Wellington is facing rising sea levels
- Bryan Pepperell - Back To The Future
- At the Wellington City Council Strategy and Policy Committee briefing of December 1 we were shown a computer model of the areas of Wellington that would be flooded by sea level rise as a consequence of global warming. One of the areas that may be impacted is the site of the Indoor Sports Centre. There is no doubt there will be consequences that will be beyond our control even if Wellington were to reduce green house gas emissions.

- Important Dates 1 August : Parent Teacher interviews (Year 9 & 10 only) 3 August : Sports & Clubs Photos 19 – 25 August : School Exams for Seniors 22 August : Board of Trustees Meeting 26 August : Mid-Term Break (SCHOOL CLOSED) 29 August : Future Focus for Senior Students and families 14 September : Learning Conversations 2 23 September : Last day of Term 3 23 September : Year 11 – 13 School Reports on Portal Volunteers Needed Friday 19 August – Thursday 25 August 2016 Some students who receive Special Assessment Conditions (SAC) are approved by NZQA to have someone read or write for them. This enables them to perform to their full potential in exams. We have over sixty senior students who receive SAC. The school receives no funding to employ reader writers. NZQA pays for reader/writers for externals only. At exam times it is very difficult to cater for the high numbers and we are looking for volunteers to help us out. Morning exams begin at 9am and the afternoon session starts at 1.20 pm. They can vary between 1.5 – 3 hours. You do not need to know the subject but have equivalent to High School Literacy and have legible writing. You will not be placed with a student you know. Please email Tash.Stuart@whs.school.nz to register your interest. Staff Success Michaela Manley, science, music and Year 10 roopu teacher, is a finalist in the Aotearoa Category of World of Wearable Arts with a dress made of inner tubes that have been recycled. We are all looking forward to seeing her creation on display. Further details to come!

- Marsden rowing coaches were really happy with our crews' first big hit out at the AON Junior Regatta at Lake Karapiro over the weekend. Ngahere Working Bees Restoring Te Taiao
- Onslow College
- Onslow students, whanau and teachers tore into weeds to release young forest plants in two recent working bees. The teams did their mahi in the forest restoration area next to the Waipahīhī Stream at Onslow College on the 17th and 25th February. Dozens of young rakau, wharariki flax and tussock were liberated from the smothering effects of invasive weeds. Tūī, riroriro, pīwakawaka and tauhou regularly make use of the regenerating forest, affirming the biodiversity goals of the project. The growing ngahere is also used by students and teachers as part of Onslow’s curriculum across a range of learning areas. Year 9 Science students use the forest while learning to measure and assess ecological communities and in developing their value of kaitiakitanga for te taiao.

Car-nival
- WellUrban
- 's going to be huge, of course. This weekend's Cuba St Carnival is set to be the biggest yet, with some unmissable acts on the Main Stage and even the Courtenay Place bars getting in on the act. The open-ended consent means that its future is secure, and you can get there by bus for only $1 (assuming that there are any drivers available). Some of us are getting very excited indeed about the weekend, and with luck even the weather might come to the party.

- Zephyr Rovers opened their Division 1 campaign with a thrashing of Don Logan FC at the Shed of Dreams this afternoon. "I think it is stunning that with so many players out we can still field a strong team and beat a team that has previously given us a lesson or two" said Hall "we took them to the cleaners in the first spell and it was amazing to be 7 - 0 up at half time, even though Pete Roberts (pictured) had a gammy leg".

Blenheim Tournament
- Wgtn U-13 Hatch Cup Team 2009 Blog
- Last weekend we went to Blenheim to play in a mini tournament against Marlborough, Nelson and Canterbury. Our first 2 games against Marlborough and Nelson went well with good team work and 11-0 and 6-0 wins. Our coaches Nigel and Subs were reasonably happy, but we did miss a few opportunities. Our game against Canterbury was to be our big match of the weekend. Unfortunately, half our team were struggling with food poisoning and sickness so we performed well below our best, losing 6-1.

Record Numbers Strip Foodbank Bare
- Downtown Community Ministry
- Food supplies at Downtown Community Ministry’s Foodbank are struggling to cope with the record number of people seeking assistance. Over 40 people received food parcels on Monday in one of the busiest afternoons the Foodbank has known. At 1:30pm when the Foodbank opened 20 people were waiting to be interviewed for food assistance. “Despite generous support for the Foodbank this year, our shelves are once again empty with demand totally exceeding supply,” says DCM Director Stephanie McIntyre. More food is desperately needed to meet the demand.

Newtown group to protest against funding cut to local health care service
- In a classic case of David versus Goliath, concerned members of the Newtown community will protest the quarter million funding cut to the Newtown Union Health Service on Friday. NUHS has been told by the Capital and Coast District Health Board that it will lose $274,000 in funding from July 1. The frontline primary health care service caters to South Wellington’s most vulnerable communities, looking after people who have difficulty accessing appropriate and affordable health care due to socio-economic deprivation and language barriers.

San Antonio School
- Welcome to our school …. We’re the “Little School with the Big Heart!” San Antonio is a Roman Catholic Integrated Primary School for girls and boys from Year 1 to Year 8. The school is situated in the beautiful seaside village of Eastbourne, New Zealand. Eastbourne is located on the Wellington Harbour and has a population of 6000 people. The small size of the school fosters the development of a warm and close school community where families interact often and meaningfully. San Antonio’s special character is evident throughout the school in particular in the positive behaviour and attitudes of the children.
