      • Important Dates Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori: September 14th – 20th Monday 21st – Friday 25th September: Mental Health Awareness Week Course choices for 2021 for current Years 9—12 to be entered in the portal: Sunday 20th September  Friday 25th September: End of Term 3 Important Information Year 9 Choices for Year 10 in 2021 The Year 10 Course Choice Booklet for 2021 is now available on our website: http://www.whs.school.nz/course-choice-booklet/ Your student is invited to explore the options available. They will receive a copy of the planning sheet in rōpū and the planning sheet is also included as the last page in the booklet online. Choices can be made online in the Student Portal from Monday 14th September. It would be appreciated if students can have their options entered by Sunday 20th September (note: this is earlier than reported in the email home). Senior Course Choices for 2021 The second part of senior course choice selection for 2021 is now underway. Students now need to re-confirm their subjects on the portal by Friday 18th September.  Please note there have been considerable movements with the lines to eliminate as many clashes as possible. It is unlikely there will be significant changes to the lines from now, so students are strongly advised to choose non-clashing subjects if possible. However, students who still have a problematic clash should indicate this on the updated lines sheet (which will be given out at rōpū) and give this to their rōpū teacher. Concerning online content  Netsafe has received several reports about a concerning video that was shared on social media. It has now been removed from Facebook. The video has been shared on other social media sites, such as Tik Tok and Instagram, and the platforms are actively removing this video.  Regardless of whether students have seen the video or heard about it second-hand, young people may experience emotional distress given the nature of this content. As a school, our best advice is to make sure that your students are supported and have avenues to talk about how this content may be affecting them.  If students do come across copies of the video being shared, we’d strongly encourage them to report it to the social media site or website that it’s on, and to report it to Netsafe. Netsafe has several helpful resources: Helping students exposed to upsetting content Online Safety Parent Toolkit is a wider framework for helping parents navigate online safety with their young people. If students would like further support they can contact Youthline on free text 234 or call 0800 376 633 Achievements Debating Finalists! A huge congratulations to our Junior Prem and Prem B teams who have made it through to their regional finals for debating! The Junior Prem team of Sky Gobbi, Liv Calder, Tom Bonert, and Fergus Martin-Edgar, won their semi-final debate last Tuesday against Samuel Marsden. The Senior Prem B team of Julia Randerson,  Alex Buyck, Corwin Heath-Cameron, and Rata Petherick won their semi-final debate this week against Scots. It is a very impressive result for Wellington High School debate teams to make it into two finals! We are very proud of both teams and wish them all the best for their finals.  Also — a special congratulations to Julia Randerson who qualified for Wellington Black (one of the two Wellington regional teams) a couple of months ago. Her team made it to the national semi-finals for debating after winning four of their preliminary debates! Katherine Mansfield Short Story success! Congratulations to Nadezhda Macey for winning the Katherine Mansfield Short Story Award 2020 with her story ‘Matahiwi’, and to Cadence Chung for her Highly Commended story ‘The End of the World’. Wellington High School was the only school to have two students short-listed — a great achievement. Nadezhda received a $500 cash prize and the eleven short-listed students were presented with certificates by guest judge Tina Makereti at the annual award ceremony at the National Library on Tuesday night. Mural workshop with Sheyne Tuffery This week a group of art students joined Sheyne in developing a design for a mural for the level 2 linkwell. This is a WCC funded project that Sheyne has been working on for some months. Sheyne’s mural work can be seen on Wallace Street and Hopper Street. We look forward to seeing the final results — BSJ WHS Tramping Club heads to Atiwhakatu Hut Last weekend, 18 students tramped to Atiwhakatu hut. We walked from Holdsworth station car park along the river to Atiwhakatu hut and back. Students cooked their own meals and lit the fire for a cosy night. A little rain failed to dampen our spirits; there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear! — AEJ/PAB From the Greenhouse! From the school garden greenhouse this week orchids for WHS reception. Grown with care by the senior horticulture students. He Kākano news Our He Kākano students have enjoyed an outdoor education week. We visited the learning centre at the Botanical Gardens to learn about how produce grows from a seed to a fruit and vegetable. There were opportunities to pick our own carrots too! A visit to Toi Art at Te Papa had us in a colour room with some interesting group photos. Sports Underwater Hockey Congratulations go to Carlos Relph and Henry Murdoch from our Senior Open team for their selection to the U18 Central Zone B team, and to Milly Woodbury from our Senior Girls team for her selection to the U18 Central Zone A team. We wish them good luck at nationals. Well done to them, and something to aim for in future years for our junior players Junior Girls’ Football Our Junior Girls’ Football played their last game this week, this is the first team we have had in this grade for a number of years and we are looking forward to having a team in this grade for years to come. Huge thanks to Bea