MSP Blues and Tawa Titans both set for U85 kg Division 1 final
- Wellington Club Weekly
- Above: The MSP Blues and Tawa Titans teams in action when they met back in June at Te Whaea in the decider of the first round JC Bowl, which MSP won 16-12. Photo courtesy of MSP Rugby. To the fair-weather supporter, one thing that has seemingly been a given all season has been that the MSP Blues will march to another Paul Potiki Shield U85 kg Division 1 title. After all, the Blues have been the dominant team of this grade for the last few seasons and indeed the most consistent performing team across all of Wellington Senior rugby in this time...

Return of standard Metlink fares for under 25s
- Metlink
- Fare changes are coming soon for passengers aged 24 and under, following the government’s decision to withdraw funding for age-based concessions. From 1 May 2024, following the rollback of the former government’s age-based concessions on Metlink services: children aged 5 to 16, or older if still at secondary school, will pay half the adult fare, fares for people aged 17 to 24 will return to full price, unless they qualify for an alternative tertiary or Community Connect concession, under 5s will continue to travel for free on all services. Greater Wellington Transport committee chair Thomas Nash says the change will be felt by young people and whānau across the region, who are already struggling with the high cost of living. “I don’t want to end these concessions – we know they have made a big difference to people,” Cr Nash says.

Ngāti Toa School students keen explorers
- Mountains to Sea Wellington
- When Ngāti Toa School teacher Pearl Freemantle told her students there were seahorses living in the sea near Porirua, they didn’t believe her. “They thought I was doing one of my 'jokes' when I told them seahorses are in our local moana,” says Pearl. “One of the year 6 girls, who I had told when she was a year 2 that we had seahorses locally - and who thought they were a mystical being like a unicorn - was leaping with excitement after snorkelling, as she had seen one!”

Blenheim Tournament
- Wgtn U-13 Hatch Cup Team 2009 Blog
- Last weekend we went to Blenheim to play in a mini tournament against Marlborough, Nelson and Canterbury. Our first 2 games against Marlborough and Nelson went well with good team work and 11-0 and 6-0 wins. Our coaches Nigel and Subs were reasonably happy, but we did miss a few opportunities. Our game against Canterbury was to be our big match of the weekend. Unfortunately, half our team were struggling with food poisoning and sickness so we performed well below our best, losing 6-1.

Vote no for both flyover options
- Wellington Scoop
- One week of the eight-week consultation period is already over – leaving less than seven weeks to tell the Transport Agency what we think of their flyovers and their other roading plans. The best suggestion so far has come from Maximus on Eye of the Fish, who recommends that everyone sends a submission saying: I vote for neither of the two options presented. I demand to see a full and fair evaluation of all the other schemes that you have had for the last 2-3 years.

Police search for missing tramper in Lower Hutt
- Wellington District Police
- Members of Wellington Search and Rescue spent several hours last night searching for a man who failed to return from a walk in the Rimutaka Forest Park on Friday afternoon. A Team consisting of 2 LandSAR volunteers and 3 Police SAR members including a Police dog handler located the male just after 5am this morning next to the Orongorongo River, several kilometers from his home. He was cold and hungry, but otherwise in good health. He had not allowed sufficient time to return home in daylight, so eventually had to stay put.

Passchendaele: The Belgians Have Not Forgotten
- Passchendaele: The Belgians Have Not Forgotten Venue: ANZAC Hall Featherston Date: 17 July – 16 August Hours: 10am – 4pm daily This exhibition focuses on how the memories of New Zealand still live on in Flanders today, 90 years after the devastating conflict that cost so many young kiwi lives. These memories are brought to life through images, movies and artefacts. New Zealand lost more men during the 100 days of fighting than any other commonwealth country - 845 on one day alone during the First Battle of Passchendaele, 12 October, 1917. The people of Flanders and, more widely, the people of Belgium have never forgotten this sacrifice, which is commemorated in this very special exhibition.

