    • Website & Ticketing Changes
      •   CHANGES TO BATS WEBSITE & TICKETING IN 2016   Big news! As part of an exciting digital redevelopment in 2016, BATS ticketing system will be changing. Feedback from our artists says that unpaid bookings need to go, and we agree! For those who haven’t booked through BATS before, in the past, our audience have been able to book tickets without paying until the night of the show. From 2016 we’ll be turning off unpaid bookings and shifting to paid only ticketing. This change is ahead of an exciting website upgrade later on in the year, which will make booking faster and easier. On the sparkly new BATS website you’ll be able to book for multiple shows and ticket specials will be available online for the first time. Our new mobile-friendly site will promote our shows more effectively and be an awesome resource for artists putting on shows at BATS.     WHY PAID ONLY TICKETING IS GOOD FOR BATS AND OUR SHOWS:   Shows won’t lose money when unpaid tickets aren’t collected on the night. Sold out houses will actually be sold out! Advance booking numbers will be more useful as they’ll be less likely to fluctuate There will be no need for a wait-list, so busy shows will be more likely to start on time Fewer fiddly transactions at the Box Office will make the queue move faster!   A BIT MORE INFO ABOUT THIS DECISION: - Unpaid ticketing has been offered since BATS opened in 1989, originally because there was no option but to pay for tickets in person (cause the internet didn’t exist, and our system ran on Microsoft Excel!) - Technology and people’s booking habits have changed over time; although they can be convenient for people wanting flexibility, unpaid bookings are no longer an effective booking option. - More than two-thirds of BATS audience now book online, and the majority of those people already choose to pay for their tickets when they book, so moving to paid only ticketing will effect a proportionately smaller number of people. - Currently, a high proportion of our audience book very close to the event so there’s less need for people to pay later when they know they’ll definitely be attending. - We’ve identified a need for our ticketing to be more efficient and fairer for our shows, so this decision is an important step in that direction. BATS affordable ticket prices and low inside charges (like the $1.50 booking fee) won’t be changing.   Ticketing Q&A   Here are some questions and answers for anyone booking a ticket next year:   I don’t have Internet access. How do I book a ticket? We’ll be able to take credit card bookings over the phone. If you’re not able to book online there will still be door sales available for any shows that are not sold out in advance. Or, you can call into the Box Office to buy a ticket for a show on a future date – see next question for more details. When will the Box Office be open so that I can book tickets in person? The Box Office will open at 5pm on show nights for walk-up bookings and ticket collection. You’re more than welcome to pop by to purchase or collect tickets for a future show. We regularly have door sales available on the night, though we recommend arriving at least twenty minutes before show time.   I like to bring groups to the theatre. How do I book if I want to bring several people with me? Group bookings will also need to be paid for up-front, but we’re retaining our awesome group rate. Tickets for groups of six or more are a dollar less than our concession price tickets! If you’re booking for a large school or work group, get in touch with our Box Office as we may be able to arrange invoicing you in advance.   Will I still be able to book tickets by emailing book@bats.co.nz? No, but BATS will still be contactable by email to answer any queries you might have. You can also leave a message with the Box Office on (04) 802 4175 and we’ll get back to you ASAP. If you’re offered complimentary tickets to BATS shows, booking instructions will be in your email invitation. We’ll be working on an automated complimentary ticket booking system via the new BATS website. I can’t print my prepaid tickets! What do I do? You’ll still be able to pick-up prepaid tickets from the Box Office, either in advance or on the night of the show. This also means that our Box Office queue is likely to move much faster, so there will be less waiting in line before the show starts!   Can I show tickets on my phone to get into the theatre? Not just yet. We’ll be looking at options like this as our systems continue to evolve. Phone tickets would reduce paper waste, but we currently count paper tickets to double-check audience numbers which is an important safety precaution.   Will this change make BATS tickets more expensive? Nope! We’re committed to keeping theatre affordable. If anything, tickets will get slightly cheaper because, unlike other ticketing providers, we’ll stop charging credit card fees. This means the price of the ticket will be the price you pay; tickets won’t be more expensive just cause you bought them online!

    • Colour the Guano!
