    Dawn of a New Age; the Prosser Era begins!

    • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > After yesterdays incredibly exciting news regarding Wynton Rufer’s nascent arrival at the club, today sees the dawn of a new era for the Island Bay United 1st team under the watchful eye of new coach James Prosser. James’ reign begins today with a pre-season warm-up against Palmerston North Red Sox at Wakefield Park at 3:45pm. James has brought an incredibly optimistic mood to the club due to both his personal positivity and also in securing the services of former club legends like Caleb Hilbron, not to mention connecting us with the aforementioned international footballing genius Wynton Rufer. In paraphrasing Churchill, James imparted: “This is not the beginning of the end nor is it the end of the beginning, no, it is the beginning of the beginning” If you have some spare time today why not come down to Wakefield and bask in the windless balmy weather… you may just be witnessing the birth of a reformation with a renaissance to follow.   Learn more about James here

    Masters Registrations open for 2020

    • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > Masters football registration is now open! Inviting existing and new masters players to join the fastest growing area of Island Bay United! Costs are $285 per player for the season, and we have 5 confirmed teams, ranging from Masters 2 to Masters 5. Each team has a minimum squad of 16 players, although most will carry a few more to allow for injuries and player unavailability. Many existing players are local fathers of our junior members or long time friends of the club. Teams also range from competitive to social, but all teams have a great culture and want to go out and have some fun on the pitch on a Saturday afternoon. New players are welcome as we are trying to build a new team this year, so feel free to contact our Masters Coordinator Rod Lawson. You may have played in the past, have been wanting to give football a go or just wanting to get back into doing something active on the weekends. Let us know a little about yourself and what you are wanting out of Masters football when you contact Rod. Sill not sure, come down for one of the social training runs on a Wednesday night or Sunday morning to have a kick and make a call from there! if you are a returning player, please register online at MyComet and you will be allocated to your team separately.

Parent representatives are Chris Roberts, Deanne Daysh, Ariana Tikao, Crane Amaru, and Kasey McDonnell.  Charlene Aramoana continues in her role as staff representative.  Mrinali Kumar and Devin Pike are our student representatives for 2016. At the first meeting, Ganesh Nana was co-opted back onto the board and re-elected as Chairperson for the duration of 2016.  This is in order to ensure a smooth transition for the new board. Meeting Dates 27 July, 22 August, 19 September, 17 October, 21 November 2016 at 6.15pm in the Staffroom at WHS. You are welcome to attend any of these meetings

Please let him know if you want to help.  Matairangi Fun Run, 23 February Hataitai Velodrome,  Open to the public, the Matairangi Fun Run, based on Mount Victoria, runs over the iconic Vosseler Shield course. There are two race options: the One Loop Race (5 km); or the Two Loop Race (two 5 km loops, adding up to 10 km). Each loop has approximately 190 metres of elevation. McVilly Shield Relay, 7 March, Karori Park The McVilly Shield is the first club event for the season and a great way to get to know other people in the club. This relay has teams of three people each. Everyone can participate, runners, walkers, J Team, seniors, masters and friends of the club. Just turn up and we will find you a team. You can either race it or use it as an opportunity to do some training.  Each team must do ten laps of Karori Park. No individual team member can do more than four laps. But you can do the laps in any order you like. The race is randomly handicapped after the teams start. Notices Join this week and save $20 or more Join or re-join Wellington Scottish at Round the Bays this year and you get $20 off your new season of Scottish full adult membership (down from $185 to $165). Farewell to Andrew Savage, Deputy Principal On Tuesday, we farewelled Andrew Savage who has been one of our Deputy Principals since 2012. Andrew leaves WHS to take up a post at the Teaching Council and their gain is most certainly WHS’s loss. Many staff took the opportunity to speak at Andrew’s farewell, recognising his many qualities and numerous contributions to WHS and enjoying musical contributions from Fritz Wollner and Andrew himself.     Safer Internet Day #SID2019 – 5 February 2019 This week marked international Safer Internet Day 2019 so we thought we would share some new resources from Netsafe. Ranger, Sue Lum notes that “The calibre of applicants was extremely high and it was a privilege to meet such passionate and articulate young people during the interview process.” Gwen and her sister Ursula have established WHS’ first eco group through the Jane Goodall Institute Roots and Shoots program. They have invited speakers to WHS and organized a group of students to attend the Predator Control Workshop at EBIS on Thursday 1st March. Their latest initiative is to reduce and replace the use of wasteful plastic bags through direct action at school and in the community (using Boomerang Bags see below). We are fortunate to have such eco leaders and conservation minded students in our school and whanau.

