Is a Prime Minster Entitled to a Nice House?
- Eye of the Fish
- There’s been a lot about this house in the news recently – both the paper kind of news, and the TV kind of news. May as well get my news from proper news sources while they exist, seeing as it sounds like soon nothing is going to exist in the news world. What will we do when 3News and OneNews are ditched, and Stuff has gone bust again? Its hard enough to even buy a paper these days, as increasingly nowhere sells them. What do we do in the future – just make up our own news as we go? Seems to be working fine for some people! Anyway, THIS is the house in question:

Dense Hutt
- Eye of the Fish
- In all the fun and fuss over things like the Election, the country’s love affair / hatred of Winston (there is something very 1984 about Winston being the BiG Brother watching over us / controlling our every move), we (well, me) may have taken our eye off the ball. Well, not the ball, but the Hutt. It seems that the Hutt has fully adopted the MDRS changes proposed by the Government, to the extent that all the following things, which were proposed, have now been implemented, and are now operative. This includes some revisions to the Proposed District Plan, and there are many pages that look like this (only usually more words and less diagrams).

St Gerard’s new owners
- Eye of the Fish
- Great news this week that at long last the venerable St Gerard’s monastery has been sold. Long seen as one of the true icons of Wellington architecture and the focus of many tourist snaps, St Gerard’s church was started first way back in 1908 by the catholic Redemptorists (Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer) to a design by John Swan and then added to in 1932 by an almost twin structure of monastery, poised on the flanks of Mount Victoria. It is a symbiotic pairing of the architecture of two of New Zealand’s greatest ecclesiastical architects – both John Swan and Frederick de Jersey Clere. Swan and Clere worked together, but it is rare to see their work side by side like this. More recently it has been owned by the Institute for World Evangelisation – the ICPE Mission.

Three
- Eye of the Fish
- So the Bill of Three Houses, Three Storeys, has passed. Parliament gave it the most unsexy title of all: Resource Management (Enabling Housing Supply and Other Matters) Amendment Bill. But I think the title of Three 3 Bill would have been more interesting. Certainly, the aftermath of this extraordinarily rushed legislation will be interesting. I

Fale Malae
- Eye of the Fish
- Wellington’s Waterfront is going to be quite full, or so it seems. Yesterday the WCC agreed in principle to the proposed Fale Malae being proposed for the waterfront, or at least for them to go forward to the next phase of planning. This is the same Fale that was proposed for a site up near Parliament (on Bunny St, between the Victoria School of Law in the old Government Buildings, and the VUW Business School in Rutherford House). Evidently someone has ruled that the parliamentary site was unsuitable, and so Frank Kitts Park has been proposed instead.

Appropriate height limits
- Eye of the Fish
- While it was vaguely entertaining / terrifying / gratifying / intimidating to listen to some of the 10-hour debate on the Spatial Plan the other day (pick your own adjective according to your political persuasions), what became very clear is that NO ONE – not the Mayor, not the Council Officers, Not Liam Hodgetts the City Planner, and certainly not the rabid band of Councillors – have any idea about height limits that is bounded by any semblance of the actual factual truthiness of the situation.

Heading South-East
- Eye of the Fish
- Given that everyone seems to agree that any new PT route needs to go down to Newtown to visit the Hospital (thereby removing any need for doctors, nurses and staff to have to drive to work) and then possibly the Zoo (as another main attraction) and then cross over to Kilbirnie for the large and growing population there, the Eye of the Fish decided to take a look at what may happen there.

Fresh start
- Eye of the Fish
- Meh. Bygones. I’m over it. What Wellington needs now, and seems very good at providing it, is a fresh start on an old street corner, and the corner of Abel Tasman and Cuba Street seems just the right place to do that. Wandering around this slightly forsaken part of town the other night, I hadn’t really realized just how funky and vibrant a mere street corner renovation can be. It’s not down to any particular governmental, or council idealistic drive, but just a simple effort by local entrepreneurs who want to make a difference.

Storm
- Eye of the Fish
- Well, wouldn’t you know it – the storm of the century in Wellington, and I’m not there to see it. From all accounts, it was a real doozy – I’m glad to hear that Wellington has pulled through, even if various seaside properties are minus fences and stretches of roads. Best quote for me came from that bloke in Lyall Bay, who was quoted as saying “you think you’ve got a fence, and then you don’t” which for some reason I found very funny. I was a little distressed to hear of some of my fellow fish found flapping their last across a stretch of highway though.
