diving/fishing on the west coast near Boom Rock. They called CG Radio and gave their location as Titahi Bay. MR1 responded and was unable to locate the vessel anywhere in the Titahi Bay area and their phone was out of coverage. Escalated to Police to assist with enquiring about their location (as we had no way of contacting them). Police eventually managed to get a call connected long enough for them to say 4km south of Titahi Bay. We found them 3.6NM (6.6km) south of Titahi Bay and towed them home to Mana Marina.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 07/11/2021 - 18:30 - 21:30 Operation Type:  CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted:  6 Total Volunteer Hours:  12 Whilst searching for a vessel that had broken down with 4 pob and requested a tow home as a non-member we discovered another one that had broken down on "the  bridge" near Mana Island. We marked their location and told them we would be back for them once we had located the first vessel.  We found the first vessel under tow by someone else coming back into the channel.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Wed, 09/11/2022 - 20:00 - 23:00 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  0 Total Volunteer Hours:  21 A member of the public walking along the shore between Titahi Bay and Green Point observed a vessel at anchor a few meters off the shore with nobody on board. A small black fluffy dog was observed swimming from the boat to shore and running around the coastline in a semi frantic state.  The informant said the vessel was observed empty for 20 minutes and felt like something was wrong. Te Awarua Rescue responded with a crew to search for the vessel. We searched the entire shoreline from Titahi Bay to a few hundred metres past Open Bay. Nothing was found.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 31/10/2021 - 15:00 - Wed, 03/11/2021 - 17:30 Operation Type:  SAROP Cat 1 People Assisted:  1 Total Volunteer Hours:  670 Police activated CG Mana for a swimmer reported missing in Titahi Bay. MR1 with 5 x crew responded Sea conditions were very rough and confused, wind gusting 45 knots, breaking seas of 2.5-3.5 metres in the navigation channel and the route to Titahi Bay. A call was made to CG Mana base to not send MR2 on the tasks as the seas were to dangerous for the smaller CRV. MR1 carried out a barrier patrol and creeping line search of the S.A.D area. Nothing was located Search was called off by Police. Harrison Tew® will run specialised training with senior management, our staff and students in the lead up to a lock down exercise, which will occur on Monday 9 April.  The exercise will be as real-life as possible, which will mean that parents/families will receive notification by way of text, WHS app and/or email.  The information passed will emphasise that this is an exercise/practice and will explain that all updated information will then be posted on the school website. In a genuine incident, should you hear of a lock down at the school, can we please ask that you do not attend the school or phone, as we will not be able to respond.  Your presence at, or contact with the school may make it more difficult for us to manage the situation, and could potentially & place your children and in fact yourselves at risk.  What you need to do now Prior to this exercise, please check that your contact details (mobile phone numbers and email & addresses) are current. This will be the information we use to reach you should an emergency occur at the school. You can do this by checking your details through the parent portal [portal.whs.school.nz] and choosing ‘Details’. Download the WHS App today via Google Play store (Android) or iTunes app store (Apple) Reminders: Earthquake / school closure  This is a good time to encourage you to make or review your family plan around other emergencies, such as earthquakes.  You may find ‘How to get ready’ is a helpful resource. A family plan is particularly important for students who travel to school from out of zone as their transport routes may be cut off.  If a decision is made to close school, for any reason, we will keep our year 9 and 10 students with us until a known adult can come and collect them from the school field.   The only adults permitted to collect a student will be the caregivers and emergency contacts that we have recorded.  We will only release our year 11, 12 and 13 students when it has been declared safe to do so.       • Operation Details Date/Time:  Sun, 07/03/2010 - 11:00 - 16:00 Operation Type:  Other People Assisted:  200 Coastguard Mana made an appearance for the Children’s Day Teddy Bear’s Picnic and Fishing Carnival at Aotea Lagoon. We set up a display to provide pamphlets and information on safe boating as well as taking approximately 250 children on boat rides around the lagoon. The day was a huge success with lots of happy children enjoying the nice sunny weather and getting a chance to have a go in a boat, many for the first time ever. Thanks to all the volunteer crew who turned up to help - without the many helpers it would have been tough to keep all those exited children in line! Click 'read more' to see photos. Sam Reid lead the team out for his 50th game amidst a very noisy reception for the Norths Prems from their Prem Reserve team. Both the 50 from Paddy Carter last week and Sam Reid this week seem to have come around really quickly. Congratulations Reido! Standout Performances A result like