St John’s is showing this work both to showcase it as a fascinating artwork and to offer an opportunity for the wider Wellington community to connect with St Johns, seeing our Church and what we do as well the art. What’s happening? The prefabs are here! In a much anticipated event, four prefab classrooms were lowered in to place on the school field last weekend. These four classrooms will provide more space on campus and will be important as the school moves through the master planning process. There is still some work to do onsite and we anticipate that they will be in use from the first day of Term 3. Outdoor Education This week Year 11 students have been out on the water to Makaro (Ward Island). Students participated in a beach clean up and spent time looking at the habitats of Little Blue Penguins. The fact that students were able to observe seals and penguins on the rocks and in the water was a real bonus.   Art      This week we share stunning landscapes painted by Ms Peters’ Year 10 Art class.      Year 13 took advantage of the winter sun and fine colours to work outdoors. Āwhina Āwhina is our Thursday homework club which takes place in the Library every week. This popular, supportive environment is one where students can come for support with assignments and homework, thanks to the dedicated teachers who regularly give up their time after school each week. MyKindo As recently reported, the cafeteria has adopted the mykindo app to facilitate easy pre-order and contactless payment for food. To support those using the mykindo app, the attached guide provides information on the different methods you can use to top up your account.   Achievements  NZ Online Mathematical Olympiad Well done to Ruby Nicolson and Lias Morris who achieved marks which placed them in the top 10 in the NZ Online Mathematical Olympiad. Ruby and Lias are both in year 9. From the careers desk Virtual Careers Expo — 18-19 June Even in unusual times like these, our students still have important decisions to make about their futures. Next week, a number of NZ’s top providers come together to give you a Careers’ Expo experience, virtually! Attendees will have full access to the Virtual Expo Hall, where you can interact with exhibitors, ask questions, and access useful resources that will help you choose the right path. Easter Extravaganza Animal Night When: Friday 15th April Time: 5:30pm to 7:30pm Where: Newtown animal centre Kids aged 6 to 16 years are invited to come along and learn all about bunnies and how to care for them. School Boards of Trustees are a central part of New Zealand’s schools. Together the Board and Principal form the leadership team of the school. The Board is a governance body, focussing on the vision and strategic direction of the school while the Principal leads the management of the school, making the operational decisions to implement strategy. Being a school trustee is an important role that needs people with a range of skills and experiences and in order that the Board reflects our community, ideally we want a good balance of gender, ethnicity and skills.  At Wellington High School, the Board of Trustees work to promote the culture and ethos of Wellington High School. We  focus on student achievement and support educational opportunities for all students in our school.  If you are interested in becoming a member of the Board of Trustees you should be prepared to make a contribution to the work of the Board, to act as part of a governance team, have the skills to ask the right questions and be prepared to participate in making decisions. Specific skills are not a requirement, however governance experience, financial management and legal skills are useful.  We would like to really encourage people to put their names forward to be nominated for election to our school board.     • Things I learnt whilst collecting at New World Miramar this week … They have Free WiFi You can use free wet wipes to clean the trolley handle before you start shopping You can dispose of your plastic bags for recycling Peter Croft’s favourite fruit is oranges at the de Kids still get a free slice of luncheon at the deli There are 110 white tiles in each section of the floor 1kg of pre-packed lemons cost $4.99 To ensure you have clean hands there is a hand sanitiser in the vege section – on the left One guy from USA has lived here for 3 years and only just discovered we have 10 cent coins There is a guy in Miramar who views shopping as the least favourite thing to do If you forget your grocery bag, you might be able to borrow a boomerang bag. There is a typo in the sign Thanks, see you soon (Can you spot it? Ask Lucy and she will agree with me!) One thing I did notice was a family who tied their dog up outside while they did their shopping. I wonder if anyone asked the dog what he wanted his life to look like – to be in a loving family but not able to come and go freely, or to live in the wild and not be loved? This Sunday we will consider where we find ourselves – how do we measure up with what we want? – and how can we prepare ourselves for what is just ahead of us? See you Sunday. Pastor Dave

