- 2012/13 Season Wrap up Welcome Another season finished, but this is not just any season as the improvement in the club both on the field and off the field has been immense. The Pearce Cup team under Mark’s captaincy has shown what can be done with commitment and a years experience, second in Twenty/20 competition, 3rd in one day and overall competition, and with an ounce of luck could have been better. Sam Dean, Mark Houghton and Henry Walsh all scoring over 500 runs, Henry getting the second most in club history with 621 runs. The second team showed a marked improvement, they just need the consistency for next year, and the thirds definitely benefited from having both new and more experienced players. James Ross’s team enjoyed the experience of playing intercity and will be all the better for the experience, whilst Sharon and the women’s team experienced there first win’s and with the learning and improvement can only be more impressive next year. Both the Twenty/20 teams struggled for players at various stages of the season and there results reflect this, so if any of our players recently retired miss the sound on leather on willow, sun on your back, think about next season, 3 hours every Saturday is all it takes. On Behalf of Gary and myself we would like to thank the committee for all their efforts , all the volunteers who have helped out throughout the season and especially to Nick Wanden to his great work in youth development, the guys that helped in coaching and to Henry Skipper for his commitment to coaching the schoolboys team. Until next season, keep safe and rest well, it’s only 6 months to the new season. President Jakey and Chairman Goz Premier What a tremendous season for the team finishing third in the Premier Wellington Cricket Competition. It started off well with a positive preseason in both indoor training and then winning the Preseason Tournament in the Wairarapa. Recruitment of a couple of new guy’s to the club in Phil Tunnicliffe, Sam Le Gros, and Kieron McComb really added diversity to the teams playing ability. All 3 formats we played pretty good cricket; making the final in the 20/20, only just missing out again on making the one day final and playing positively in the two day round. It shows that when you have the ability to put runs on the board you can really put pressure on teams and this was what we were able to do on a regular basis and formed what was part of a successful formula. Never in my time as a player at Taita have we had 3 members of the club get over 500 runs in a single season let alone from one team so well done to Sam Dean, Mark Houghton, and Henry Walsh on that achievement. With the current crop of players and under the guidance of Howie and fellow senior members of the team leading the way, I see a very positive future for this group and the club on a whole. There are still a few things that we can do to improve which is fantastic but that is up to each individual, this does not matter what team you play in taking responsibility for their own game (all 3 facets - Batting, bowling, and Fielding) and the team thing will work itself out. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their ongoing support with our son Angus. Wendy and I really appreciate what people at the cricket club have done whether that is time, helping, donations, and or a combination of these. It is so heart warming to see people playing games with him, talking with him and really caring for how he is going. Dave Little Premier Reserve This season was our first taste of Cricket Wellington’s new format, which meant that the Premier Reserve side at Taita would be matched against most clubs second teams. This system meant a far more even playing field than has been seen in the past in this grade. The young side that we had last season, was mainly kept together for the 2012/13 season. Also we welcomed the return of Taita veterans Zac Curtis, Michael Green and Sam McGavin into our team. Included in the format change for this season, meant the end of T20 games in Premier Reserve grade. This giving us a delayed start to the year, this delay was only to increase when our season started with a bye and an abandoned match vs Eastern Suburbs. Once the season started for us, we were very keen to start to keep up the momentum from pre season; we started with a close 1 run loss to Hutt Districts. In this game we had let ourselves down in several areas, and were very keen to address these going forward. Out of the remainder of the one day games we only lost one out of seven that being a disappointing home loss to eventual grade winners Johnsonville. Recording wins against Collegians, North City, Petone-Eastbourne, Wainuiomata, Naenae and University saw us finish in the top six (fifth) heading into the two day round. The main highlight of the one day round was posting 387/6 vs Wainuiomata (Sam McGavin 125, Jason Doyle 78, Zac Curtis 54 and Tyler Johansson 51) at Bryan Heath Park, very strong team performance in that game. We went into the two day rounds with plenty of confidence, however this did not quite reflect in the results, as we struggled