Response to Government's $100m Homelessness Announcement

- Public servants responsible for housing the homeless should consider the bigger picture. This means looking at a range of physical, psychological and relational needs, but it also means protecting and nurturing protective factors where they already exist. Being housed shouldn’t come at the expense of all the other good things in a person’s life that breed resilience and positive long-term outcomes. We want to see those who are vulnerable placed in supportive neighbourhoods, not isolated houses that merely tick the box. The government needs to rehumanise housing.

Learning to Shut Up this Election: An Ironic Reflection

- When a Pākehā New Zealander expects refugees to move to New Zealand and speak ‘our’ language, learn ‘our’ culture, participate in the jobs ‘we’ need, we’re asking them to do the very thing we couldn’t. This election I don't have all the answers so I am giving my voice to those who have been silenced.

- A wall can’t go up without a foundation of contempt for the other. A wall can’t go up in a space where there is no division. A wall can’t go up where compassion and conversation take place. Walls start in the heart, and move to brick and mortar when we normalise our division.

- What can organisations do to enable people with lesser financial resources to encourage a desire to be loving towards the natural environment? Do organisations, albeit with the best intentions, undermine this need if their services are not environmentally sustainable?

- If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time. If you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together. This will cost us our homogeneous huddles but will open our lives to a richness and beauty we all desperately yearn for deep down.