Your wide-ranging achievements in all areas of school life bring to mind the whakatauki which Dominic quoted in his Principal’s speech: Tangata ako ana i te kāenga, te tūranga ki te marae, tau ana – A person nurtured in the community contributes strongly to society. He Kākano visit to Island Bay Marine Education Centre  On Tuesday students from He Kākano caught the bus to the Island Bay Marine Education Centre-Bait House Aquarium. Victor Anderlini showed us around. He has been working there for a long time.   We got to touch the marine creatures in the Touch Tank, that was really fun. We fed the big fish in the large tanks and watched the octopus squeeze itself through small holes drilled in the interior wall of the aquarium. Papa Taiao Earthcare On Monday morning Caleb Anderson O’Brien and Nicholas Maloney from the WHS Papa Taiao sustainability and enterprise course were on RNZ’s ‘Nine to Noon’ programme. They were interviewed about their enterprise which reuses old real estate signs to make tracking tunnels to monitor pests and native animals. So far they have successfully sold more than 150 tunnels to DOC and Predator Free Wellington so far. To listen to the full interview, click here.   Achievements Powering Potential success Congratulations to Year 12, Lydia Acton who has been selected for the Royal Society’s ‘Powering Potential 2019’ to be held in Wellington from 16-18 December. Lydia is one of 40 students nationally who have been selected for this programme. Powering Potential gives students in Year 12 and 13, who are passionate about science and technology, the opportunity to work in teams to tackle scientific issues. Lydia, with her experience of captaining the New Zealand IYNT team in Georgia this year, is someone who we know will thrive in this environment. Sport Netball Meeting  On Wednesday, 13 November at 5.30pm  the Netball Committee are holding a meeting in the school staffroom. The meeting is for all parents who are interested in finding out about the 2020 Netball season, meeting the Netball committee and knowing what they do to make the netball season fun smoothly.  All are welcome and we look forward to meeting as many of you as possible. AWD Swimming Our He Kākano students competed in the annual AWD swimming competition. Rohan Lane-Turnbull and Dominique Gilling placed first in the 25m and 50m freestyle. We had a joint relay with Naenae college, with Rohan and Gregory Stewart swimming the 100m relay and the joint team won.        Careers  How to describe skills in your CV Are you looking for a job for the summer? Open Evening and 2021 enrolment We welcomed over 400 families and whānau to our open evening last Monday on what was possibly the coldest night of the year. Our team of student and staff guides took tours around the campus, students were actively involved in promoting different areas of school life, and everywhere was alive and buzzing with activity. Enrolments are now open for 2021. Our enrolment process starts online at: https://portal.whs.school.nz/index.php/enrolment. Instrumental and vocal lessons update If your Junior student is interested in taking instrumental / vocal lessons but has not yet enrolled, please download the form from the Student Hub and hand in or email the completed form to Fritz Wollner Lessons will be reorganised for Terms 3 and 4. If students have not been attending regularly, they need to see Mr Wollner as soon as possible to ensure they do not lose their spot. Tamatha Paul – lunchtime lecture The Feminist Club was delighted to welcome Wellington Councillor Tamatha Paul to deliver this Thursday’s lunchtime lecture. Tamatha (Ngāti Awa / Waikato Tainui) was first elected to Council in 2019 and is one of three Pukehīnau / Lambton Ward counsellors for 2019-2022. As an independent candidate, Tamatha campaigned on issues including zero waste, connecting communities and the importance of prioritising future facing leadership. As can be seen from these pictures, Tamatha’s visit attracted a large audience, keen to welcome and listen to her.         