      • For one day only, - Sunday, today, you can see the city barricaded off. By tomorrow, it’ll be gone. It’s part of the Litmus series of One Day Sculpture, and this time has been brought to you by artiste duo Heather and Ivan Morison. It’s called the Journee des Barricades, and to me, seems site specifically reacting to the inspired sculpture outside the Athfield renovation of the o

    • A Fabulous New Sculpture for Waterfront.
      • The Trust is pleased to announce that it is advancing arrangements for the sculpture Nga Kina by Michel Tuffery to be installed on the Kumutoto feature of Wellington's Waterfront. The Trust's Chairman, Neil Plimmer, says it is the right art work on the right site. “The initial public response has been fabulous. The work will transform and strengthen the appeal of this northern part of the waterfront.

    • Building rumours 15: Forest and Turd
      • hanks to DeepRed for pointing this out: the so-called "Te Aro Towers" on the former Forest & Bird site on the corner of Taranaki and Wigan streets.Oh god. I'd been forewarned of its awfulness, but with higher-res images now available it looks worse than I expected. It really doesn't make it easy to promote high density urban living when unimaginative crap like this is what the market provides.

    • Belmont - Possible Disruption to Services
      • There may be some disruption to Belmont services over the next week. A number of trees have grown up into the 11kV supply line to the Belmont site and present a significant forest-fire hazard to the landlord's forest. As such the power has been disconnected. Until the power can be restored it will be attempted to run reduced services on a combination of batteries and a mobile generator.

    • Intense, man!
      • I've been blathering about it all over the place, but the Wellingtonista has thus far remained staunchly unblathered about IntensCITY week, which started yesterday. Downtown Wellington is full of exhibitions, posters, shipping containers, lunchtime talks and video installations, all celebrating and/or critiquing our urban spaces. The official site is on the WCC website, and brochures are available in cafes, libraries and council places, or as a big juicy PDF.

      • For a brief moment in time it seemed as though time had stood still, and that El Terry had given up finishing it, but then it was restarted with new contractors who actually seemed keen to complete the project. It’s one of the more complex developments Wellington has seen for a number of years: taking a barren empty site and layering on it a monster carpark for initial income generating pote

The Examiner says it aims to be “… a site where we look deeper and think harder about the city we live in and the issues that matter to us. It is also a forum for telling Wellingtonians’ stories, especially for people who would not otherwise have a voice.” Neat. Welcome, The Examiner.

    • August 2014: 4 Plinths 5 call for proposals
      • The four plinths are the massive bollards situated on the waterfront between Te Papa and Circa Theatre. It is on this site that the Wellington Sculpture Trust showcases New Zealand sculptural practice with the biennial temporary sculpture installation: the 4 Plinths Sculpture Award. The chosen sculpture will form part of the New Zealand International Arts Festival’s visual arts programme and remain in place outside Te Papa for up to two years.

Conrad Martens painted this view of Kororareka, the site of modern Russell, in 1841. It’s based on sketches which he made during on a brief visit there in 1835. Unfortunately there is nothing planned for tonight or Tuesday, the days were reserved in case any earlier shows had to be cancelled due to rain. That said, the lights are still on, so if you want to enjoy them without the crowds, now would be a good time to do so!

There were some particularly interesting goings-on a couple of weekends ago, and when I walked past early one the evening the masked artists were hard at work; later that evening they were still there, but being sternly spoken to by the boys in blue.

    • Downstage tribute to Martyn Sanderson
      • It is with great sorrow that the Board, Staff and Members of Downstage Theatre, received news of the passing last night of founder and former director, Martyn Sanderson. Martyn was one of several visionary Wellingtonians who worked together in 1963 and 1964 to start Downstage, New Zealand's first professional theatre, and he appeared in or directed many early productions, including starring with Peter Bland in the first production on the Cambridge Terrace site: Edward Albee's Zoo Story.

    • Wellington is facing rising sea levels
      • At the Wellington City Council Strategy and Policy Committee briefing of December 1 we were shown a computer model of the areas of Wellington that would be flooded by sea level rise as a consequence of global warming. One of the areas that may be impacted is the site of the Indoor Sports Centre. There is no doubt there will be consequences that will be beyond our control even if Wellington were to reduce green house gas emissions.