Outstanding success for Rongotai Scientists
- Rongotai College
- Rongotai College was the most represented school at the NIWA Science Fair in 2023 which is a feat in itself. It exemplifies our "give it a go" attitude which was on display for the judges and the broader Wellington Community. Science Fair Boys The work presented was the culmination of many months of primary research for boys in Year 9 and some innovative product design from our Year 10 students. Projects presented by Rongotai students were really strong and innovative; as a result, we were not only the largest group attending, but also the most successful! In all, 12 awards were made to Rongotai College projects, with some projects winning multiple awards

Thank You, Ten - A Musical Celebration
- Wellington Footlights
- In 2024, The Wellington Footlights Society are celebrating 10 years of bringing musical theatre to the Wellington stage, and what better way to celebrate than reflecting on a decade of music, performance and community in our biggest musical revue yet - Thank You, Ten: A Musical Celebration. Thank You, Ten will take audiences on a journey across the catalogue of Footlights shows, performing one musical number from each production the troupe has staged in the last ten years, some in the form in which we know and love, and others with twists you might not expect. Following several challenging years for our communities, Thank You, Ten also aims to celebrate all the joy and support which theatre brings to the lives of so many, and as such Wellington Footlights are excited to be partnering with the Mental Health Foundation for this production, donating $3 from every ticket sold to the charity.

Starts at 6:00pm and will be finished by 6:30pm CWS CHRISTMAS APPEAL We are dedicating our offering of money on Christmas Day (once again) to Christian World Service (CWS) whose annual appeal is working to Share Food This Christmas. The poorest people are already experiencing the challenges of the climate crisis. Our offerings will help small-scale farmers learn how to grow food and improve their livelihoods in these very challenging times. With the help of our local partners, they will be able to prepare for the more intense natural disasters that come with climate change. There will be special envelopes provided during the Christmas Day service to make a donation; you can put your details on the envelope to receive a receipt from CWS. OFFICE CLOSURE The St John’s Office will close over the holidays starting midday Wednesday 20th December 2023 and reopening the morning of Tuesday 23rd January 2024. During this time there will not be weekly emails, so please check the St John’s Facebook page for any current updates/alerts. The usual Zoom link for joining the services online will continue. NEW YEAR LUNCH Come and celebrate the start of a new year on Sunday 7th January 2024. After the morning service, we would love you to join us for a special New Year Lunch in the St John’s Centre. KOHA : $5 Fellowship, Fun, Delicious Food …...and Ice cream! Hosted by the Building Community Vision Team YOUTH & FAMILIES PASTOR SECONDMENT Next year Hannah North is expanding our ministry to young people by making connections directly with school students. One of our goals for our St John’s ministry with young people is: Build numbers of youth and children attending and being reached by our programmes. To build relational connections with school students and encourage non-churched young people to join in what we do at St John’s, next year Hannah will be at Scots College 10 hours a week working with the Chaplain Rev David Jackson. This secondment is just for 2024, while the Assistant Chaplain Rebecca Wilcox is on 12 months parental leave. Working within a community of over a thousand young people is an expansion of the St John’s youth ministry, and we will find ways for Hannah’s ongoing ministry to be further supported by others. Are you (or someone you know) interested in working part-time with our Youth & Families ministry team? Let us know if you want to know more about this. GIVING ISN’T JUST SOMETHING WE DO AT CHRISTMAS To keep all we do going strong we have budgeted for an overall increase in congregational giving of 10% for the coming year, and asked to discern God’s guidance for our personal/household giving. Giving by regular bank transfer expresses an ongoing commitment to be part of our mission and ministry, and details for setting that up are available on the ‘Donations’ page of the website: https://www.stjohnsinthecity.org.nz/donate If you are already giving regularly, you may want to decide if your giving can change to reflect our goal. We know it is hard times for many, so if you are already giving what you are able, please know it is deeply appreciated. If you are away at Christmas, may God give you safe travels and we look forward to seeing you next year. Wherever we are at Christmas, may our hearts be open to the coming of Christ. Allister

FNZ Soundly Beaten
- Zephyr Rovers FC
- Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall said that Zephyr Rovers had had no problems disposing of lower league opposition today at the Shed of Dreams, despite George Nash (pictured) being full of the flu. "We were five goals to nil up when I decided to have a run in the outfield""said Hall "but when it got back to 5 - 2 I scurried back into the goals for fear of them getting back in it". Hall said Rovers stabilised after his return to goal and Rovers went on to score another four goals unanswered. "I actually had a clean sheet when I was in goal but the stand ins let a couple in" said Hall "and the distribution went from excellent to very poor, which explains why I couldn't buy a goal in the outfield". Hall said the fear was the teams Rovers were playing were not close to the standard of Division 1 so the Rover would have to lift their game several notches if another Div 1 campaign was to be contemplated. "We still need to strengthen the squad" said Hall "unless we end up in Div 2 where we'd be ok".Final: Rovers 9 FNZ 2Zephyr Rovers FC