Year 10 Computing – Photoshop and political discourse Students in Gus Donaldson’s Year 10 computing course have been developing skills in Photoshop through working on a project on the theme of political discourse. Their work is currently on display in the foyer outside the library. The posters, with the narrative from their creators alongside them, are powerful pieces of work that clearly exemplify the students’ views and response to current issues in the world around them. The display will remain in place at the start of Term 3 and you are invited to come and view it.              WHS Ink – Junior Art club zine 30 Year 9 and 10 students have been working on their own artwork during each week’s WHS Ink sessions. Coordinated by Teacher Aide, Connor Morrison-Mills, this group of talented students’ work is now included in their very own zine. Click on the image below to see more. Outdoor Education’s snowy tramp It has been cold enough for many this week, with the storms and freezing winds around Wellington. The Outdoor Education students showed their mettle by heading out on a tramp in the Tararua range earlier this week. They made it as far as the Powell Hut before the weather conditions made it too risky to continue and they turned back.              Achievements He Kākano – AWD Tenpin Bowling On Thursday 2 July, He Kākano students competed in the annual AWD Tenpin Bowling competition against students from other Wellington colleges. All students and staff had a fantastic time and there were some really strong bowlers in the group. The top three WHS students were Talib Prime, Darius Ngature and Joshua Nathan.              Roxy5 finalists ‘En Passant Films’ and ‘Look Away’ are both WHS finalists in the Roxy5 film competition this year. Screenings will take place on Friday 31 July at the Mclaurin Theatre, Victoria University. The winner will be announced at the Red Carpet awards evening at the Roxy Cinema on Wednesday 5 August. We are waiting eagerly to to see whether The Work of An Artist (En Passant Films) or Hey Cassie (Look Away) will scoop a place. Sports Boys 1st XI Football On 27 June, our boys 1st XI football team beat Newlands College 4-0, taking them to the top of their pool. This Saturday the team will play St Patrick’s second team. If the team win or draw they will go into play-offs on 18 July against either Onslow College or Wellington College for a place in the Youth Premier Reserve. Good luck team!

    • In this newsletter:     Race report: WDHS Rd 2 - Karori     Juvie & Duel Slalom Track Opening     South Coast Kids Track Update     Draft Suburban Reserves Management Plan     WDHS Round 3 - Maidstone     WORD Bike-a-Polooza     Escape from Mt Crawford Mini Enduro     Klunkers, Chainless & Kids Bike Dual Slalom     Trail Building Updates Wellington Downhill Series Round 2 - Karori The second race in the Wellington Downhill Series went down last month on the revitalised 98DH aka K-Hole. Historically, racing at this venue has been in the wet, and under these conditions simply getting a bike down the track becomes a game of survival. But on this occasion, Karori turned it on for riders. At the end of racing - Daniel Meilink took out the Open Men category ahead of Michael Mells and Bryn Dickerson. In Masters 1 & 2 - Nathan Timoko and Ali Quinn claimed the top spots respectively. And the juniors were dominated by the Macdonalds - with Finlay taking out under 17 and brother Lachie, under 15. Current National Champ Sarah Atkin recorded a very respectable time that would have put her just outside top 10 in Open Men, and Finn van Leuven also put down a solid time in Hardtail. We’ll catch everyone at the final WDHS round this Saturday, 6th December at Maidstone. Race Results & Series Points Juvie & Duel Slalom Grand Opening Crews and contractors have been hard at work at Miramar of the past months and we’ve recently seen the completion of two new tracks - Juvenile Delinquent, and the Kids Duel Slalom. The sum of these, combined with the pump track and dirt jumps is a great zone for kids and beginners to hone their skills, only minutes from the City. The grand opening of Juvie and the Kids Duel Slalom last weekend was a huge success. About 150 people turned up to mark the occasion on Sunday, including City Councillors and Mayor, Celia Wade Brown. Once the tape was cut, Mayor Celia spoke positively of the Club’s recent work at Miramar and Island Bay. South Coast Kids Track Wins Another Award You may recall that earlier this year, the Club received a Wellington Airport Community Award for its work on the South Coast Kids Track. Well last week the Kids Track did it again - this time at the 2014 NZ Recreation Association Awards. The annual awards recognise excellence in the recreation and leisure industry, and the South Coast Kids Track was named Most Outstanding Project. Thanks once again to Wellington City Council, Trail Fund NZ, Bike Wellington, Revolve Cycling and Southstar Trails.  