Gladding and Jennifer Argyle for really driving this team and making it fun for all the girls. Winter Tournament Our Girls’ Football 1st XI finished their Round robin the Regional Premier 2 competition in 3rd place with Semi Finals, and possibly Finals, to come. At the Winter Tournament, the girls place 12th which is their best finish to date. A special thanks to Isobel Smith, Heidi Coleman, Ella Blakely, Gala Baumfield, Emma Allen, Kayla Landers and Isla McInnes who all competed in their final tournament for the school. Also, thanks to Will Dewhirst who has done a great job coaching. Our Boys’ Football 1st XI finished their last game of the Round Robin D1 competition, finishing unbeaten after 7 games. So, we have finished 1st with 17 points (5 wins and 2 draw). We are heading now into Semi Finals on Saturday 12 September. Our Boys’ Hockey 1st XI are currently in 2nd place in the P3 division and are hoping to compete at the final in week 10. The boys competed hard at Winter Tournament week and finished it off with a win over Newlands. Big thank you to Will Pinckney, Jess Johnson and Kether Gati for looking after the team. Netball: Last year our Senior A netball team won their grade and this year they have done it again! Well done, too, to our Senior B team who won their grade too. Great things are coming from these young strong wāhine…and our Year 13s finishing on a high. Open Evening and 2021 enrolment We welcomed over 400 families and whānau to our open evening last Monday on what was possibly the coldest night of the year. Our team of student and staff guides took tours around the campus, students were actively involved in promoting different areas of school life, and everywhere was alive and buzzing with activity. Enrolments are now open for 2021. Our enrolment process starts online at: https://portal.whs.school.nz/index.php/enrolment. If you have any questions, please email Jude Aspinall, our enrolment officer on jude.aspinall@whs.school.nz        Music Evening Our Music Evening on Wednesday 1 July gave students the opportunity to showcase their talents. With a range of big band, groups and solo items, pieces in a range of styles and genres, it was a fabulous evening compered, as always by music teacher Fritz Wollner. Instrumental and vocal lessons update If your Junior student is interested in taking instrumental / vocal lessons but has not yet enrolled, please download the form from the Student Hub and hand in or email the completed form to Fritz Wollner Lessons will be reorganised for Terms 3 and 4. If students have not been attending regularly, they need to see Mr Wollner as soon as possible to ensure they do not lose their spot. Tamatha Paul – lunchtime lecture The Feminist Club was delighted to welcome Wellington Councillor Tamatha Paul to deliver this Thursday’s lunchtime lecture. Tamatha (Ngāti Awa / Waikato Tainui) was first elected to Council in 2019 and is one of three Pukehīnau / Lambton Ward counsellors for 2019-2022. As an independent candidate, Tamatha campaigned on issues including zero waste, connecting communities and the importance of prioritising future facing leadership. As can be seen from these pictures, Tamatha’s visit attracted a large audience, keen to welcome and listen to her.         Year 10 Computing – Photoshop and political discourse Students in Gus Donaldson’s Year 10 computing course have been developing skills in Photoshop through working on a project on the theme of political discourse. Their work is currently on display in the foyer outside the library. The posters, with the narrative from their creators alongside them, are powerful pieces of work that clearly exemplify the students’ views and response to current issues in the world around them. The display will remain in place at the start of Term 3 and you are invited to come and view it.              WHS Ink – Junior Art club zine 30 Year 9 and 10 students have been working on their own artwork during each week’s WHS Ink sessions. Coordinated by Teacher Aide, Connor Morrison-Mills, this group of talented students’ work is now included in their very own zine. Click on the image below to see more. Outdoor Education’s snowy tramp It has been cold enough for many this week, with the storms and freezing winds around Wellington. The Outdoor Education students showed their mettle by heading out on a tramp in the Tararua range earlier this week. They made it as far as the Powell Hut before the weather conditions made it too risky to continue and they turned back.              Achievements He Kākano – AWD Tenpin Bowling On Thursday 2 July, He Kākano students competed in the annual AWD Tenpin Bowling competition against students from other Wellington colleges. All students and staff had a fantastic time and there were some really strong bowlers in the group. The top three WHS students were Talib Prime, Darius Ngature and Joshua Nathan.              Roxy5 finalists ‘En Passant Films’ and ‘Look Away’ are both WHS finalists in the Roxy5 film competition this year. Screenings will take place on Friday 31 July at the Mclaurin Theatre, Victoria University. The winner will be announced at the Red Carpet awards evening at the Roxy Cinema on Wednesday 5 August. We are waiting eagerly to to see whether The Work of An Artist (En Passant Films) or Hey Cassie (Look Away) will scoop a place. Sports Boys 1st XI Football On 27 June, our boys 1st XI football team beat Newlands College 4-0, taking them to the top of their pool. This Saturday the team will play St Patrick’s second team. If the team win or draw they will go into play-offs on 18 July against either Onslow College or Wellington College for a place in the Youth Premier Reserve. Good luck team!

