    • Spring Festival at the Botanic Gardens
      • Tulips, tours, art, "Crafty Fifi", the legendary Fairy Trina and more at this year's Spring Festival in the Botanic Gardens. Running from 28 September until 12 October. I can confirm that the recent (and typical for this time of year) gales have not denuded the tulip gardens & so weather permitting, Tulip Sunday on the first day of the Festival, should be a beautiful way to spend an hour or two communing with nature.

    • Fem-Cat Friday introduces Becky
      • Little 12 year old Becky came into the shelter as "Bungeye", having lost her right eye in a car accident when she was young. Becky3.jpg Our volunteers hated the name and felt that it focused on her physical issues rather than the lovely cat that she is. Normally we don't rename our cats, but so many people felt that her name just didn't do her justice that we've made an exception in this case.

    • Bus drivers, cyclists swap points of view
      • CRAIG Bush now knows what it’s like to have a 12-tonne bus bearing down on him on the road. He’s usually the one driving the bus, but in a road-awareness workshop in Kilbirnie he got to swap the safety of his driver’s seat for a cycle saddle. “I am used to having my rear vision mirrors,” he says. “Not being able to see cars until they were right behind me was intimidating.”

    • Deep water
      • The WCC Draft Annual Plan 2011/12 was out for public consultation recently. In these tight financial times the plan was generally about maintaining affordable rates through prioritising spending and reducing costs by $6 million, through reducing some services, improving the efficiency of other services and deferring non-urgent work. Although it’s not all cost cutting, there is an allowance to spend $650,000 on a feasibility study for a new deep-water pool in Kilbirnie.
