    • Women's Wrap - 15 May 2017
      • Round 1 is done and dusted for the W League team, and we’ve gone through unbeaten, and very pleased to be 5 points clear from our closest rivals Wellington Utd & Palmy North Marist. The last two games of the round saw us face a strengthened Wairarapa at home. We knew this wouldn’t be the same team that allowed us to beat them 20-0 in the Kelly Cup, and we were right. Wairarapa came out to compete, and their shape, compactness and tireless efforts meant we were finding them hard to break down.

    • DIAMONDS MADE TO WORK HARD FOR WIN - WELLINGTON UNITED
      • Diamonds may have come away with a 5-1 victory, but they were made to work hard for it by a determined Seatoun side that was looking for their first victory over United since 2015. It was Diamonds that dominated the early possession and territory and they went ahead in the 13th minute with youngster Pepi Olliver-Bell netting her first goal for the team. After this Diamonds tried to settle into their usual quick short passing game but Seatoun managed to disrupt them and they never really got into their normal rhythm.

    • Thalia Zedek (USA) and Ned Collette (AUS) | Vogelmorn Upstairs
      • STRANGE NEWS & HOME ALONE MUSIC PRESENT THALIA ZEDEK & NED COLLETTE NEW ZEALAND TOUR - JUNE 2025 Wednesday 18 June - Auckland Unitarian Church, Auckland Thursday 19 June - Vogelmorn Upstairs, Wellington Friday 20 June (Ned Collette only) - Lyttelton Coffee Co, Lyttelton “For those that don’t know, Zedek has been one of the most compelling players and singers of the last quarter-century of American music” - The Quietus “...Collette turns folk music into something uncanny and gorgeous” - Aquarium Drunkard Auckland’s Strange News Touring have teamed up with Wellington record label and collective Home Alone Music to announce two very special shows this June featuring two incredible artists, Thalia Zedek and Ned Collette. A true icon of alternative music, Thalia Zedek has been part of some of underground independent music’s fiercest and finest moments, including Live Skull and Uzi in the 1980s, and noisy 90s indie favourites Come. Since then, Thalia has become a mainstay on legendary Chicago label Thrill Jockey (Trans Am, Rose City Band) with her brilliant Thalia Zedek Band output. As her label tells it, “Her ability to deliver raw emotions through her vivid stories of loss and hope, strife and triumph is unmatched”. New album The Boat Outside Your Window arrives next month, with new singles Tsunami and Naming Names suggesting this record is set to turn heads and destroy worlds. Zedek has never shied away from mining some seriously desperate emotional terrain - Pitchfork While these days he calls Berlin home, Ned Collette is both an Aussie lad and card-carrying Kiwi. Ned’s early years were spent playing experimental music in the underground venues of Wellington and Melbourne, before he headed off into the wild yonder to seek fame and fortune, or at least some amazing adventures. Seven albums in, his latest record Our Other History features hometown pals Leah Senior, Jim White (Dirty Three), Chris Abrahams (The Necks), and more. “...as rewarding a listening experience as I’ve come across in recent times” – Will Oldham on Ned Collette’s album Our Other History This marks the first time Thalia will have ever graced our shores, and it’s a very overdue return visit for Ned. These shows will be absolutely unmissable, so best not miss them, eh? NOTE: South Island Ned-heads will get their fix too, with Ned Collette performing solo at Lyttelton Coffee Co on June 20! • Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall said that Zephyr Rovers had had no problems disposing of lower league opposition today at the Shed of Dreams, despite George Nash (pictured) being full of the flu. "We were five goals to nil up when I decided to have a run in the outfield""said Hall "but when it got back to 5 - 2 I scurried back into the goals for fear of them getting back in it". Hall said Rovers stabilised after his return to goal and Rovers went on to score another four goals unanswered. "I actually had a clean sheet when I was in goal but the stand ins let a couple in" said Hall "and the distribution went from excellent to very poor, which explains why I couldn't buy a goal in the outfield". Hall said the fear was the teams Rovers were playing were not close to the standard of Division 1 so the Rover would have to lift their game several notches if another Div 1 campaign was to be contemplated. "We still need to strengthen the squad" said Hall "unless we end up in Div 2 where we'd be ok".Final: Rovers 9 FNZ 2Zephyr Rovers FC

    • Merch, baby - MERCH!!!
      • Well, lordy, lordy me - what have we here, then?! After running an (entirely unscientific) Insta poll, we here at Slow Boat have listened to the voice of the people, and have bowed to popular consensus, and had manufactured a limited quantity of marvellous looking Slow Boat hoodies, alongside the regular tee shirts, a new style of (very robust!) tote bags (shall we refer to them as Boat Totes? Yes, I think we shall!) and, for the first time ever - two (count 'em!) varieties of SB trucker caps!! These are available for purchase instore now (my advice - get in quick while we still have a good range of sizes and colours!) so you can be fashion forward, and the envy of your pals. Tees are now $39.50, caps $30, totes $25 and the deluxe hoodies are a still perfectly reasonable $75 - I mean, what price happiness? What price... fashion... Feel free to drop us a line or call (04 385 1330) if you'd like to secure yours, and we'll be seein' ya soon - will have some Record Store Day 2025 related news to share in the upcoming weeks... Peace and love, THE SLOW BOAT CREW XX

    • Good sports
      • There's a Waterfront Development Subcommittee meeting on tomorrow night, and for once, I'm not going to put myself through all that pain. While there's no single development up for specific debate, this time, feedback is due on the entire draft Waterfront Development Plan, so all the interested parties are having their say.Of the 633 written submissions, 604 were about the future of indoor sport given the changes to Sheds 1 and 6; and in particular, most of these called for the ground floor of Site 10 to become the new indoors sports venue, along the lines of what I've also been suggesting.

    • Route announced for Wellington Northern Corridor
      • The NZ Transport Agency Board has announced key decisions on the route for the Wellington Northern Corridor, marking a major milestone in the strategic development of this section of State Highway 1. The corridor, identified by Government earlier this year as one of seven roads of national significance, will be developed as a four lane expressway from Levin to Wellington Airport. The corridor will be built in sections with the overall route substantially completed within the next ten years. Today’s announcement includes the decision to progress Transmission Gully rather than the Coastal Highway Upgrade as part of the Wellington Northern Corridor.

    • Ssendam Rawkustra
      • A multi-headed rhythm beast arising in 2007 out of the murky depths of the South Wellington mental health scene, 12 years, seven practice rooms, 1 album, and countless performances later (including 10 or more outings at the Newtown Fair), the Ssendam Rawkustra are still going strong and are as raw, cuz, as ever! The Rawkustra aim to mesmorise listeners with their musical oxymoron of organised percussionistic chaos, drawing on a plethora of influences from Maurice Ravel to the Doors, under the inspired direction of maestro Andreas Lepper, with spiritual oversight from the Assistant Vicar of Newtown, Reverend Richard Noble.