this is never from individual efforts but there were a few performances that were noticed on the terraces and worthy of a mention. Dale Sabbagh – sensational kicking from the tee, including a sideline conversion. Around the field his play was incredibly efficient too. Dale seems to be enjoying being one of the senior guys in our young backline and is directing the traffic really well. Keep it up Dale. Sam Reid – Sam shifted to centre for his 50th game but slotted in like he’d been playing there his whole career. Solid defence, good pace and distribution. Sam Godwin – Sam looked like a man possessed coming off the bench. He brought huge physicality to the contact area and some bone-rattling tackles. Some of the more senior supporters on the sideline were heard to start a ‘cheee-hooo’ before quickly putting themselves back in line and hiding inside their scarves. One Norths supporter did a ‘cheee-hooo’ for one of Sams tackles, he couldn’t help himself! Caleb Delaney – What could you say about Caleb’s effort? Just sheer bloody hard work. Cleaning rucks, close in tackles and disrupting opposition throws were just some of the hard work. Callum Harkin – Reward for great enterprise with a try. All around solid effort. Luke Chisholm – came off the bench and played well. Heard on the terraces… ‘he looks like a young Finbarr (Kerr-Newell)’. That would be a great target to live up to. I’m sure the referees of Wellington will be watching on eager to learn if the similarity stretches to Finbarr’s friendly advice for referees young and old. The game itself The 1st half was a slugfest with OBU inching away through the accurate boot of Dale Sabbagh and an early try to Fui in an in-goal pile-up from a drive! Norths scored a try and a penalty in reply, kicked by ex OBU prem Manahi Moana who it was great to catch up with and good to see he is finally clear of all the injuries that disrupted his time at OBU. There was a ding dong battle in the lineouts with both teams winning opposition ball. Norths Hooker Leni Apisai went off injured in the 23rd minute and No 8 Lise Soloa followed in the 35th minute. This was to have an impact in the second half as the early introduction of the replacements meant that there were less fresh legs later in the game to counter the energy coming from the OBU bench. There were quick switches in play from both teams from defence to attack and back to defence again in the space of a minute. Several opportunities were left unfinished form both teams. One break, in particular, had Norths with a 3 on 1 just outside the 22 but the last pass wasn’t good enough. OBU lead 13 – 8 at the break. In the 44th minute Norths were caught offside at a ruck where OBU was looking really dangerous. Dale took a successful shot at the sticks. OBU 16-8 From the kickoff there was an accidental offside when two OBU players ran into each other. From the resulting scrum Norths moved the ball and found some space but the last pass was forward. Then came a period on defence starting with what looked like an unlucky defensive penalty at the ruck. Norths kick for the corner but lost the lineout and OBU clears, but gets penalised again at the next lineout. Manahi Moana kicks the penalty for Norths OBU lead 16-11 At the 56 Minute mark, there is a great 30m run back from Shamus Langton. Norths are offside at the ruck and Dale steps up and takes the 3. OBU 19-11. Shortly after this OBU makes bulk changes. Matt Sleith (7), Kyle Preston (9), James Poloniati (5), Paddy Carter (4), Jonathon Fuimaono (3) all leave the field. Sam Godwin, Matt Fowler, Taine Plumtree, Kenan Gillson and Luke Chisholm come on to the field. All 5 replacement players are fizzing! Immediately there is a charge down and OBU switch hot onto the attack but concede a penalty. Unlucky! Norths struggle with a crooked throw from the lineout but redeem themselves somewhat with some scrum pressure and OBU caught with a hand in the scrum. At the 63 minute mark OBU pressurized the Norths backline. The ball is spilt by Norths then kicked through for Callum Harkin to claim the spoils with try #2 for OBU. Dale Slots the conversion OBU 26-11. There is some great interplay between Shamus and Matt ‘Unit’ Fowler before down the left-hand touchline heading to the sheds. Unit dots down in the corner for try #3 and to clinch the game. Dale adds the icing with a deadly accurate click from the sideline OBU 33-11. There was an injury in the following play to a Norths player who we believe was shown a blue card. Unlucky mate, hope for a speedy recovery. In the 79th minute Norths get some consolation after OBU was penalised for taking down a maul near the OBU tryline. A quick tap results in (#23 I think) crashing through for the try.       • Decision and Recommendation of the Hearing PanelThe Hearing Panel issued their decision on the resource consent application and recommendation on the Notice of Requirement on the 4th of September 2020Decision and Recommendation of the Hearing Panel 4 September 2020 - Pinehaven Streamworks (pdf)Appeal PeriodsPlease note that the appeal periods for the decision on the resource consent application and the recommendation on the Notice of Requirement are different as outlined below.Resource Consent granted by GWRCIf the applicant or any submitters are dissatisfied with the decision to grant the resource consent, they may appeal to the Environment Court under sections 120 and 121 of the Resource Management Act 1991 within 15 working days of the decision date (ie. by 25 September 2020). If no appeals are received by 25 September 2020 on the resource consent decision, GWRC will issue the applicant the consent certificates.Recommendation on the Notice of Requirement to UHCC The Committee have made a recommendation that the Notice of Requirement be approved under section 171 of the Act. This recommendation is to the Upper Hutt City as requiring authority. The Upper Hutt City Council will make a decision within the next 30 working days under section 172 of the Act as to whether to accept or reject the recommendation. When that decision has been made, the Upper Hutt City Council must issue a notice of decision to submitters within 15 working days under section 173 of the Act. Submitters who are dissatisfied with this decision may appeal to the Environment Court under s174 of the Act within 15 working days of receiving that decision. Upper Hutt City Council will therefore inform submitters by email as to when this decision has been made, and the relevant appeal period.Summary of the proposalThe works are proposed over a length of approximately 1,200m in the lower catchment of the Pinehaven Stream. This extends from the Pinehaven Reserve to the inlet where the Pinehaven Stream is piped to the Hulls Creek.The purpose of the works is to reduce flood risk from the Pinehaven Stream to the surrounding area. The works will increase the capacity of the stream and its tributaries to a 1 in 25 year return period, reduce risk of injury or harm from flood flows, integrate overland flow paths into the stormwater network, and enable efficient and effective construction and ongoing maintenance of the structures.The proposal includes changes to the Pinehaven Stream channel and crossing structures in the lower reaches to provide for a 25-year channel capacity. The proposed stream improvement works include the:Creation of natural channel sections with riparian plantingConstruction of vertically sided lined stream sectionsSecuring overland flow pathsRemoving, replacing and constructing new bridgesRemoving three dwellings (4 Sunbrae Drive, 28 and 48 Blue Mountains Road)Upgrading stormwater system inlet pipes and fit with debris screensConstruction of a low wall along the boundary of Willow Park and 10a Blue Mountains Road to divert floodwatersConstruction of a private road access to 30, 32, 34 and 36 Blue Mountains RoadRelocation of utilities which cross the streamThe proposed works are intended to be completed in stages. It is anticipated that construction for stream improvement works will occur over 18 months but may take up to 2 years to complete.Resource consents sought from GWRCThe applicant has applied for the following resource consents from GWRC:Land use consent for excavations within the streambedLand use consent for bank stabilisation works, erosion repair, structures in and over the streambed and earthworksLand use consent for the relocation of utility pipelines over the streambedWater permit for the temporary take, use, damming and diversion of water during worksWater permit for the permanent diversion of water by structures erected as part of the worksReclamation of approximately 50m of streambed as a result of the relocation of the streambedWater permit for the diversion of flood water outside of the streambedDischarge permit for the discharge of sediment-laden water during worksNotice of Requirement sought from UHCCThe proposed designation would cover the area of the proposed construction works described above and would allow for these works to occur. The designation boundary would be adjusted once the structural works are complete. It will be reduced to an extent that is required for the on-going maintenance of the works.The applicant has proposed a number of conditions for the designation to address the effects associated with the proposal. This enables them to perform to their full potential in exams. We have over sixty senior students who receive SAC. The school receives no funding to employ reader writers.  NZQA pays for reader/writers for externals only. At exam times it is very difficult to cater for the high numbers and we are looking for volunteers to help us out. Morning exams begin at 9am and the afternoon session starts at 1.20 pm. They can vary between 1.5 – 3 hours.   You do not need to know the subject but have equivalent to High School Literacy and have legible writing.  You will not be placed with a student you know. Please email Tash.Stuart@whs.school.nz to register your interest. Staff Success  Michaela Manley, science, music and Year 10 roopu teacher, is a finalist in the Aotearoa Category of World of Wearable Arts with a dress made of inner tubes that have been recycled.  We are all looking forward to seeing her creation on display. The Board is a governance body, focussing on the vision and strategic direction of the school while the Principal leads the management of the school, making the operational decisions to implement strategy. Being a school trustee is an important role that needs people with a range of skills and experiences and in order that the Board reflects our community, ideally we want a good balance of gender, ethnicity and skills.  