    • Rethinking the airport barrier
      • Despite being surrounded by high hills, Wellington is fortunate to have an international airport that is under 10km from its CBD, with flight approaches over Cook Strait to the south and just missing the Newland hills to the north. The drawback is the runway which forms a major physical barrier over 2km long between the city and the airport terminal and the growing population of over 20,000 residents who live east of the airport on Miramar Peninsula.

    • Affordable housing in the CBD – a pipe dream
      • Partly as a byproduct of the Spatial Plan and partly because of the real-world challenge of trying to find well-priced housing in an increasingly expensive city, the current debates are tending to polarise into the people who want to preserve heritage and the people who want a sensibly-priced place to live. Both ambitions are laudable – but in Wellington, it may well be that “affordable” is not one of the feasible options, no matter how many ratty old flats we demolish.

    • Thank god that's over
      • I can't claim to speak for all the Wellingtonista, but I have to say it: Sevens weekend is horrible. There's a lot of gushy talk in the main media outlets about how colourful and vibrant and alive the city becomes, but one could say the same about a nasty fungal rash. Many of us who live in the central city can attest to how colourful and vibrant and alive the city is most of the time, and in an a

    • Review: Lucrece
      • An adaptation of Shakespeare’s narrative poem “The rape of Lucrece” by Binge Culture Collective. It’s a visual+audio installation at the Toi Poneke Gallery plus a live performance on Thursday and Friday evenings. Fiona McNamara’s director’s note states “This production of Shakespeare’s poem claims the text, written by a man in a patriarchal society, as a woman’s story and investigates what happens to performance and to an audience when the female body is present and the male body is absent.”

    • Visiting old friends…
      • I feel like I’ve been visiting old friends this week, while I wait for some new ones to arrive. A Deluxe cafe cookie, a Nikau brunch, a Zibibbo platter, and a Capitol breakfast (can you tell it was a teenage-free weekend??). My cookie at Deluxe was enlivened by an interesting discussion with a fellow customer […] The post Visiting old friends… appeared first on The Wellingtonista.

    • Rough Stuff
      • Wellington Indoor Sports announced yesterday that Zephyr Rovers was one of the teams to watch when they described Rovers as one of eight teams that pop up in referee reports about teams. "I was flabbergasted" said Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall "we're a pretty clean team since Charlie and Chris left and whilst we've had the odd discussion with a referee, I can't recall it ever being abusive". Hall said he was even more perplexed when hearing that "that guy with the grey beard is your worst offender".

    • 2020 Port Nicholson Regatta – You Were Here!
      • What a sensational Port Nicholson Regatta! With over 170 Sailors and 30 boats on the water, including over half a dozen visiting boats with 4 Sports Boats from Auckland, RPNYC delivered an event members can be proud of! The Port Nicholson Regatta opened with the Lawson’s Dry Hills Charity Cup Race on Thursday, followed by a convivial Regatta Dinner and presentations to Britannia Sea Scouts, Wellington Free Ambulance, and Live Ocean. It provided opportunity to acknowledge the fantastic support from our sponsors who help make things better and easier: Yamaha, Crombie Lockwood, Lawson’s Dry Hills, Mt Gay, Steinlager, North Sails, Burnsco, Pivotal Print, Barton Marine, Havana, Mevo, Chaffers Marina, and Whittaker’s. The event delivered three days of intensive and rewarding regatta racing in perfect weather. Impeccable race management led by John and Linda Parrish, was ably supported by our support crews and assistants. Notably Marg McVeagh, Janine Small, Julie Bate, Carole Inkster, Phil Taylor, Mel Zytecka and Ashley Owers who were out on the water for the duration of the event. Not forgetting Kim McMorran of course, for our brand new marks. After the relentless start sequence to get 44 races away in 4 divisions over three days (plus the 8 starts in the Lawson’s Dry Hills Charity Cup Race), there was silverware to award. Ross Telford Memorial Trophy (Regatta Champion) – Zimmerframe Racing Team II Div A – PHRF Shield – Kaimai Flyer Div A – General Handicap – St Laurence Div B – PHRF Shield – Zimmerframe Racing Team II Div B – General Handicap – Prime Mover Div C – General Handicap – White Cavalier Div C – PHRF Shield – Saucy Sausage Young 88 Roger Land Trophy – Whistler III Young 88 Owner / Helm – Whistler III Charity Cup – Airship Check out the website for links to the amazing photos taken by Mel Zytecka over the three days (while laying marks!). Look out for a debrief and review of the 2020 Port Nicholson Regatta in the next few weeks as we set up for 2021 Port Nicholson Regatta in 18-21 February 2021 – we’ll need some more help, if John Parrish’s challenge to the regatta fleet of bring a boat is met! Port Nicholson Regatta Director Ashley Owers extends a huge Thank You to everyone who contributed to make the 2020 Port Nicholson Regatta a success.

    • 7 Point 5 Degrees And Back
      • It's 7.5° and back, a collaborative project by Gonzalez and Wellington artist Alannah Gunter. In Linz, Austria passers-by watch a monitor inside a canal-tube (above) and are in turn watched by a webcam. Placed at 7.5° to the earth, the camera-tube is a virtual tunnel through the earth to Wellington where the live image screens nightly at the Film Archive Loading Bay. A similar camera-tube is installed in Abel Smith street; what it sees is what the Linz passers-by will see.