If you have not received papers yet, then from Wednesday 17 June you will be able to collect a ballot paper from Reception. ‘Keep it real online’ campaign The Department of Internal Affairs with Netsafe and the Office of Film and Literature Classification has launched a ‘Keep it real online’ campaign. The campaign will support parents and caregivers to reduce the risks of online harm such as cyber-bullying, inappropriate content, pornography and grooming.   Parents and caregivers can find information including tips on how to have conversations with their kids at www.keepitrealonline.govt.nz. What’s happening? The prefabs are here! In a much anticipated event, four prefab classrooms were lowered in to place on the school field last weekend. These four classrooms will provide more space on campus and will be important as the school moves through the master planning process. There is still some work to do onsite and we anticipate that they will be in use from the first day of Term 3. Outdoor Education This week Year 11 students have been out on the water to Makaro (Ward Island). Students participated in a beach clean up and spent time looking at the habitats of Little Blue Penguins. The fact that students were able to observe seals and penguins on the rocks and in the water was a real bonus.   Art      This week we share stunning landscapes painted by Ms Peters’ Year 10 Art class.      Year 13 took advantage of the winter sun and fine colours to work outdoors. Āwhina Āwhina is our Thursday homework club which takes place in the Library every week. This popular, supportive environment is one where students can come for support with assignments and homework, thanks to the dedicated teachers who regularly give up their time after school each week. MyKindo As recently reported, the cafeteria has adopted the mykindo app to facilitate easy pre-order and contactless payment for food. To support those using the mykindo app, the attached guide provides information on the different methods you can use to top up your account.   Achievements  NZ Online Mathematical Olympiad Well done to Ruby Nicolson and Lias Morris who achieved marks which placed them in the top 10 in the NZ Online Mathematical Olympiad. Ruby and Lias are both in year 9. From the careers desk Virtual Careers Expo — 18-19 June Even in unusual times like these, our students still have important decisions to make about their futures. Next week, a number of NZ’s top providers come together to give you a Careers’ Expo experience, virtually! Attendees will have full access to the Virtual Expo Hall, where you can interact with exhibitors, ask questions, and access useful resources that will help you choose the right path. Students only need to register once to be able to access the expo across the 2 days (and with you during the evening on Thursday night). They can access the expo at any time. There will be representatives from each institution during expo hours to chat to attendees. Outside of these hours they can still log in an access information.       • Important Dates NOTE: You can access the school calendar on our website: WHS School Calendar 26 March: FRIDAY timetable runs today 29 March: Learning Conversations all day (with rōpū teachers) 1 April: BoT NZSTA event: Becoming a Trustee (see below) 12 April: End of Term 1 Principal’s message: Support, unity and strength of action It was lovely to see a number of current and past students and teachers at the Basin Reserve last Sunday evening for a chance to grieve and to show strength and unity with our muslim communities. SLT met with WERO leaders on Monday who had a range of ideas for support and these have been actioned this week: the school made available a reflection room with senior staff for students who needed time out and someone to talk to in order to help process the event, a book of condolences is available at reception in which members of our community can write, draw and express their messages for those affected in Christchurch the school came together on the field yesterday at lunch for a unity picnic – it was great to see so many of our students there, particularly senior students – and students took part in impromptu sing-a-longs, football matches, frisbee throwing and hula hooping, to name a few activities, today the school has observed the ‘colour your day’ promotion and have observed the call to prayer at 1.30pm followed by the 2 minute silence at 1.32pm, students have created a chalk wall where anyone can leave a message for our muslim whānau, and, students have been busy creating art works inspired by and in answer to the events. The students through all of this have been wonderful and caring and I hope we can all emerge from this feeling more kinship towards each other. The events last Friday overshadowed what was a wonderful response from our young people in civic square and at parliament in relation to climate change. A large number of our students took part in the climate change march and this was worthy of national focus. We made it very clear at Wellington High School that we supported our students with this action and I was really disappointed to see some principals and teachers in other areas devaluing the students’ initiative. We should all take strength from their actions last Friday and their continuing action this week in unrelated events. They are our future and their actions over the past week have been inspiring. Dominic Killalea Principal Important Information Learning Conversations — 29 March 2019 The Learning Conversation takes place between your student, the student’s rōpū teacher and parent(s) / caregiver(s).  Each learning conversation will take 20 minutes at the most. Students will only be at school on Friday 29 March for their learning conversation. Emails have been sent home. Bookings for learning conversations can be made at https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/ using code xktku. Lift Access: Please note that we have no lift access at the moment and are awaiting a new lift. If you would usually require the lift, please email Alison Jeffery (alison.jeffery@whs.school.nz) to request an accessible room. