    • Monty has his eye out for a new home
      • 6 Jul 2011
      • Newswire.co.nz
      • MONTY the one-eyed kitten and his mate Bear are hoping for a home. They were among about 20 cats on display in Brooklyn when SPCA volunteers held an adoption run there. The scheme sees association volunteers visit suburbs at weekends to try to find homes for their charges and allows people to adopt and care for a kitten or cat which has been orphaned, sick or bottle-fed from birth.

    • Colossal squid on display gets check-up
      • 14 Feb 2011
      • Te Papa's blog
      • We can all do with a check-up every so often – just to ensure things are going ok and we’re not falling apart. Today our team took the lid off the colossal squid tank and started to drain out the preservation fluid so we can give the colossal squid a check-up. We last had the lid off the tank in March 2009.

    • For sale: a home of the little blue penguins
      • 27 Aug 2010
      • Wellington Scoop
      • Consistency must count for something in Mayor Kerry Prendergast’s strategy, but it was conspicuous by its absence in a 24-hour period this week. On Tuesday, she honoured Forest & Bird and their project to save little blue penguins. One day later came her action to remove from city ownership and protection a piece of land that is a home for some of those same little penguins.

    • Squidward Tentacles washes up in Houghton Bay
      • 6 Aug 2010
      • Keith Johnson
      • As we all know (or at least those of us who have small children) Squidward Tentacles is an arrogant and egotistical 'octopus' who lives in an Easter Island moai and dislikes his neighbors (especially SpongeBob) for their child-like behavior. He enjoys playing the clarinet and painting self-portraits. Well, one of his close relatives washed up this rainy morning just down the road from our house at Houghton Bay. Jane helped drag it up the beach.

    • Swampy Gets Planted
      • 1 Aug 2010
      • Simon 'Swampy' Marsh
      • Saturday 31st, goodbye to July! However Saturday was all about congratulating the dedicated volunteer Coast Care group that spent three or four hours planting around Te Raekaihau Point. I was invited to help out, so kitted out with spade gloves and gummies I rolled up along with 25 or so others to plant thousands of flax, coprosma and grass. While lattes and breakfasts were being ordered around at Maraenui and Elements these guys were battling rock hard ground and wind chilly enough to freeze the bum off a penguin.

    • And you thought we were joking about the Octopus threat?
      • 25 Apr 2010
      • The Wellingtonista
      • Earlier this month we read about an octopus off the South Coast that mugged an innocent diver and took his valuable new camera. The news flashed around the world and everyone had a bit of a chuckle at the diver's expense. Not so fast, laughing boys (and girls). It turns out that this is but the latest episode in a long history of criminal behaviour by the city's cephalopod citizenry.

      • You know there's that cat you see on the way to the bus stop - the one that rolls around on the footpath and lets you tickle his belly, and you've nicknamed him Captain Choicepants? Well, that's a neighbourhood cat. Inspired by the Neighbour Cats zines, Petra Jane has created a public Google map of neighbourhood cats around Wellington and beyond.

      • Here’s proof that there were indeed Orca’s or Killer Whales in Wellington Harbour on Friday. Proof too of what a small, interconnected world we live in! This photo was sent to us by Jochen Flöthe from Kiel, Germany! Jochen’s daughter is back-packing in New Zealand and had sent family back in Germany photos of the six Orca [...]

    • Killer whales again today, Owhiro Bay
      • 12 Dec 2009
      • Te Papa's blog
      • There were killer whales (orca) hanging around Wellington harbour yesterday – as reported by Anton van Helden, Te Papa’s marine mammal specialist. More killer whales were seen this morning, though I’d don’t know if they are  the same animals. After a txt from Anton I raced down to the South Coast at Owhiro Bay, not far [...]

The contract for the running of the Zoo's cafe came up last October, and, as co-owner John Heald said... We were under the impression it wouldn't have been a problem and were waiting for the paperwork to come through ... But no!
