    • Watch the birdie
      • This morning, the ravaged environment of Ghuznee St finally got a positive addition to the streetscape: the world's largest tui landed on a roof to feed on some equally giant kowhai blossoms. It's part of the eye-catching new signage for the Forest and Bird headquarters.

    • The Dead C are coming to town
      • I wouldn't wanna put money on it or anything, but I'm pretty sure that the last time legendary NZ noise-rockers The Dead C (wikipedia) played in Wellington was when they supported Sonic Youth on their Dirty tour in 1993. And to be frank, with an utterly transcendant performance in the face of much tribulation, mopped the floor with them. Now they're playing at the City Gallery on Saturday night. It's free. What the hell else do you need to know?

    • Wellington Phoenix FC
      • Gah. If the stories we're hearing tonight are true, then we are ... underwhelmed. Seriously, Black Star Wellington was the bomb. And even Wellington City or Wellington FC were better options. But ... "Phoenix"? Ah well.

    • Rusticity
      • Following the success of the recent Wellington Flickr Group's exhibition at the Paramount, cames yet more photographic goodness from a Wellington flickr-ite legend A Different Perspective (aka Jim Henderson). He's putting on an exhibition of his work down at Island Bay's The Bach cafe, from the 1st to the 30th of April. To get a feel for what you might be seeing, check out his awesome flickr photostream here.

    • Building rumours 11: Serepisos Towers?
      • The sports pages of the Dominion Post are not the most obvious source of urban development rumours, but there was an interesting titbit tucked away in Saturday's profile of Terry Serepisos, property tycoon, man-about-town and brand new owner of the Wellington Bees/Southerlies/Fever/Whatever. Among the usual breathless enumeration of the clothes, the cars and the parties, there was a reference to his desire to leave a legacy in Wellington, beyond his recent excursions into sports sponsorship. He wants to build Wellington's tallest building.

    • Flight of the Conchords: Business Time
      • Wellington's fourth most popular digi-folk paradists are currently shooting their 12-part HBO comedy series in New York, with fellow Wellingtonians Taika Waititi directing a couple of shows, and Duncan Sarkies providing the script for one of the episodes. All this, of course, is just an excuse to post some classic Flight of the Conchords for your listening enjoyment. Oooohhh yeahhhh, it's business time...

    • Getting Moore for less
      • Fashionistas may be excited to know about the very temporary-looking Andrea Moore 'workroom' set up by the bus stop on Manners St, whose windows are promising 50-70% off. But those who recently bought a (gorgeous) Andrea Moore dress at full cost might not want to read this at all...

    • White Lightening
      • Ben White (pictured) was on fire today as he scored four goals to lead the way for a Zephyr Rovers victory over Solnet. This was a potentially tricky fixture with only four regular squad members available for the local derby against Solnet.

    • Bypassed
      • Well, it's done. The changeover to the southbound leg of the bypass happened without incident at just after 6 this morning, and while it's hard to tell for sure, there don't seem to be any major snarl-ups around town. Tomorrow will be a bigger test, once commuters hit the new layout in force, but we'll still have to wait for a while before we can see whether it achieves what it set out to do.

    • Road Rage Hits Wellington
      • Over the last few weeks, significant road rage has hit Wellington regions roading system. This rage has been vented by commuters and out-of-towners, and now a new website www.roadragenz.com has been set up to allow commuters and others to vent their rage publicly.

    • Coffee in chains
      • The good news is that, after a slow summer, there are a lot of new cafes, restaurants and bars about to open. I can think of a dozen that are definitely on the way, with another half dozen or so intriguing rumours. The bad news is that most of the cafes that have opened recently, or are about to open soon, are chain stores.

    • Wellington MTBO Series - {Makara} Peak
      • Brilliant weather in other parts of Wellington today was replaced by mist on the top of {Makara} Peak, and a bit of a breeze buffeted riders on exposed tracks such as Ridgeline. However it was great in the bush and afterwards on the grass as the scores were totted up. Stephen Betts judged things nicely with slightly too many controls for MP Supporters president John Randal to visit - he scored 470 out of a possible 540.

    • Not Happy With Shed 6
      • Zephyr FC Manager Steve Hall said today that he was not happy with the increasing number of fixtures Rovers had scheduled for Shed 6. "It's no secret our that Rovers prefer the Shed of Dreams (pictured) as out preferred venue, probably something to do with that 10 - 0 drubbing we got in Shed 6 only six weeks ago" said Hall.

    • Support YOUR Sanctuary
      • On Wednesday 4 April, Karori Wildlife Sanctuary will hold its second annual street collection as part of its Annual Appeal. Over 100 volunteers will take to the streets around Wellington CBD, Karori, Thorndon, Johnsonville and the Airport. The money they raise will be put towards vital ecological restoration work at the award-winning Sanctuary, which costs over $2 million a year to run.

    • Back on track: not so new
      • Most of you will have noticed the front-page headline in yesterday's Dominion Post: $200m to ease Wellington rail misery. The more observant among you may have noticed that the improvements mentioned in the sidebar (not online) don't quite add up to $200m, but a slightly less impressive $135m. The even more observant (and presumably long-suffering) among you might also have noticed that many of the upgrades sounded very familiar. Is this really news?

    • What's in a name #1
      • So, perhaps the most drawn out sports decision ever to be made by an Australasian sporting body has finally been confirmed, and a Wellington bid has won the right field a team in Australia's A-League soccer competition. Now all they need is a name (oh, and some players, and a home ground, but let's not mention that).

    • Bypassing Ghuznee
      • The moment of truth is nearly here: in less than a week's time, the bypass will be complete. Well, sort of. When the southbound route opens at 6am this Sunday, SH1 traffic will finally have been diverted out of the city streets and onto ... some other city streets.

    • It's A-League For Wellington
      • Terry Serepisos (pictured) became a living legend in Wellington this afternoon when he bank-rolled the successful Wellington A-League bid for what was reputedly over a million dollars. "I've never met Terry as far as I know" said Zephyr Rovers Manager Steve Hall "but he's welcome to ring me tomorrow to see what we can do about reactivating that Zephyr bid for Wayne Rooney".

    • Oh My God - It's Division 3
      • Wellington Indoor Sports today announced that Zephyr Rovers were to go into Division 3 after John Cao (pictured) apparently had a word with the centre Manager. "It has always been our vision to be the best team in Wellington by 30 June 2030" said Rover Manager Steve Hall "but this is going a bit faster than I anticipated, we're already over half way there with twenty three years or so to spare".

    • Borders': opening Thursday
      • As Tom noted back in October, the northern portion of Capital on the Quay is to become a Borders'. Imagine a bookstore with a giant footprint, a café inside, and possibly the largest range of stock in town. That might well be what we're getting.

    • We ask: why are you here?
      • The Wellingtonista would like to know why so many goddamn black-legged jellyfish decided to hang out at Lyall Bay over the weekend. Sure, it was hot, and swimming was a great idea, but for me, not for you creepy wobbly things!

    • Online to On the Wall
      • We all know that Wellington is a great place to take photos: its natural beauty, public art, lively street life and eclectic architecture all contribute to a visually stimulating city. The busy Flickr-ers of the Wellington Flickr group know this, and they've decided to take their best photos into the real world. "Online to On the Wall" opens at the Paramount Theatre tomorrow night at 6pm, and runs until the 28th of March.

    • What's popular this month?
      • An Australian culinary journey, nonviolence, six women in Revolutionary France, convincing children to eat weird foreign flavours and climate change are the subjects of some of our most reserved books this month. Ian McEwan's new novel is on order and there are popular CDs from Bloc Party and Fray. Visit our booklists page for more info.