      •     COLOUR THE GUANO! Sharpen your pencils and fire-up photoshop: we’re running a competition for upcoming visual artists or graphic designers to create a fresh new artwork to adorn the cover of the BATS quarterly programme brochures for 2016. This is a great chance to collaborate with a key player in Wellington’s live performance scene by creating a piece of printable visual art that is in some way a response to theatre or performance. Find the design brief and prizes below along with more info about BATS Theatre and an example of one of our 2015 Guano brochures.   Design brief:   A strong cover image is key to people picking up a copy of the Guano, so we’ll be looking for x4 designs that are eye-catching, memorable and will work effectively at the restricted A6 print size. The ideal cover image should make you curious about what’s inside…  Submitted artworks should be a visual response to either (or both) of the following ideas: 1. the experience of performance 2.  breaking theatre open We’re keeping options open: your design could be photographic, digital artwork, mixed media, or sketched, photo-realistic or abstract. Entries can be produced any size, but bear in mind winning images will be printed at A6 (105x148mm) so will need to look good at around the size of a postcard. We would also consider printing a close-up of a larger artwork.   What’s in it for you? As BATS is a charity we don’t unfortunately have a massive cash prize with which to reward our winners. Aside from our undying love the four winning artists will receive: Their artwork printed on the cover of one of the four Guano issues for 2016. An artist profile on BATS’ redeveloped website. Winning artworks will be displayed in Lumen, the BATS bar, on rotation alongside a printed artist profile. A double pass to four BATS shows of your choice throughout the year. Other treats to be confirmed! (oh my gosh, what could they be?) All entries received will also be displayed in an exhibition at a Wellington gallery space (Details to be announced in 2016) What is BATS Theatre? BATS Theatre was established back in 1989 as a home for emerging artists to stage new NZ performance work in a supportive, professionally run venue. 26 years later BATS is Wellington’s leading developmental theatre. This year BATS has almost completed a diverse and busy programme of 101 different shows, including stand-up, dance, and improvisation, alongside a mix of more traditional and experimental new theatre. Keeping theatre affordable is a driving BATS philosophy, with an average ticket price of just $15. BATS is recognised as an Arts Leadership Organisation by Creative New Zealand and is supported by CNZ and the Wellington City Council.   What is the Guano? Guano is BATS quarterly printed programme, packed full of the three months worth of BATS shows (Guano means bat poo, so the programme is packed full of all the sh*t you can see at BATS). There have been four issues a year for around twenty years!  The Guano is a great way for BATS regulars and fans to see what’s coming up all in one go, but also contains key info for newbies like how BATS works, how to book a ticket, and how to find the theatre. It’s current format is an A3 brochure that folds down to A6. Every few months 3000 copies are printed and distributed by Phantom to cafes and hot-spots around the city. We keep try to keep text and layout simple, as it’s packed full of very diverse images created by our shows, and restricted space means listings are small. This year’s cover images have focused on our recently refurbished building, but in 2016 we’re looking forward to showcasing more diverse and interesting artworks that may appeal to arts-fans who are keen to attend bold or challenging new live performance events.   Next year’s design may change slightly, but you can view the current issue of Guano online here: http://issuu.com/batstheatre/docs/guano78issuufinal - Bear in mind that a paper copy opens up to full A3 size Who picks Guano up? BATS audience is diverse, and can change from work to work, but a typical audience member is likely to be a university student, young professional or someone involved in the arts. They are digitally savvy, discerning and are probably already engaged in Wellington cultural events in some way either through music, film, food or festival events.  Guano is also a key tool for attracting new theatre-goers to participate in what can often seem like a niche activity. We’re interested in Guano as a tool for engaging curious young people who are inclined to attend live performance, but haven’t yet been compelled to visit BATS. Nitty gritty - We’ll need entries to be able to be sent in electronically to ed@bats.co.nz - Winning entries will be judged by a small panel of BATS staff and an industry representative - BATS may re-use unedited entries with credit - Guano covers will require basic text to be laid over the image - Tickets & drinks awarded as BATS vouchers, and subject to voucher conditions Email entries (and any questions) to BATS Marketing Manager Ed Watson on ed@bats.co.nz   Competition closes Sunday 6 December 2015 We’ll contact four winners by Monday 14 December requesting a bio and headshot, and info on how to claim prizes.

    • The F Word Return Season
      • Best on Tap presents: The F Word – Sex without the Ism Okay, so the sexes are equal in the eyes of the law. What the F happens now? Returning to BATS after a sell-out opening season and nationwide tour is a new and improved The F Word - a sometimes funny, occasionally serious, but always-authentic exploration into what FEMINISM means in modern day New Zealand. In a mixed up new world we are told gender no longer matters, yet girls are drenched in pink and boys still look forward to earning more. We ask, how are men and women are supposed to navigate these blurred lines? How should we work together as colleagues? Whose surname do our kids get? And most importantly, who should pay for dinner on the first date? The F Word follows a group of friends over a few years as they struggle to put equality ideals in place in their day-to-day life of dating, work and babies. Occasionally this struggle descends into the surreal… STARRING: Nicola Pauling (Voice Arts Trust, WIT, #Divas), Kate Wilson (Letters from the Front, WIT, #Divas), Geoff Simmons (Letters from the Front, WIT, Improv Bandits), and Matt Hutton (Secrets, Letters from the Front, WIT). “Impeccable comic timing" - Theatreview “A slick and polished presentation with lively and energised performances, gives a new take on an old theme" - The Dominion Post “Slick, charming, and bursting with energy – The F Word is a show with something to say and it says it incredibly well.” - Manawatu Standard “Such thoughtful material has no business to be so entertaining… Best on Tap deserve acclaim for their plea for honesty and for offering some sense of the size of the problem in this classy and spirited critique.” - Theatreview Join the discussion at https://www.facebook.com/theFwordWellington Show duration is approximately 75 minutes. The Propeller Stage is fully wheelchair accessible; please contact the BATS Box Office at least 24 hours in advance if you have accessibility requirements so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
