Southerly Storm Mooring Lines

- Operation Details Date/Time: Thu, 13/07/2017 - 12:15 - 15:00 Operation Type: CG Operation (good samaritan) People Assisted: 3 Total Volunteer Hours: 16 Day 2 of a major southerly storm in Wellington took it's toll on vessels moored in the channel. We initially received a callout from Police to assist a 15m catamaran who's mooring lines had broken in the main channel. Police ended up putting their own small boat in the water and assisted him. Coastguard Mana then continued on and assessed other moored vessels, finding 2 with broken bow lines. One large launch had a secondary line that was holding the vessel on the mooring, but it was very small so we added a new line to it to hold in the 50kt+ wind gusts. Runabout swamped on the beach

A wave, larger than normal, took them by surprise and swamped the boat. They were able to bail it out but by the time they had done that the waves were pushing the boat further up the beach and they were unable to get away. The dinghy davits on one vessel had caught on the stays of another and they were pushing against each other in the strong current. Coastguard Mana responded with CRV Trust Porirua Rescue to head out and tow them back to Mana Marina. They were stood down just as they were crossing the bar because another vessel in the area had responded and taken them under tow. Western Suburbs Soccer Club
- Western Suburbs is of one of New Zealand's oldest and most successful soccer clubs. In 2006, Western Suburbs Soccer Club turned 100 years of age.