Draft Suburban Reserves Management Plan Submissions close this Friday 5th on the WCC Draft Suburban Reserves Management Plan. This is the last opportunity members of the public will have to share their views on the future management of Wellington’s suburban reserves - between Khandallah and Miramar (including Makara). This plan will have a significant impact on the future of mountain biking in our city, and the planning process only comes around once every 10 years. So, if you have a few spare minutes and a desire to see the WCC supporting mountain biking in our suburban reserves, get in there.   Upcoming Events WDHS Round 3 - Maidstone - THIS SATURDAY The final round of the 2014 Wellington Downhill Series will take place THIS SATURDAY, 6th December at Maidstone, Upper Hutt. WORD Bike-a-Polooza - Sunday Dec 7th This Sunday at the Wainuiomata Trails - WORD invites you to join them for the first Bike-a-Polooza - New Zealand's best, super fun, and raddest kids mountain bike event ever! There will be four great courses to choose from on the day - so something for all the 3-17 year olds. Cost: $15 individual, $40 family of 3 kids. For more info and online registration check out WORD Bike-a-Polooza Escape from Mt Crawford Mini Enduro - Jan 19th, 2015 The third annual Escape from Mt Crawford Mini Enduro is upcoming - Wellington Anniversary weekend, January 19th. We’ve run the annual fundraiser for the Miramar Track Project for the past couple of years, and 2015 will undoubtedly be the biggest yet. As per last year, we’ll be running two classes - Misdemeanor and Felony, plus the Sufferfest hill climb, and we’re throwing in a Kids Mini D for the little rippers. Also, in breaking news - Yeastie Boys have just come on board as a sponsor. This is great news if you like beer.   Online entries opening later this month Event Details >> Klunkers, Chainless & Kids Bike Dual Slalom - Jan 24th, 2015 After a successful event earlier this year, Klunkers is back! The aim of the race is simple: dig out your old kit and 90s race weapon, do as many timed runs of Jailbrake as your body (or bike) will permit within 2 ½ hours, and heckle like you’ve never heckled. There will be four categories: Klunkers, Chainless, proKlunkers and Klunkers (under 12), and an additional Kids Bike Dual Slalom race. Entry is by donation of old (useful) bike parts, cash, or your bike. All proceeds go to Biketech and the Mechanical Tempest. Event Details >> Trail Building Updates Clinical (Polhill Reserve) As you may recall from the last Polhill update, The Brooklyn Trail Builders reported significant progress on Clinical. When it’s complete, the track will round off a grand loop of the Reserve. Most of the track is now rideable, and it’s set for completion sometime during early 2015. Currently, contractors are finishing construction of bridges on the trail, and volunteers are working on approximately 200m at the bottom. Although this section is incomplete, there’s a steep track that can be used to bypass it. The next dig is this coming Sunday, 7th December at 3pm. Details over at Brooklyn Trail Builders. There will be an event to commemorate the official opening of Clinical, tentatively around April 2015. We’ll keep you posted. We would also like to congratulate BTB whose work was this week recognised at the Roll on Wellington Cycle Awards. Mt Victoria Thanks to all those who contributed recently to the Mt Victoria trail user survey. We’re currently compiling the results, but feedback was largely positive. In case you missed it - here’s the full rundown. But in short, the WCC has requested that changes be made to the lower part of the Super D line. The Club, in consultation with trail leaders and the Council, has come up with a plan that involves essentially realigning the trail, from the SPCA south. In addition, the plan includes work around busy junctions to reduce the risk of conflict with other trail users. No major work will take place on Mt Victoria until the new year. MSP have recruited well this season particularly in the backs and welcomed some Hurricanes experience in the Proctor brothers to the starting line-up. It was old-timers day for MSP and a fair few of the older members had turned out to their clubrooms to preload! Conditions The weather was fine with the wind blowing diagonally down the pitch from the north into the south-eastern corner where the field dips away a little. the sun was low in the first half and difficult for OBU to deal with playing into it