      • Remember a few years ago when a bunch of punks dressed up as fairies chased the National Front guys around the Railway Station beating them up? LOLarama. Anyhow... Anti-racism activists will be holding a rally and picnic at the Wellington Cenotaph at 10am on Saturday October 25. The rally and picnic is in opposition to plans to hold a "Flag Day" rally by the "Nationalist Alliance", a coalition comprising the National Front, New Right and National Democrats. • NZTA roads explained
      • Since Scoop posted a top-secret document online, via Peter Dunn, I’ve been trying to make sense of what NZTA and the Mayors of our cities, are up to. In the end, i figured that the only way I could make sense of the discussion was to make my own maps. The lack of coordinated and articulate maps from NZTA is either deliberate, or by accident. If it is an accident, then it’s down to gross incompetence, and if it’s deliberate, then it’s simply a political desire to keep you/us in the dark. You can make your own mind up. If they won’t do it, and show us some maps, then I will. So, here are some maps. Let’s start off with an easy one: where is Transmission Gully?

    • BNU v. Lower Hutt, 0-3
      • Without a doubt this was a clash eagerly anticipated by all the BNU players. Come 2:30pm Saturday we would be playing on what was tipped to be the pitch of the season and the surface was the topic of conversation early in the week leading up to the game. But like many fields in the capital, it couldn’t cope with the consistent rain and Karori number 1 was underwater.

      • An injury-plagued Slapperz journeyed to Petone Memorial 4 to take on the Armani's. With Steve-O and Barts on the sideline nursing aches and pains, we were all hoping for an injury free match. No luck there, I'm afraid, with Gazz limping off after just 1 minute with a nasty looking recurrence of his injury. Fortunately, Striker Barts gallantly came to the rescue and played the remaining 89 minutes up front.

    • Waterfront tweaks: Taranaki St Wharf
      • As much as we Wellingtonians are happy to live in a "cold-yet-cultural" city, most of us would have to admit that this "summer" has been pretty gruelling. Which is why yesterday, with it's balmy temperatures and spectacular sunset, seemed to switch so many of us into outdoors mode for one delicious evening. Most of Waitangi Park was humming by about 5:30, but even though the lawn was relatively dry and looking sweetly bucolic with its lush grass and clover, it had attracted a grand total of eleven people, mostly on the berms around the edge.

    • Orchestra wellington’s sixth subscription concert...
      • ORCHESTRA WELLINGTON’S SIXTH SUBSCRIPTION CONCERT  “PATHETIQUE” Saturday 5 December, 7:30pm Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington Scherzo a la Russe Igor Stravinsky Piano Concerto Karlo Margetic Symphony no 6 in B Minor “Pathétique” Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Orchestra Wellington Marc Taddei, Musical Director Michael Houstoun, Piano Emma Sayers, Quarter-tone Piano Orchestra Wellington’s Tchaikovsky cycle reaches its conclusion with his final, monumental Sixth Symphony, the “Pathetique”. This is music that distils Tchaikovsky’s craft and his experience of a life lived at maximum intensity. It unfolds like a living thing, full of passion, sweetness, nostalgia and pain. The first and last movements bear the weight of sorrow and beauty in equal measure, while the central movements are filled with gossamer textures that move with balletic ease and grace. Karlo Margetic’s original commission for a piano concerto has bloomed into an exciting new double concerto featuring two soloists. Orchestra Wellington’s featured pianist this year, Michael Houstoun, is joined by Emma Sayers on a second piano. Two highly acclaimed pianists will unite in a work that highlights their distinctive voices. The concert begins with what must surely be one of Stravinsky’s lightest and liveliest pieces, Scherzo a la Russe. It was adapted from a film score that never eventuated, via a commission from jazz band-leader Paul Whiteman. The result owes a little to jazz, a little to Hollywood, and quite a lot to the kind of earthy Russian folk music he used in works like Petrouchka. Tickets from Ticketek online, box office or by calling 0800 842 538 Ticket Prices Wellington: Adult Full Price $60 Under 35, (with ID), $25 Concession (Gold Card Holder), $48 Community Services Card $12 Student (with ID) $12 Child (still at school) $10