through this part of the competition. We failed to win a game outright and only picked up first innings points once. However, there were still several positives to take out of the two day round. Chander Ravi, played a few games for us this season and had great success in the two day games scoring 119* vs Hutt Districts and picking up 5/16 vs Petone-Eastbourne. Chander is a great talent that Taita looks forward to seeing more of in the near future. Jason Doyle scored a patient 104 vs Johnsonville, when the pressure was on us. Topping the runs tally for the season was our MVP Sam Bourne, who has had a great season. Sam scored 436 runs this season and also chipped in with 12 wickets making this a season to remember. We look forward to more of the same next summer. Finally I would like to thank the team, for all the hard work they have put in. Special mention to Diz, Sam McGavin, Jason Doyle and Matt Pepper for all their help this season, it was much appreciated. Look forward to seeing you all in the 2013/14 season Shaun Gillespie Grade 1 The first season of Grade 1 should be considered a success for the Taita 3rds given the selection and player continuity issues that invariably come with the lower grades. Successful efforts with the bat for Michael Hayman, Stephen Hobson and Bede Jordan saw plenty of runs put up on the scoreboeard. Consistent bowling efforts from Aaron cope, along with excellent all round performances from Pat Smith contributed to some very competitive games. The nature of the game and league following restructuring of the senior grades meant that we would have to face some strong teams and some weaker ones. The final position of fourth reflects well on the suitability of the team playing in grade 1 and speaks volumes on the abilities of the new, younger players entering the club. Mention needs to be made of players filling in for gaps in the team – without whom we’d struggle to put eleven on the park. Looking forward, the team has a very strong base of players around whom a structured competitive unit can be built. With some off season training and recruitment, Taita Grade 1 can make a definite push for a top 3 finish in the 2013-14 season Rahul Jayakar Senior Three The introduction of an intercity competition for the old 2A grade promised some new and interesting challenges for all players involved. The season started with grading games in the one day format to determine grades 2 through 5. Taita started strongly with a gutsy effort under darkening skies, winning over Eastern Suburbs. More victories saw us placed in grade 3 for the rest of the season. Round 5 against Johnsonville saw our one and only win in the two day section of the season. A few hiccups, including fielding a competitive 11 each week, dropped catches and staying focused on the job at the right moments let us down throughout the season. The positives to take from the season were Connor Bliss and Lincoln Craig from St Bernard’s College providing some youthful energy, Sam Ross and Mark Haste taking 30 wickets each, and Mark Haste and I being the first to score over 300runs in a few years. A more committed, consistent core group of players for next season, along with a closer relationship with the grade 1 side should finally see us push for some long awaited silverware. James Ross Women 20/20 The women’s team experiences several highlights to their second season as a team. Having all started the first season as first time players, the growth in the team has been immense. This season, we started off with a win against Petone, while extras played a large part in the actual score, it was a confidence builder. We were joined this season by Carol Graham, Rachel Leighton and Mary Dickson, who had all played at a school level. Their experience and skill showed through and with the improved skill level of Lisa Jones and Candi Webb, our team of girls were bowling wickets, making runs, and having high ran partnerships. Magda Searle, Jill Harris, Marie Jones, Lisa Jones and Caitlyn Denton all had catches in the field. Liai Steere to be commended on her dedication to fielding and Jill Harris for her scoring and continued support even though injury. I am aware that this may sound insignificant in comparison to the men’s games, but compared to last season, when the opposition usually had to field only its first 2-3 players to take the game, it marks a huge improvement. The majority of our games went the whole 40 overs. It is hoped that we will have all our players returning for a third season, and that we can recruit some more players over the winter to ensure that we have a full playing squad each week. Thanks, also has to go to Lachlan Harris and Shane Jones and Bradley Webb for filling in when the team has been short and a big thank you to Chas Jones and Troy Denton along with Lachlan Harris who umpired the games. At the conclusion of the season, we had had two wins, and one default so were on the score board! For me personally, my goal of the season eluded me but I’m hoping that next season will be the one for me, and break through that double figure barrier and get my 10 runs!!!