from the southeastern corner. It would be even worse for MSP in the second half. OBU was playing from Gym end toward the road in the first half. John ‘JC’ Cable & Jaesen Sumner were kindly present to keep an eye on the play while I wrestled with the screen lock on my phone. We are positioned up beside the video platform on the northern side. Notable performances The front row was mighty but didn’t really get the rewards it may have felt entitled to. The lineout applied lots of pressure and caused plenty of mistakes from MSP Paddy Carter was immense around the field. He is becoming a valuable utility player covering locks and flanks and is certainly a lineout option with outstanding aerial skills whichever position he is in. Shamus and Caleb deserve a mention every week. Hardworking, rugged and abrasive all over the park. In the backs, Sam Reid was once again rock-solid barely making a mistake. Ty Poe is a consistent performer growing each week. Callum and Dale are a great pairing of skill, speed and determination. Kyle really stood up in this match and had several classy touches including the chip and regather for the try. How the game unfolded 2 mins The tone for the match was set early scrum-wise by OBU. A powerful shunt spoilt the MSP feed which resulted in a knock-on in the backline due to the backfoot ball. 5 mins A series of pick and goes near the MSP line in the left corner resulted in a penalty to OBU. Dale steps up and nails the shot on the 22m line about 15 in from the left touchline OBU 3-0 6 mins From the kick-off there is a penalty for a high shot on Paddy. The penalty kick doesn’t find touch. The kick is followed up well enough to pressure MSP whop are finally able to clear to the touch after a couple of minor wobbles. 9 mins MSP manages to get it wide to their left side close to the touchline in front of us. The MSP player makes a great burst upfield but eventually, it breaks down and we go back to the penalty the ref was playing advantage for. The shot is successfully taken from 35 metres out and just to the right of the posts. 3-3 13 mins MSP puts up an up and under (or ‘Gary Owen’ for the northerners), then they regain at the ensuing ruck and the halfback chips downfield. Sam Reid has no choice but to run it into touch near our line on the far side of the paddock. From the lineout MSP throw is not straight so OBU gets to clear from the scrum. Pressure diffused for now. 17 mins MSP sets up a driving maul from a lineout but OBU gets the drive on. The maul breaks up with MSP players in behind our forwards. MSP flanker and halfback both have a dab at the line but it’s the right-winger who busts through for the score. The conversion misses. MSP 8-3 20 mins OBU charge down an MSP clearing kick. Ty Poe claims the loose ball and scores it under the sticks. The conversion was successful. OBU 10-8 23 mins A great move from OBU down the left-hand side of the field, Shamus makes lots of ground commits the defence and sets Paddy for the pass but it goes behind Paddy. MSP runs it out. There is a brief altercation. The Assistant Referee puts his flag out and a discussion ensues with the ref. The referee calls the captains together and presumably issues a warning to both teams to keep it clean despite what looked like a punch thrown by the red player. 24 mins Kyle darts down the blindside and chips past the first line of defence. He regathers under pressure from 3 defenders and scoots the rest of the way down the far sideline to score it in the corner. Conversion unsuccessful. OBU 15-8 28 mins Shamus crashes through the defence with some good pace and offloads to Finbarr. Reece ratchets up the pressure with an attack down the close touchline. OBU is right on the MSP goal line but are penalised. Can’t tell from our position what it was for. Unfortunately, someone says something to the ref so we deservedly get marched 10 metres. 30 mins OBU is in MSPs half again and looking likely but are penalised for holding on in the tackle. Good play from MSP flanker to beat the cleaners to the ball. MSP kick into the far corner. From the lineout MSP over-throw the ball and Kyle makes a great 40-meter clearance. 39 mins MSP is penalised for backs offside. Callum steps up to have a long-range shot from just inside the MSP half and out to the left. Kick misses Halftime OBU 15-8 41 mins MSP on the attack, OBU backs are caught offside 35 metres out and slightly to the right of the posts. Kick landed OBU 15-11 46 mins A long sequence of pick and goes on the MSP line. An MSP player crashes over the top believing he is onside and concedes a very obvious penalty. Dale successfully takes the shot. OBU 18-11 49 mins OBU concede a penalty for holding near the 10-metre line straight out in front. Kick is successfully taken. OBU 18-14 52 mins Paddy claims the kickoff with a memorable AFL-style leap. 55 mins OBU move the ball wide to Sam Reid who slips through the first tackle but can’t get through the second and eventually the ball runs into touch. MSP again overthrow the lineout. Morgan tries to gather the ball but knocks it on. MSP feed to the scrum. 