    • Director’s Message: The little festival that could
      • I am very relieved to be writing this. We did it! Verb Readers & Writers Festival happened and we are now looking back and feeling incredibly lucky. It wasn’t the Festival we planned but what a magical time in our history it turned out to be. Thanks to our incredible audiences it was a near sell out and the atmosphere throughout was one of delighted disbelief giving way to heartwarming connection. I think many of us couldn’t quite believe the festival was real until it was nearly over. We had spent so many months planning, unpinning, re-planning and then planning for the plan to fall over again.

    • Seriously good.
      • There's a great line in a Simpsons episode (well there's a plethora of them really) when C. Montgomery Burns is viewing the less-than-flattering nude portrait of him which Marge has painted. In his typically non-plussed manner, he states "I don't know much about art, but I know what I hate; and I don't hate this."Now, I don't profess to know much about art either, but Adagio-Seriously Sophisticated Circus had me enthralled and not thinking about hate one bit. From the opening minute, when each of the performers was introduced to the audience in a sequence which had us in a quandry as to which performer to focus on, to the mirror-image closure, I was amazed, amused, and just plain entertained in a way that I'm not generally accustomed to. But I liked it. A lot.Without being able to properly dissect the performance, to verbalise the nuances of the techniques deployed, or even identify the performers correctly, I'll at least have a crack and break it down to a Monty Burns-esqe critique. Adagio combines live music, comedy, pantomime, dance and most of all (as the name implies) amazing feats of gymnastic ability on an array of 'equipment' (chairs, swings, ropes etc). The two main protagonists were a diminutive male and a blonde female whose pure strength and incredible poise was so immense and impressive that you would think it looked so easy, but then you'd digest what they were doing and imagine trying to do it yourself, summising with a mental "no way!". This was my second experience at Downstage, after the also brilliant Strike earlier this year, and if the quality of these two shows is an indicator of the fare on offer, then I can see myself making more regular visits. And I'd recommend that everyone should get along and experience Adagio... it's been extended, so there's no reason not too.       • Zephyr FC Manager Steve Hall said today that he was not happy with the increasing number of fixtures Rovers had scheduled for Shed 6. "It's no secret our that Rovers prefer the Shed of Dreams (pictured) as out preferred venue, probably something to do with that 10 - 0 drubbing we got in Shed 6 only six weeks ago" said Hall.

      • Lizzie has arrived! Thanks to many generous donations, she was trucked down from Auckland yesterday and is now on the hard at Evans Bay, stirring up a great deal of interest. Before long, she will be sitting on the slipway at Clyde Quay for her restoration, no more than 20 feet away from where she was built 101 years ago.

      • You may well have noticed already, but an interesting little spat is brewing to enliven the local body elections next year. Apparently, the Mayor Her Worship Kerry Prendergast is being persuaded to run again, as no valid alternatives are coming forward. I find that hard to believe, and note with interest that Bob Jones, as part of Vibrant Wellington, is making moves.

    • Announcing 24 - the meet
      • 24 is a new type of swim meet. 10 teams, each with 24 members in 3 age groups. $500 will be awarded to the winning team on the night. The meet will be held at WRAC on 1 May 2010. It will be fast paced, there’ll be no timekeepers (just the electronic timing), lots of noise and music. It’s sure to be fun.
