2022 Div II – What a blast!
- Tawa Swimming Club
- The team set off for Dunedin to compete in the Div II competition on Saturday 7 May for five days of racing. The team consisted of 12 swimmers and 4 parents, with another 2 swimmers and 2 parents joining the team later in the week. We’d lost one team member due to testing positive for Covid a couple of days earlier, but this was the largest team the club has taken to Div II in recent memory. On arrival, we explored Larnach Castle and the iconic Baldwin street (the worlds steepest street). We spent hours at the castle and the kids were fascinated by how people lived back then. We escaped Baldwin street without any injuries, the main aim of coach Nadia!

A feeling of home at Pablos Art Studios
- Pablos Art Studios
- Creating a community and a home for artists is what makes Pablos Art Studios a vital part of Wellington, says its manager, Anastasija Bubanja. It’s all about supporting and empowering everyone who comes into the space. Last year, Pablos Art Studios moved from its home in Tory Street to Vivian Street. Looking for a new space that artists could call home was challenging because of a shortage of affordable, commercial spaces in the inner city and earthquake safety regulations.

A New Farm for Ohariu
- Eye of the Fish
- It has been confirmed that Meridian Energy plans to build a new wind farm in the Ohariu Valley, with 31 turbines across 4000 hectares. The proposed site is owned by 5 farmers, who banded together in 2002 to negotiate proposals with various energy companies. Talks had stalled over price issues in 2003, but recently an agreement has been reached. Having met with the community last night, it is unclear whether the project will face significant opposition from the local residents.

Mount Street Cemetery
- The Mount Street Cemetery was the first cemetery in Wellington for Catholic burials and contains the graves of the first nuns and priests in Wellington. It remained open until 1891 although burials continued in existing family plots until 1954. The earliest surviving grave marker dates from 1851, and the latest from 1954. Although only around 200 headstones survive, it is estimated that there could have been as many as 750 to 800 burials. Many of the early markers were simple wooden crosses, which have long since vanished.