57 mins MSP manages to clear the scrum which is under pressure and begin a promising period of attack near the OBU line. OBU player gest over the ball and wins the penalty which is cleared to touch taking some of the pressure off but we lose the lineout. Matt Fowler makes it on for his 50th replacing Kyle Preston at the base of the scrum. Sam Godwin on James Poloniati Off 60 mins A great driving maul from OBU. Eventually, MSP concedes the penalty and OBU elects to kick to the corner. Another great driving maul and an MSP forward rolls the dice by dropping it and gets away with it this time. Eventually, OBU knocks the ball forward. 63 mins MSP clear their line from a massive kick by James Proctor playing at 2nd 5. He kicked from the 5-meter line and the ball eventually goes out just on OBUs side of halfway. 66 mins Almost an action replay with another great clearing kick from Proctor. 73 mins MSP are hot on the attack and looking dangerous. There is an OBU player down. It turns out to be Matt Fowler in his 50th. Kyle comes on to replace him as a precaution. Morgan comes back on sporting a bandage on his head. I missed where he went off! Sam Coombs leaves the field. Taine Plumtree is replaced by Josh Gimblett 75 mins There is a series of Pick and goes on our line. Eventually #19 James Tuia crashes over. Conversion unsuccessful. MSP 19-18 75 mins Sam Coombs is on for Finbarr Kerr-Newell and somewhere along the way Matt Sleith came on at hooker for Kenan Gillson. OBU just need to hold the ball and work it back up the field to get in position to pressure MSP into a mistake. OBU puts the drive on from a lineout but the ball is knocked on. 78 mins OBU desperate now tries to run it out to the other end of the field but MSP turn the ball over in our 22 and the 1st 5 for MSP lines up and slots the drop goal. MSP 22-18 That’s the way the match ended. A riveting game with a very tight finish. I get the feeling that this match could well be replayed over the coming weeks in a semi or a final, but let’s not count our chickens just yet. Another almighty challenge awaits against Tawa out at Lyndhurst Park next week.     Northern Premier 1 Teams End the Year On a High

    • <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > A cold, wet NUHC Prem 1 Women’s team after their 5-6 playoff with Karori In an interesting twist, the Northern Premier 1 Men and Women’s teams have both ended their 2019 seasons ranked fifth equal. The Northern P1 Women, in their first year in the competition after possibly a 30 year hiatus, had an exceptional year under the guidance of coach David McNaughtan. With several wins under their belt in their first season, the women made their way into the 5-6th playoffs. In a match which was marred by torrential rain throughout, the Northern women fought to the end against Karori. The turf was underwater for most of the game, but with less than 10 minutes remaining, and with the scores tied 4-4, the rain became too heavy and the umpires called the game off. This left a very cold, wet, but relieved team fifth equal with Karori. The men’s competition was similarly affected by the weather, however it was the Saturday earlier that affected the men. Their penultimate match against Victoria University was unable to start due to heavy rain and hail that put the turf under several inches of water. The game was rescheduled for a midweek late night game. The disruption put pressure on both teams, with the match being the most stressful of the year for coach Jono Mackey and his team. A tit-for-tat scoreline kept the pressure on Northern, but the Northern strikers and excellent keeping by Cameron Loader kept them in the game. The Northern boys ended up triumphing 3-2 over the students, keeping them out of the relegation zone and putting them through to the 5-6 playoff. A death in the Wellington Indians hockey community unfortunately meant that the the 5-6 playoff against Wellington Indians Sports Club was unable to be played. Despite the unfortunate reason for cancellation, the Northern boys were relieved to end the year fifth equal. <figure class=" sqs-block-image-figure intrinsic " > NUHC Premier 1 Men after their final match of the season against Victoria University.

