      • Gateway – Congratulations to Cyrus Crook for his new job with Alliance Fire & Security Cyrus Crook has successfully gained employment with Alliance Fire & Security after completing a Gateway placement with the business in 2020. Cyrus has been employed by the the company with a view to starting an apprenticeship in 2021. He is very pleased to get a start in the industry having thoroughly enjoyed his placement with the firm where he was given plenty of hands on experience and got to know many of the people on the job. Shanan Marsden and the crew at Alliance Fire & Security have been long time supporters of our Gateway program and we genuinely appreciate their help. We wish Cyrus all the best for his new career and are confident that he will do very well.       • Gateway – Congratulations to Chris McLaughlin now @ Argus Fire Protection Congratulations to Chris McLaughlin who has signed on with Argus Fire Protection having completed a Gateway placement with the business. Chris was already very familiar with the industry having learned much about it from his father Neil, a very experienced and expert technician, and was very keen to pursue a career with Argus. He enjoyed his placement and appreciated the opportunity to show the management that he is serious about the industry and ready to get to work.     • Gateway – Congratulations Jono Little @ Harbour City Plumbing and Brown Arm Boys Drainage
      • Gateway – Congratulations Jono Little @ Harbour City Plumbing and Brown Arm Boys Drainage Congratulations to Jono Little who has signed on with Lower Hutt based Harbour City Plumbing Master Plumbers and Brown Arm Boys Drainage Master Plumbers with a plan to start a plumbing and drainage apprenticeship in 2021. Jono completed Gateway placements with the businesses in 2019 and 2020 and quickly proved himself to be a very capable and hardworking young man who enjoyed the camaraderie and outdoors work. Jono is a keen sportsman, excelling at Rugby and Softball, so was up for the challenge and happy to do whatever needed doing as a strong team player. Brad McCartan and the crew at Harbour City Plumbing Master Plumbers and Brown Arm Boys Drainage have been long time supporters of our Gateway program and we are very thankful for their support. Brad is also a great promoter of the Gateway program generally and has given us connections in other trades after showing them the benefits of the program. Gateway is not only a great way for students to see if they are genuinely interested in a trade, it’s an opportunity for business to see if a student would make a good employee and, one way or another, encourage new people into their industry. Well done Jono and all the best with your career and future sporting endeavours.       • Gateway Student Profile – Vii Kasiano @ Heretaunga School of Hospitality Vii was very fortunate to be able to complete a Gateway placement at the Heretaunga School of Hospitality situated within Heretaunga College. The School of Hospitality has a cafe with a commercial kitchen and sells high quality cafe food to teachers and students at Heretaunga College which gives these budding chef’s a great well rounded experience. Vii particularly enjoyed baking and made many cheese scones and other tasty baked goods, plus a variety of filled rolls and other dishes. Thank you to the Tutors Will and Deidre for accepting Vii into their classes for one day per week, and to the students who welcomed him into the group and made his placement very enjoyable.       • Gateway student profile – Izaak May-Cashen @ Total Auto Services Ltd Izaak completed a very productive Gateway placement with Phil and the team at  Total Auto Services Ltd in Wainuiomata, Lower Hutt. Izaak showed considerable initiative when he went door knocking at prospective local businesses to ask about Gateway experience and possible work opportunities and Phil was happy to help. Izaak worked on several cars and enjoyed working with Phil and the team who made him feel welcome and shared their considerable experience and knowledge. He plans to study automotive at WelTec in 2021, having already completed the WelTec Trades Academy course in 2020.       • Gateway student profile – James O’Sullivan @ Shine Cafe James has gained valuable hospitality experience and grown in confidence working with Sue and the team at the Shine Cafe in Lower Hutt. Sue has been wonderful in her support for our Gateway program and has helped James to learn the practical and customer service aspects of the hospitality industry in this very popular Lower Hutt cafe. James has thoroughly enjoyed his time at the Shine Cafe and has learned many new skills as well as a much better understanding of working life. He also recently attended a Barista course which complemented his Gateway placement very well.       • Gateway student profile – Ryan McDermott @ John Hoffman Builder Limited Ryan McDermott did an excellent job on his Gateway placement with John Hoffman during 2020. Ryan has been fortunate to work on several residential projects with John who has been impressed with Ryan’s enthusiasm, work ethic and willingness to learn as well as being well organized with a very good working relationship. Ryan will very likely do Gateway with John again in 2021 and is very keen to pursue a building apprenticeship in the future. John has been a long time supporter of the SBC Gateway program and we are very grateful for his continued support.       • Gateway student profile – Braden Ruscoe @ Metal Art Limited Braden has a keen interest in engineering, fabrication and welding and  very much enjoyed his Gateway placement with Metal Art Limited in Seaview, Lower Hutt. Carl Longstaff at Metal Art Limited has been a long time supporter of the SBC Gateway Program and we really appreciate his help. Braden has had the opportunity to not only gain a lot of practical experience on the job, but also to benefit from discussions with Carl about various career and training options for school leavers in the industry. Braden will likely do a course at WelTec or undertake an apprenticeship if he can secure one for 2021. During 2020 Justin has been doing an Independent Learning Program (ILP) to complete the theory component required to gain his Private Pilots License (PPL). By the end of 2019 Justin had already completed quite a few hours of practical flight lessons and had proven that he had the necessary discipline, academic ability and work ethic, as well as showing a genuine passion for an aviation career, so we were happy to support his ILP for 2020. His Gateway placement with Kapiti Aero Club was a natural fit and he worked in the office as well as in the workshop cleaning and preparing aircraft and took part in several specialist training flights. He worked closely with his flight instructor, Scott McPake, and we are very thankful to Scott for helping to facilitate the placement. Justin has completed all the theory exams for his ILP and will complete the remaining flight time required to get his PPL before he starts his commercial flight training at the Air Hawkes Bay flight academy in 2021. Justin won the Gateway Trophy for Top Gateway Student, as well as an award for General Excellence across the Curriculum, at the SBC Senior Academic Awards for 2020. He was made to feel very welcome by Nathan, Jennifer and the team and appreciated the chance to showcase his work on a several projects. On the way, they managed a visit to the Weta Guitar Studio where they had a jam on too many electric guitars, a Samoan ukulele and a Russian balalaika.
