Ssendam Rawkustra
- Newtown Festival
- A multi-headed rhythm beast arising in 2007 out of the murky depths of the South Wellington mental health scene, 12 years, seven practice rooms, 1 album, and countless performances later (including 10 or more outings at the Newtown Fair), the Ssendam Rawkustra are still going strong and are as raw, cuz, as ever! The Rawkustra aim to mesmorise listeners with their musical oxymoron of organised percussionistic chaos, drawing on a plethora of influences from Maurice Ravel to the Doors, under the inspired direction of maestro Andreas Lepper, with spiritual oversight from the Assistant Vicar of Newtown, Reverend Richard Noble.

Merch, baby - MERCH!!!
- Slow Boat Records
- Well, lordy, lordy me - what have we here, then?! After running an (entirely unscientific) Insta poll, we here at Slow Boat have listened to the voice of the people, and have bowed to popular consensus, and had manufactured a limited quantity of marvellous looking Slow Boat hoodies, alongside the regular tee shirts, a new style of (very robust!) tote bags (shall we refer to them as Boat Totes? Yes, I think we shall!) and, for the first time ever - two (count 'em!) varieties of SB trucker caps!! These are available for purchase instore now (my advice - get in quick while we still have a good range of sizes and colours!) so you can be fashion forward, and the envy of your pals. Tees are now $39.50, caps $30, totes $25 and the deluxe hoodies are a still perfectly reasonable $75 - I mean, what price happiness? What price... fashion... Feel free to drop us a line or call (04 385 1330) if you'd like to secure yours, and we'll be seein' ya soon - will have some Record Store Day 2025 related news to share in the upcoming weeks... Peace and love, THE SLOW BOAT CREW XX

Wishing for a better world
- The Wellingtonista
- Wishbone have put up the prices of most of its food by $1, so now you will pay $7.50 for their cranberry, chicken and brie sandwich (luckily, next door to my local Wishbone is the Concorde Cafe where I can get a crusty baguette filled with salami and cheese, and a mystical half olive for a bargain $3.50). They say that it is the rising cost of petrol that has forced them into it. We say that maybe if they investigated ways to reduce the ridiculous amount of plastic that their food comes in, the cost of petrol wouldn't affect them quite as much.

Congratulations to the Regional Council: a Basin solution without a flyover
- Wellington Scoop
- Congratulations to the Regional Council on the vote last week to revisit Option X. The Architectural Centre’s design beats the Transport Agency’s by integrating needs – it’s more sophisticated than just another stretch of State Highway 1. In 2009, the Civic Trust ran a public seminar about the Basin Reserve area to a packed house. Clearly it showed a successful solution would need to balance the interests of residents, motorists, passengers, pedestrians, and children. This has shaped our flyover response: the flyover doesn’t achieve grade separation from local traffic, and it doesn’t fit its surroundings (SH2 Dowse shows NZTA’s style). There are better ways of improving transport.

Sweet win for UHCF 11th grade team at Easter Tourney
- Upper Hutt Football
- Congratulations to the UHCF 11th Grade Storm on a FANTASTIC effort at the KCU Easter tournament. To go through the day unbeaten, score 11 goals and concede only 1 is a brilliant achievement for any team, but to beat Onslow the way they did in that final was outstanding. In the 5 to 6 years I’ve been coaching it was probably one of the gutsiest performances I have seen from a group of kids – they didn’t give an inch, but played hard and fair! Well deserved boys on taking the trophies away this year!!! Important to remember too, these are the twelve best 11th Grade teams in the Wellington District!

Food Day Appeal - DCM Bulletin 17 Nov
- Downtown Community Ministry
- The cost of food has gone up 8.4% in the last three years[1] ̶ a bigger rise than the general Consumers Price Index. The high cost of food is reflected in the figures for child poverty that are being widely discussed as part of the election campaigns[2]. “How do people manage?” asks Stephanie McIntyre, Director of Downtown Community Ministry. “We know that it’s a real struggle for some because of those who come to the DCM foodbank – and it’s the same for other foodbanks in Wellington.” “That’s why we’re asking DCM supporters and all Wellingtonians to contribute to the Food Appeal this coming Saturday, 19 November, organised by Wellington Foodbank Coalition members to replenish their stocks of food.”

One, Two, Buckle Your Shoes—Getting Around Gets Tougher
- Salient
- The Government released its draft policy statement on transport last week and the news is bleak for anyone who wants to go anywhere other than their flat and the dairy down the road. Funding for public transport, walking, and cycling has been significantly slashed by the latest policy, down $1 billion from the initial allocation set by the prior Labour government. In addition, while money has been allocated for some roading projects, the draft policy statement has said that none of the funding for local roads is to be used on “multi-modal improvements” like bus or cycle lanes, and that “there will be reduced funding for traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps.”