(b)    Junior Surf - Sunday is Junior Surf day during the season from October to March.  Preparation for Sunday sessions is essential with a keen eye for detail.  You will need to assemble a ‘sign-in’ team to – 1.    Manage and maintain the Junior sign in sheets; 2.    Undertake second hand clothing sales; 3.    Ensure clothing samples are available; and 4.    Assist with clothing orders when necessary.  5.    Ensure lanes are booked at WRAC for the 200m Badge and Pool Champs. 6.    Manage the 200m badge process. As we are in the business of saving lives and not risking them, swimming skills go hand-in-hand with surf life saving. Therefore we require Junior Surf members to attain this award so they can satisfy the mandatory requirement to compete with paddle boards in the Junior Surf Carnivals. A safety requirement is that children aged 9-13 years (U10 - U14 age group) must be proficient swimmers and have a 200 metre safety badge. This is advisable for U9s but compulsory from age 9 (Under 10s).  In view of the beach environment in which our activities are carried out, every effort should be made to ensure that all children have some swimming proficiency. It is expected that as children progress through their age groups, their swimming ability increases.  Children are not taught to swim at ‘Junior Surf’ Sunday beach sessions. Life Saving is an aquatic sport and it is strongly recommended that children participate in swimming lessons. Pool swimming is essential to develop the strength, fitness and confidence that they require to negotiate surf conditions. Children who swim regularly prove to be the most capable in the surf and ultimately gain the most from participating in a Junior Surf programme. The 200m safety award must be refreshed every year. His last substantial work was a comic opera based on two characters from Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Mercurial and bright, the overture captures the essence of an opera Berlioz described as “a caprice written with the point of a needle”. Michael Houstoun and Orchestra Wellington have enjoyed a long and fruitful artistic relationship. Music Director Marc Taddei calls the intelligence and clarity that Houstoun brings to his musicmaking “a perfect fit for the Bartók”. The Third Piano Concerto is Bartók’s most lyrical, full of whimsical and beguiling melodies influenced by Hungarian folk music. Bartók wrote it as a gift for his wife, Ditta, who was also a concert pianist. In keeping with the Orchestra’s 2016 theme of final masterworks, the concerto is truly Bartók’s “last word,” written during the illness that claimed his life. Tchaikovsky’s greatest gifts shine in his last ballet, the Nutcracker. His ability to write unforgettable melodies is matched by orchestration that clothes them in their most attractive colours. The Nutcracker is filled with the impulse to move, and its music understands everything about how a human body might express grace, power and emotion. With its fantastic scenes and dramatic montages, this is music that brings the imagination to life. For the fourth time, the Orchestra will celebrate its partnership with Hutt Valley’s Sistema youth orchestra Arohanui Strings by inviting them onstage to perform with them. The pieces include the Finale from Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings (in honour of the Orchestra’s Last Words theme), Purcell’s Rondo from the Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra and a few other miniature gems. This partnership performance is the highlight of the year for many of the Sistema families, says Arohanui Strings  director Alison Eldredge. “We are very grateful for OW’s support as well as for the  pizza, smiles and encouragement our young players receive on this special occasion.” www.orchestrawellington.co.nz