    • Whats happening on Holland?
      • Down here on Holland St, construction is definitely nothing new. Of late we’ve seen the Century City development starting to shape up, as well as the smaller additions of the oh-so-contemporary product spec office and the always-vibrant fuel expresso HQ. I had assumed that the construction site present on the first floor of the ‘zebra hostel’ was just simple renovation or the like; but the additon of an interesting catipillar-like lighting trail has picqued both my curiosity and expectations.

    • A New Farm for Ohariu
      • It has been confirmed that Meridian Energy plans to build a new wind farm in the Ohariu Valley, with 31 turbines across 4000 hectares. The proposed site is owned by 5 farmers, who banded together in 2002 to negotiate proposals with various energy companies. Talks had stalled over price issues in 2003, but recently an agreement has been reached. Having met with the community last night, it is unclear whether the project will face significant opposition from the local residents.

    • Silverstream Spur Upper Hutt, saving a public amenity for future generations
      • Update September 2021.On the 22nd of September 2021 Upper Hutt City Council voted to scrap the controversial Memorandom Of Understanding that was signed back in 2016 between UHCC and a developer seeking to build 100 houses on he Slverstream Spur. Silver Stream Railway is obviously delighted with this step as we understand talk of constructing any houses on the Spur is now scuppered, a major step change from only a few months ago when we saw concept drawings of the 100 houses overlooking our site.

    • Manners Mall submission
      • The Architectural Centre has made the following submission : Manners Mall Carpark on the WCC’s proposal’s for the redevelopment of Manner’s Mall. As you may note from the written and drawn information, we were very much less than impressed. We are calling for the WCC to scrap the current scheme owing to its predominate use of car parking, and to re-design the spaces for the use of people, not cars. Wellington deserves better than this from our Council, especially at such an important, central city site.

    • Big discoveries at Kaiwharawhara Stream
      • Wellington East Girls College Year 13 Biology students are scientists making big discoveries and building big action plans! Through their NCEA assessments in 2018, they have been studying the Kaiwharawhara Stream, investigating how changes in the physical characteristics of the waterway are impacting the native fish and invertebrates. Now they are turning science into restoration! They were interested in one site especially, a small tributary of the Kaiwharawhara where it flows from Johnston's Hill in Karori, through the Karori Cemetery and out into the main arm of the Kaiwharawhara at Otari Wilton Bush.

    • Sir Michael Fowler
      • It’s a rare thing for an Architect to become a Mayor – and even rarer for an Architect to become a Knight. We (NZ) have only got a couple of benighted Architects, and there has only ever been one person who has attained both honours. Our only knighted Architect Mayor, Sir Michael Fowler, has sadly just passed away. I was not in Wellington when he was around, and only knew of him in a second-hand manner at the time, so I have asked an esteemed contributor to the site if he would like to say a few words. And lovely words they are.

    • Making a mess of a waterfront park
      • We are appalled by what is proposed for Frank Kitts Park – sliced, diced, cut up by the City Council, and no longer a park but a building site. On Monday night a group of us – Civic Trust Board members – were invited to a presentation by Council Officers. They told us they were just doing what the Council had asked them to do: to progress a new building on Frank Kitts Park, but first to survey ‘the public’ over four weeks only, starting this Friday, by asking us whether we want a fale malae on Frank Kitts Park.

    • Two Pensions?
      • In the heart of Wellington’s old Chinatown, namely the narrow low-scale neighbourhood of Haining St, there is one of the few trees that are growing in Te Aro, nestling happily in the lee of an also fairly non-descript warehouse building. Until fairly recently the site was the home of a film unit, a student flat, and parking for assorted businesses, until it was sold and resold and eventually ended up in the hands of the property spruikers known as Rich Mastery: organizers of ‘property seminars’ - otherwise known as a way to “get rich quick”.

      • There's a Waterfront Development Subcommittee meeting on tomorrow night, and for once, I'm not going to put myself through all that pain. While there's no single development up for specific debate, this time, feedback is due on the entire draft Waterfront Development Plan, so all the interested parties are having their say.Of the 633 written submissions, 604 were about the future of indoor sport given the changes to Sheds 1 and 6; and in particular, most of these called for the ground floor of Site 10 to become the new indoors sports venue, along the lines of what I've also been suggesting.