At Wellington High School, the Board of Trustees work to promote the culture and ethos of Wellington High School. After the successful and fun afterwork series—and before you check out for the holidays—we are putting on a training session focussing on compass skills. The training will occur on Kaukau, at 6—7pm Wednesday, 17 December. Our session is aimed at those wanting to learn new skills and techniques, or those with more experience who want to practise their techniques, and is suitable for every ability (kids and adults welcome!). Bring your compass and clothes suitable for the weather, as it can be exposed on the tops. No dogs are allowed on the farmland. The session will be coached by Rachel and Yvette Baker, so please email Rachel at rachel.rosara.baker@gmail.com if you have any questions, or need to borrow a compass. The Endeavour Cup is awarded for development and performance, and the Fortune Cup is awarded for outstanding service to the club. Endeavour Cup Rachel Baker received this year’s Endeavour Cup for her outstanding performances including as part of the New Zealand team at this year’s Junior World Orienteering Championships in Italy. Other nominees were Morag McLellan and Jake McLellan. Fortune Cup Alan Horn received the Fortune Cup. Alan unfailingly provides outstanding support for events, gear, and controlling and planning. Other nominees were Paul Teesdale-Spittle, Helen Hughes, Lachlan McKenzie and Will Vale. Members’ League We will be trialling a members’ league in 2026—a way to introduce some fun competition into events where scores are based on comparative performance, rather than absolute as per race time. Details are being worked through but generally will look like this: For members age 16 or over who run a Red-level course CSWs and OYs will be ‘counting events’ Scores will be allocated based on the formula “Average km rate * (age and gender weighting)” Overall winner: If there are 10 ‘counting events’, we will take your top 6 scores. Unfortunately, due to water quality the first Junior Surf Carnival of the season at Worser Bay was cancelled last Sunday. But we have the Titahi Bay Carnival coming up on Sunday 18 December. Sunday 11 December - Not to be missed is our FABULOUS FUN last session for Junior Surf for the year and a special appearance by Santa and one of his reindeers. Put it in your calendar now. Always are great FUN day! Lifeguard Sport have Whitehorse #2 on Sunday 11 December, venue TBC. We have the Junior Surf Series #2 Carnival on Sunday 18 December at Titahi Bay. We encourage all Maranui athletes (U8’s and above) to attend carnivals. These are super fun events where athletes test their surf skills against other clubs. Information will be sent in the next week or two. Although Mother Nature, more specifically water quality have set new challenges our coaches, kids and parents have all adapted well to sessions. A few people have asked about our sessions when water quality is deemed unsafe to swim. For those at Sundays session I explained we will run sessions when Land, Air, Water, Aotearoa (LAWA) deem the water quality unsuitable for swimming with a modified programme that mitigated risk and reduces our participants time in the water at a depth where they are at risk of ingesting water. If on days where water quality is poor you as a parent don’t feel comfortable with you child in the water feel free to miss those sessions. We want the kids & parents  to have fun & feel safe. Our sport relies on volunteers and at the moment we are in a transitional phase and find our selves in a position where we need more coaches and officials. U7 athletes require a parent/caregiver to be in the water with them at all times. U8 - U9 AGE GROUP we ideally would like a parent/caregiver in the water or water edge ready to enter if required,  If your child requires extra assistance in the water, please enter the water with them, rather than assuming our volunteers will be able to look after them. Please note:  Our club relies heavily on the active involvement of parents, the club cannot function without people volunteering. Kids love to see their parents/caregivers interacting at the club. Parent/Caregivers participation is encouraged in the water at all ages. This is a great way for parents to be actively involved, it’s a great way to increase your own water confidence and have FUN. Please let him know if you want to help.  Matairangi Fun Run, 23 February Hataitai Velodrome,  Open to the public, the Matairangi Fun Run, based on Mount Victoria, runs over the iconic Vosseler Shield course. There are two race options: the One Loop Race (5 km); or the Two Loop Race (two 5 km loops, adding up to 10 km). Each loop has approximately 190 metres of elevation. McVilly Shield Relay, 7 March, Karori Park The McVilly Shield is the first club event for the season and a great way to get to know other people in the club. This relay has teams of three people each. Everyone can participate, runners, walkers, J Team, seniors, masters and friends of the club. Just turn up and we will find you a team. You can either race it or use it as an opportunity to do some training.  Each team must do ten laps of Karori Park. No individual team member can do more than four laps. But you can do the laps in any order you like. The race is randomly handicapped after the teams start. Notices Join this week and save $20 or more Join or re-join Wellington Scottish at Round the Bays this year and you get $20 off your new season of Scottish full adult membership (down from $185 to $165). You can sign up at our bright yellow tent at Kilbirnie Park or you email us at membership@scottishathletics.org.nz and pay Wellington Scottish Athletics 38-9005-0501833-00.