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Emergency preparation We acknowledge that this has been a difficult week for everyone. We are keen to make sure you are fully informed of how our school would respond in an emergency. We are upgrading our alarm system at present but will conduct a practice lockdown and evacuation soon. We will inform you and the students in advance when we plan to do this. Meanwhile, you can read about our processes here: Emergency preparation.     Viewing disturbing content online This week, we issued a reminder to students that they should not be viewing or sharing disturbing content related to the Christchurch events online. We amended the use of computers in the library in relation to the kinds of games being played and we reviewed our whole school filtering options. We will continue to take this very seriously. Netsafe has issued the following advice: “The footage of the Christchurch attacks is disturbing and will be harmful for people to see. If you or someone you know has viewed the video and are struggling with what you have seen please contact ‘Need to talk’ – free call or text 1737. While the content is online there is some risk that children or young people may come across it. We encourage all parents to proactively discuss with their children what they should do if they come across distressing content online. In support of Christchurch: Unity Picnic At lunchtime on Thursday, several hundred members of the WHS community congregated on the school field for our Unity Picnic. An inspired, inclusive and community-focused idea from our WERO leaders, the picnic gave us all the opportunity to sit, eat, chat and enjoy each others company. Students took the opportunity to play guitar and sing, or get involved with games of frisbee, or even to focus on school work while they ate.            Memorial Wall Students have taken the opportunity to express their respect and support for those affected by the Christchurch shootings creating a colourful memorial wall. Located by the car park near the Science block, the wall is a striking feature at the entrance to the campus.   Board Elections  | A message from the Wellington High School Board of Trustees 2019 is an election year for school trustees.  We understand that asking people to put their hand up and stand for election is difficult, especially if parents aren’t really clear on what the role entails! Find out about becoming a trustee New Zealand School Trustees Association are offering a new programme, Kōrari, which is designed to recognise the experience of existing trustees and help to encourage potential new trustees to come and find out what it really means to serve on a school board. People who want to understand what school governance looks like can come along and find out more. A hui will be facilitated by a regional adviser from NZSTA who will talk about the reality of being a trustee, the support and training that is available and encourage existing trustees to tell their story. The Hui will be held at Wellington High School on Monday 1st April at 6pm. NZSTA will provide refreshments. If you are interested in becoming a school trustee we encourage you to come along. Meet Ron Year 10 2018’s second semester sculpture will be taking up residence on the WHS campus very soon.   New Zealand Young Scientists’ Tournament Last week, teams from schools in Auckland, New Plymouth, Lower Hutt and Wellington met to compete in the first New Zealand Young Scientists’  Tournament (NZYST). Over two days, the 9 teams took part in Science Fights, presenting, opposing and reporting on research completed since September.  WHS fielded two teams: the Immovable Concrete Pillars and the Generous Practitioners who are to be congratulated for finishing 3rd and 4th respectively. Competitors may now be selected to take part in the International Young Naturalists’ Tournament in Minsk, Belarus later in 2019.                 Sport Futsal New Zealand Secondary School FUTSAL Champs will be held on Wednesday 27, Thursday 28 and Friday 29 March at the ASB Sport Center in Kilbirnie Wellington High School will be represented at the NZSS FUTSAL champs by a Junior Boys and a Senior Boys teams. A huge thank you to their coach Matua Whakamarurangi for all his time and expertise.       Lawn Bowls On Tuesday 19 March College Sport Wellington held the Lawn Bowls Championships out at Silverstream.  Theo Sutorius competed at the event for Wellington High School. Theo has played Lawn Bowls for the school for the last four years and has enjoyed every aspect of the sport.  Well done Theo!       Achievements WHS Alumnus wins Gold at Special Olympics Dominic Faherty, one of our alumni, won a GOLD MEDAL in the 200m event, and achieved a personal best, at the Special Olympics in Dubai. Dom is pictured on the podium. Congratulations! Frankie Coup — From Javelin novice to national competitor in 3 weeks! Frankie Coup threw her first javelin at the WHS Athletics day on 1st March 2019. She managed an impressive second in the junior girls’ category. After the competition she threw a few more times, one of which was 4m further than the current Junior Girls WHS record! Unfortunately, as it was out of competition, it wasn’t able to be officially recorded. Frankie was chosen to represent Wellington High at the Western Zone Athletics meet on 6 March 2019. Here she managed to win the Junior Girls’ competition, and earn a spot at the Regional Athletics meet. At the Regionals on 14 March, she won again, making her the best javelineer in Wellington. She has now been selected to represent Wellington at the National Athletics meet in Tauranga on 6 April 2019, a stunning feat for someone who threw their first javelin fewer than three weeks ago!
